Rajon Rondo as a Coach

Post#1 » by MrFrank » Fri May 24, 2024 1:06 pm

I think he will be a great coach one day. I don't think Joe will be fired any time soon, even if he doesn't win the championship, but Rondo could still accept a position as an assistant.

The vision he had of the game as a player, his ability to analyze, will make him a great coach in the future.

What do you think?

He will never coach the Celtics while Stevens is running the show, for reasons that have been discussed here on several occasions.

He'd be a world-class Connect 4 coach.

On the Celtics Rondo was hated by his teammates.

On the Mavs he and his coach hated each other.

People skills don't seem to be his forte'.

Loved him as a player but this still bothers me:

Assuming that what his girlfriend said is true, I wouldn't want him (or anybody like that) coaching the team I root for.

I do agree that he'd probably be a great coach.

I think so. He was mercurial as a player, but I think he s a really good Xs and Os guy and can be a leader.

Intelligence is one thing, which I think we all agree he's got in spades in terms of basketball IQ.

Personality and the ability to lead are equal components of being a good coach, he doesn't have those. He's prickly, cynical, stubborn, all of those personality traits which you don't want from a head coach in professional basketball. That said, as an assistant as part of a wider team there's lots of potential for him to add value.

Too many off court issues. Not worth the risk. No thanks.

Think he’d need 5 or more years without any kind of legal issues or controversies. He’s obviously smart basketball-wise and sharp overall, but has always seemed moody which may not be great for younger players. Kidd was obviously no saint, so there’s a chance I’d say.

Even an overwrought accusation of domestic abuse could be evidence somebody lacks some of the temperament for coaching. (Unless it's 100% fabricated, of course, but what are the chances of that?)

Agree with both. Though every once in awhile I run into some old Rondo highlights and man that brings it back to the days when Bill Simmons was cool and playoff Rondo was a thing and I just enjoy the nostalgia for a minute anyways.

When they fire Rivers, Rondo can take over and run Giannis out of town.

Rondo seems to have a really strong vision and understanding of the game, and he also seems to have some parts that rub people wrong. This is just my impression. He could be a really good assistant coach…I don’t know that he would be a good head coach though.

sounds nice and unclear Doc, way to go

I loved Rondo for most of his Boston career, and I am a sentimental fellow, but most of the evidence from the last decade has me certain I don't want Rajon to infuse his championship DNA into our organization
