Expansion Draft

Post#1 » by TheProfessor » Sat Jan 11, 2025 6:05 pm

Hey Celtics fans, Just wanted to know if in an expansion draft what 8 players are you protecting? Remember 1 player must be unprotected from the draft and player/team options can also be protected. Thanks guys. Also what would you be willing to give up to protect one of your players from not being selected.

Our top 8 is pretty clear

Tatum
Brown
KP
White
Jrue
Horford
Pritchard
Hauser

I'm thinking there might be a few fans who would let Al go because of age and protect a guy like Jordan Walsh. But I'd ride with our top 8. (Edit: well actually I suppose it may depend on when an expansion draft would be happening). And hopefully Kornet doesn't get snatched up because he's fun and better than he gets credit for.

The expansion draft thing is weird because all the guys you don't protect would obviously get their feelings hurt even if they end up staying with the team. Seems like the whole thing will cause sour grapes around the league.

Assume it is happening in the offseason 2025. So Horford would not need to be protected as he would be a UFA.

That's what makes it interesting for teams like HOU, Milwakee, Denver. But I think the Celtics are in a fine position.

I would let AL go and protect Queta. There's a good chance that Horford wouldn't be selected because of his age.

Yeah I would protect Queta and not Al. Not worried about Kornet because the expansion team would be too worried about him being a locker room cancer if they stole him from us.

Also I’m not sure ownership would protect KP. Maybe with the hypothetical timeline given they would because he’s only got a year left anyways.

Assuming this is hypothetical draft for this offseason, I think Horford and Kornet are going to be FAs and hence not in the discussion for being protected. That leaves Queta, Springer, Walsh, Tilman and Scheierman for the last spot, and I presume Queta and Walsh are the only ones to seriously consider for protection (vs. the alternatives).

Next offseason would help a lot. Since Luke Kornet and Horford wouldn’t have to be accounted for.

So that would leave a choice between Walsh, Queta and Scheierman for the last guy protected.

KP as mentioned a real dark horse also for $ or if he was hurt again.

Is there an expansion draft pending?
How does it work?, does the impending team have to take on that players salary? I would assume so.
I don’t think there will be one in 2025 or 2026, so kind of a moot point. I’d consider not protecting Holiday at that point though.

Seems like we’re 4 or 5 years (or more) away from an expansion draft.

If there was an expansion draft this offseason, there won’t be but just hypothetically, I think they’d protect

1. Tatum
2. Brown
3. D White
4. Pritchard
5. Hauser
6. Queta
7. Walsh
8. Scheierman

You can’t protect FA, so Al and Luke would be moot. I think they’d leave Jrue and Porzingis unprotected, because of the tax situation. But, I expect we are several years away from expansion draft taking place.

I wonder how it would work, with Two-Ways?
That's never been done in the NBA. Has it been done in other sports?
