Celtics games on NBC Sports Boston are now available direct to consumer. It looks like the price is $14.95 a month, plus $7.99 for a Peacock subscription, so $23 a month.

The only games not available will be national exclusive games. The playoffs after the first round are not on NBC Sports Boston. But this is will work for the rest of the regular season, and I think the first round of the playoffs.

You have to live within the local region (most of New England) to be eligible.

I realize League Pass doesn't help you if you're in the blackout market for Celtics, but $161 for 7 months is pretty high to watch games when you're trying to avoid just getting a cable package to do them. It's 2025... can we just get rid of the blackout restrictions already? At least make it to where they aren't blacked out if they're sold out like Indy 500 and NFL does (I'm sure others do as well).

I don't like supporting the cable model and paying for all those channels we'll never watch; that doesn't sit right. I'm glad there's a new alternative.

Yeah my impression is the whole point of the black out is to force people into buying the cable package, I don't think the blackouts are going anywhere.

What I'm trying today is "NOW" TV, which is $20/mo. Definitely a lot less than Youtube TV, which I dropped 2 months ago when they went up to $82.99, from $72.99. These Broadcasters are ridiculous.

Some upstart company needs to come along and rip all these contracts from them.
Something less than half price, would cause a Big switch.

I subscribed to Peacock yesterday with the NBCSportsBoston add-on. This gives you the entire NBCSportBoston channel, not just the Celtics games. It's put into Peacock's "channel" section, and is on top of their viewing guide within that section. Here's a quick review of the service:


The Good

* It works without glitches.

* It has pause, fast forward, and rewind capability, allowing you to run through commercials during the live feed. Those work very well. This is an essential feature.

* The price is far lower than paying for Youtubetv, which is what we had before.

* You get all the other programming available on Peacock, which I haven't explored but looked better than expected.


The Neutral and Bad

* The picture quality is adequate but didn't seem to pop like YTTV did. It would be nice if it was better, but no big deal.

* There's no DVR or recording capability. This means you watch the games when they're broadcast. You can start the game a little late though, as it has a two hour window to go back and begin your viewing.

* There's no replay feature either. If you don't want to stay up late for the Sacramento game, you can't just watch in the future at your convenience... BUT, there is a live game replay the next morning on the channel, so you can catch it then.


The Price

* YTTV costs $82.99 a month. This add-on costs $14.95 on top of whatever you pay for Peacock. Being a first time subscriber I got three months free for the tier that has ads, so we save $68 for this month.

We'll use it for the rest of the regular season, and into the first round of the playoffs, then switch to Sling Orange for the later rounds.

Final Verdict

Peacock/NBCSportsBoston is fine. It's simple. It does what you want it to. You get all the Celtics games broadcast on that channel. Maybe they'll add some features in the future. Either way it's a good alternative for some people.

For me this is worth it, as the only thing we watched on YTTV was the Celtics. I don't like supporting the cable model, and I'd prefer not to pay for something I'm not using.

I might look at this for next season, I cancelled my YTTV when they went up as well but I didn't replace it with anything. For the first time in almost 25 years I'm not watching the games, just watching highlights because I'm done getting price gouged by cable that I only use to watch basketball and football. A year ago I had premium comcast for cable and internet and att for my phone and between the two was shelling out around $400 a month (probably more, I don't like to think about it). We switched to fidium for internet and YTTV and then dropped the YTTV, switched out ATT for mint mobile and picked up a couple cheap streaming packages and it's costing us around $300 less a month.

That's exactly what I did.

Actually, I first went with NOW Streaming TV ($20), and added Peacock to that (Free add-on). But, was unable to add the NBC Sports Boston, to that version of Peacock. Go figure. (Don't go this route.)

So, I went back and got rid of NOW Streaming TV. Then I went and got the Stand-alone Peacock version ($7.99).
From there I was able to add NBC Sports Boston, as a Peacock Add-on ($14.95).

I dropped Youtube TV last month, when it went up to $82.99.
So, instead of pay that ridiculous $83. I'm now paying $23 ($7.99 + $14.95).

Just by luck, the NBC Sports Boston add-on just became available on Peacock, this past Tuesday (March 18).

I plan on doing the same thing next fall as I have YouTube TV too. I am keeping it until after the EFC only because TNT has the EFC this year. With that said how are people that dropped YTTV going to watch the EFC, let me know I’ll drop YTTV tonight if there is another way to watch the EFC.
