Who will fill the 15th spot? - Update, Celtics Convert Davison to Full NBA (April 12, 2025)

Maine Celtics’ playoff elimination poses questions about JD Davison, Drew Peterson’s futures

What’s next for JD Davison and the Maine Celtics?

The Celtics’ three two-ways — Davison, Norris, and Peterson — will rejoin the Boston Celtics for the postseason run, as will Maine Celtics assistant coach Tyler Lashbrook, who was an assistant coach on the Celtics’ championship team last year. The two-ways will be eligible to play in the Celtics’ final four regular season games — against the Knicks, Magic, and Hornets (twice), but given their two-way status, they won’t be eligible to suit up in the playoffs.

The Celtics still have a 15th spot available on their main roster and could sign one of their two-way players to the final sport, as they did with Neemias Queta toward the end of last season. Queta spent far more time (13.7 minutes per game across 28 games) with Boston last year than any two-way player has this year, but it’s still quite possible that Boston would convert one of the two-way contracts to a guaranteed deal.

I am leaning Davison.
Peterson could probably help more right now, but I think he is behind Baylor so probably still doesn’t play.

This may be the deciding moment for Davison as a Celtic. If they don't sign him now, he may get an offer from someone else before next season.

Sign him to a 3 year $5 million or something.

I'm guessing Davison, if not then he won't be back next year.

I think that Peterson has earned it. Davison to me, is AAAA Player.
= Too good for the G League, but not good enough for the NBA.

I watched the 2nd half of the Maine game. JD couldn’t keep up with Mcclung. His defense will be his Achilles heel. I’d rather it be Peterson and I’ll pay attention to Norris’s development next season in Maine as another potential roster spot next season around this time.

mashing that "no one" button this year

Last year, Queta made sense (sign to the 15th spot late so he's playoff eligible) as Porzingis insurance
This year, Peterson got a few minutes back in November/December(?), but since then we've added Craig and seen the rise of Scheierman.
Even if god forbid you had to play a whole series without Jaylen, I don't think you get any minutes for Peterson.
Same goes for JD Davison and the PG spot -- we're three deep there and would be fine going two deep if necessary.

Given the tax implications, I think they leave the 15th spot empty.
But I'm a losing better on this like three years running, so come at me bro with that 'Cs have signed JD Davison' updates

Philly is building around him. Stand by for the 'New Process' photoshoots of Maxey, Walker, and Yabs.

The money piece makes a ton of sense at this point but they also have said they really like the idea of keeping him, and to a less substantitive point they just traded their whole G-league draft for that Walker guy that plays the same position as that Norris guy they just signed, so if they want to just let JD walk why not just move him on and develop someone they want.

Leaning toward JD at the end of the week but just having more money is always an attractive option as well.

Maybe for the sale thread but when do things become finalized? Can Wyc still throw money around recklessly until that final date and if so when is that?

Normally you'd sign a 15th man just for the tradable salary. But that's based on being able to combine salaries, which the Celtics can't do as they're over the second apron.

I'd like to see Davison get a contract for all the work and accolades from the G-League, but I voted "stay empty". It's already April 7 and there is no need to fill that spot now. Scheierman has become the roster addition, basically sharing that 9th/10th man spot with Queta.

Maybe they bring on JD so that there is a tradeable contract, but it doesn't seem like he is in the plans.

Looks like I blew up the three way tie with a "Stays Empty" vote!

I went with Davison simply because Peterson and Norris have another year of 2-way available, Davison does not. I sign Davison to a bare minimum and a team option for next year, so at least we have a trade chip if we want.

Would be tough for Mr. Davison to see Mr. Norris get the nod.

It’d be a tough look all around if JDD does NOT get the 15th playoff spot after winning MVP of the GLeague.
The C’s talk quite a bit about sacrificing for the team and putting in the hours and so forth
Seems like, even if next season is just a team option Champagnie-style that Brad knows he is not gonna pick up after the season, how do you not reward JD after 3 yrs here???

The 15th man is not gonna play 1 meaningful minute no matter who it is.

The 15th guy is unlikely to matter in the postseason, but Davison's tiny chances of doing so are actually a little higher than the other guys'.

Why? Because there actually is one conceivable use for him, namely as a desperation change of pace when everything the Celtics usually do at the offensive end isn't working.

No one
Save the money
JD isn't an NBA player on the defense side of the floor which will get him 0 minutes on the Celtics roster
Peterson is nice, but Rico and Craig are ahead of him

I am fine with letting these two go if we have to (money and 2nd apron say we have to)

NBA roster things to watch for this weekend (deadline for signings is Sunday):

Boston filling their 15th standard spot (Two-Way callup? Vet signing?)

Golden State filling their 15th standard spot (Two-Way callup? Vet signing?)

Feels like other roster business around the league is complete.
