How overpaid is JB?

Post#1 » by djFan71 » Sat May 17, 2025 6:57 pm

Curious what a poll will show. I went 5-10. I don’t think it’s an albatross or anything, but people make it out that way. This is in a vacuum. Any overpay in our scenario is rough, for other teams not as much.

It's probably a Pritchard over.

I put down $5-10M, too. He's good, but he's not Star good.

We're in a world where other non-superstar / even non-all star wings like Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes, Michael Porter, Desmond Bane, etc. all make $35-45M (and Jaylen is a lot better than these guys). Jaylen makes $53M next year so maybe $5-10M? Some of those guys are overpaid too but that's the market for wings

Right now? I think he's worth his exact contract.

I think you could fit in a 7th or 8th man's salary into the overpay. It's just compounded by being a second apron team and a repeater tax team next season.

Moot point since it was either sign him to his max or lose him when they decided not to trade him. Still a tradeable contract now. Might not be easy to come up with the matching salary though if you're trading for him unless it's the Bucks and Giannis is coming our way lol.

Like Constable said above, the team didn't have a choice when they signed JB to this contract, whether we think he's overpaid or not. (I think he is.)

He'll be the #1 on the team now and, in the absence of Tatum, his pros and cons will be under the microscope like never before. His turnovers may start popping up on Shaqtin' a Fool. The C's obviously won't win as much, and him (as The Guy) may be seen as incapable of carrying them. So the 2025/26 season might damage his trade value, which makes me wonder if parting ways with him now would be best. Easier said than done.

We won the championship, he is ECF MVP and final MVP, he is not overpaid.

Yeah, not rehashing whether we should have signed him. That was clearly a good call. This is more for trade value now / roster building going forward. I keep seeing other teams' fans on T&T board talk about how gross the contract is, wouldn't touch it, etc. So, I wanted to see what our fanbase thought.

Understood. I wouldn't know how to answer the poll though. He's definitely a major talent, just not a max guy.

If he only hadn't made All-NBA in his contract year, lol. I think he's worth a max. Just not a supermax. That extra 5%/one guy hurts.
But, unless we get real value back, I keep him.

If JB didn’t get a super max he was gone. Period. That’s the only reason why he’s wearing a Celtics jersey still. Still a top 15-20 player in the league. So yeah slightly overpaid but depending on how the cap looks after expansion is confirmed it will probably be fair market.

Some of the contracts out there are much more disgusting.

What makes you think he is overpaid?

That is market value for a top 20 player in career. They didn’t overpay him. Makes no sense.

The cap and contracts are so managed, they either pay him that or they let him walk.

If he was a free agent he’d probably get a max deal or as close to it as a team could offer. But I doubt very many teams would be interesting giving up significant value for him on said max deal via trade.

I don’t think he’s really overpaid at all relative to what he’d get as a free agent, but that’s not really apples to apples to talks of trading him on that deal for good players and picks.

JB is a max player, not a supermax.

Starting salary for max is 25% of salary cap.

Supermax has a 30% starting salary of the cap.

He was signed as a super max 35% because he managed to make an all NBA team the year he was extended. He made 35% of the cap this year, which will go down as his raises are less than the cap increases annually.

Yeah, he earned it.

But it's a cap killer because he's not the #1 guy.

Brad should think about long term implications on the cap and it starts on draft night.

The goal should be to be in the hunt until 2032.
