Figured we should have this thread..even if he might get re-routed. That's definitely not a certainty.

He could end up playing for us all of next season, or get moved at the deadline..

Edit: just looked at the comments under that tweet. Looks like he probably tweeted it right after Dame tore his achilles. Dame and Simons played together for Simon's first few yrs in the league..

Good guy to roll the dice on. Worst case he doesn’t pan out and expires next summer. Or he plays decently and we flip him for assets at the trade deadline. Or he plays really well and becomes part of the long term plan. I don’t expect the last option to happen but it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

He’s going to give the Celtics something they haven’t had at the guard position in years which is a guy who can attack and bend a set defense.

Why is his defense bad? Effort? Awareness? Mechanical skills? Something about his body?

Good question..he does seem very quick. But quick guys don't always play good D. Look at Trae, Dame, Kemba, Kyrie, Steph for the first half of his career, etc.

With smaller guards, I think some of them just really commit to dig in and be gritty defenders (Jrue, Alvarado, Beverley, etc.) and some don't.

Also, it seems like the guards who aren't as good defensively are typically higher usage guys (Lamelo, Dame, Trae, Brunson, etc.) whereas the gritty defenders are typically lower usage (suggs, Beverley, Caruso, Jrue, White, etc.)..so it probably has something to do with role. Some of them have big role on offense and then focus less on D, have less energy they can exert on D..

Getting way ahead of things with 2 big IFs, but if 1) he stays and, 2) actually plays respectable D this season, I could see resigning him. I feel like he's one of those guys that's due for a pretty significant paycut, though. Probably above MLE, but not much. 3/$60M +/- range? I doubt anyone throws a huge offer above MLE at him next summer.

Then Brad will flip him on that deal for Wemby, Flagg and a couple 2nds.

I’d offer him that 3/60 extension now and if he balks he’s trade bait or see what happens with the season.

Put him and KP in an escape room where one of the gets to find the deal and sign it. The other gets traded for no money back and some 2nds.

Athletically he should be able to attack and get to the rim but of note is his FTr.

His career FTr is .173 and he posted .174 last season.

Holiday posted a FTr of .143 last season. Simons of players that posted over 800 minutes on BOS last season would rank below Zinger, Kornet, Queta, Tatum, Brown and White in FTr.

Simons is a shooter. I think playing off ball and getting more open 3's should improve his 3PT% and his release is lightning quick.

But Simons just isnt good at attacking. He is pushed around easily and just isnt a natural downhill player.

Just my observation, but flawed-ish guards like Simons seem to have a solid track record of redeeming themselves in Boston. IT4 (most notably) Jordan Crawford, Evan Turner, Brogdon (more injuries than flawed), Schroeder, Ricky Davis. Maybe Simons become a star here

6'1.5" without shoes and 180 pounds. Plus a natural shooter putting a lot of emphasis on the offensive end.

All those guards got turned around and out of here fairly quickly.

But I give Simons less than 48 hours. The potential salary savings outweigh his fit with the team.

Not really gonna get that attached yet but shoots 9 3's a game...he'll fit right in

Also like Tatum he had been improving his assists every year he was in the league. Maybe playing with some winning vets can get him to be an at least serviceable defender and even better playmaker

There was a good couple weeks this season where the sportsbooks couldn’t get his points line down correctly and I made some good money off of him.

It might be tough to explain to Joe why you can't defend well as an undersized guard.
