Do or Don't Dinwiddie?

One of the takeaways from preseason is that when White, Pritchard, and to some extent Brown are off the floor, the Celtics become vulnerable to pressure in the backcourt. They struggled at times to get the ball over half court and to initiate the offense. There are potential ball handlers in the wings, but none are quite ready for prime time. Simons can play the role to some extent, but seems better to have him more off ball so he can play to his strengths. Pritchard gets better each season, but at times will be physically overmatched. And all of these guys will need some rest during the season.

I think it's worth considering bringing in a veteran PG presence, someone with a solid NBA track record, adequate size for when we need a bigger guard, enough experience to help the team, and at a point in their career where they will except a bench role, a minimum contract, and willingness to help mentor the younger Celtics.

However, there hasn't been much to choose from, unless you want to rehash the old Simmons and Westbrook debates.

Not much to chose from.... UNTIL NOW! :o

Enter Spencer Dinwiddie.

Signing Dinwiddie would likely mean that Walsh would need to be released by opening night. I like Walsh, and have been a supporter for the past 2 seasons but he appears to be redundant in the current roster with the addition of Boucher, Minott and González. I don't see many minutes for him in the rotation.

What say ye?

Shoot, I meant this for the Celtics board!

LOL, I'm gonna leave it here. Roast me.

EDIT: I had mistakenly put this on the General board, but our mods kindly moved it here where it belongs.

Or if your team wants Spencer, make a case.

Since tax/apron flexibility is a priority this season for the team, I don't think so... We're only carrying 14, we'd have to cut someone and I like all of our guys better than Dinwiddie.

Even Jordan Walsh, I'd rather have him, as a young player with upside, as a financial matter and as a potential trade chip than try to trade him or waive him. My understanding is that Walsh has only $200k guaranteed but still why pay that cost?

All things considered, I'm not that interested in Dinwiddie

Unless I am missing something, the Hornets signed him to a guaranteed contract in July according to Spotrac and then he was so ass that they cut him after camp.

Don't.

33% from 3, 40% (41%) from the field over the course of his career. Not disruptive defensively. 32 years old. I remember watching him in the '22 playoffs and thinking I would never, ever want him on my team.

The only thing I liked about seeing Jrue go, was that it meant DWhite was now the lead guard, and probably the default team leader. I like him in that role. Pritch is a solid presence, too. No need for Dinwiddie.

I'm guessing that he was waived at his request so that he could sign with the Knicks following Brogdon's retirement. Dinwiddie is looking for a ring at this point, not minutes on the Tatum-less Celtics.

Well that's a good reason, if true. Maybe I should have put a third option: "He's so ass"

I cannot either confirm or deny tho. Sauces?

That does make sense with the Brogdon retirement. He was with Brooklyn a few years ago so maybe wants to return to NY.

I'd Waive Walsh and take a shot at Dinwiddie.
Veteran presence alone is worth it.

Maybe put some Guarantee Clauses in there?

Yep. But I think Curm's thesis above may be the winner. Let's see what happens in the next few days, if Dinwiddie signs with the Knicks.

Definitely worth thinking about for some depth protection, but cap ramifications are still significant for the Celtics so it is a bit more complicated I guess.

Also, any time a bad team waives a player out of the blue it may not be a good sign.

I don't know if he'd want to be the 3rd string PG getting mainly garbage time minutes, but if he'd be up for that for vet min money, we probably couldn't do better. I saw it argued that we already had a log jam of guards with JB, Simons, PP, and White. I don't see it that way. I distinguish between primary ball handlers (PP and White,) and shooting guards, (JB and Simons,) and JB will still get significant time at the 3, not exclusively at the 2. I think we need a third PG. If anything happens to White or PP, the other one can't play all 48, and I don't think the SGs are good enough getting the team over half court and into the offense.

We are flush at wing, otoh. Probably have too many. I would cut bait with Walsh while it only costs us $200K to do so, and bring on a PG.

Anyway, yeah, I'd do it.

I think Celtics will pass as the vets minimum for Dinwiddie is 3.6m.

As a former Mavs fan I'll give my take. He's a streaky shoot first guard who can pass when he wants to and is terrible on defense. Big ego. But he tends to stay healthy and ready to play when needed and you probably could do worse on the minimum market if his skillset is desperately needed

Only if we can still pay him in Doge(n) coin.

Yeah, but he would only count for $2.3M against the Cap, the remainder is paid by the NBPA.

Maybe so. He launched a social project called Calaxy on Hedera back in 2022. Looks like he's back at it, this time on BASE. https://calaxy.com/blog/the-new-internet-why-the-decentralized-web-will-disrupt-the-500b-creator-economy

Scal and Drew would have a field day with him out there on the court with "Crypto P"

If that's the case then Cs can release Walsh and Dinwiddie takes the spot of Walsh.

I've always liked Dinwiddie's game.

Let's see if Brad will do it.
