I know many teams have what they consider a potential star/ great roleplayer just sitting on the bench. I was wondering, do you guys feel you have one? Glen Davis, maybe?

Not Davis. He'll never be more than a role player, at best borderline starter.

Tony Allen is probably the closest. If he gets back to his pre-injury level he could be very good (a big "if"). Other than him many people think Pruitt has big potential. Personally I'm a little more skeptical, but he definitely has the physical traits to be very good.

We always think we have stars on the bench. lol

I'd say that the Celtics Nation feels that Rondo is underrated as a player and will be a star.

On the bench, I think that most agree that Gabe Pruitt is very nice and could be a nice player.

Usually stars actually start for a team though, don't know what your's is doing on the bench. Someone should tell teh coach that, or maybe your potential star is just a player under 30 years of age.

No. Actually, the only potential star we ever had on the bench was Gerald Green. And Rondo/Jefferson before they started.

Introducing Da Celtic Bench

James Posey - backup SF, PF and occasionally SG. Essential 6th man, who along with free agents Eddie House and Scot Pollard, put the Celtics over the top. Just like Posey did on Miami's championship team, James is one of the final 5 players on the floor if Perk/Pollard are not required, which is most of the time. Averages 22 mpg. Responsible for guarding LeBron James. Total Offensive Repetoire consists of shooting 3 point shots or driving to the hoop if there is a lane, or if his defender turns a head or cheats. Averages 5 shots per game for a reason. At 6' 7" barefoot, has the size and strength to body up other players if necessary. Surprisingly quick up and down the floor, boxes out, willing to bang, and a pretty good ball handler for someone his size.

Eddie House - 6' sharpshooter. Great shooter, who tries to bring the ball over the mid-court line, and use his fast hands to disrupt opponents who let him get close enough. The Celtics are his 8th team in 8 seasons. He's finally found a home. Averages almost 1 point for every 2 minutes on the court. His defense and ball handling are not really up to snuff, but are tolerated because of his exceptional shooting ability and high basketball IQ.

Tony Allen - at 6' 3.5" barefoot, has the size to defend PG's well and SG's. He is the Celtics best perimeter defender. Ball handling could use improvement, as could his shot. Has the ability to use his athleticism to make plays, and rebound. Excellent defender to come off the bench, who unfortunately is turnover prone (along with Perk). This season he has a lot more games where he exercises good judgement, particularly in terms of shot selection and when to drive to the hoop. For some reason misses an inordinate amount of layups, perhaps due to not having the athleticism of his pre-ACL injury self; or perhaps due to not staying with the shot (pre-visualizing making it off the glass, and then executing that vision).

Scot Pollard - solid defender, rebounder and good free throw shooting center who is not afraid to bang, or defend his teammates. Thus far, a respectable second stringer on a championship contender, but I wish Doc had more confidence in Scot. Scot is on his 5th team in his 11th season, those teams averaged 52 wins per year. So, Scot has played for some very good teams. Besides Perk, Scot is the only player with the size (6' 10" barefoot) and strength to bang with players like Yao and Zach Randolph. Garnett can do it for spurts, but you don't want Garnett doing the dirty work of banging when you want him roaming on defense and scoring 20 ppg on offense.

Gabe Pruitt - the bright lite on the Celtics bench. Perhaps a Devin Harris type. Decent shot, ball handling needs work. Appears to lack the size to effectively defend most SG's, and is for all intents & purposes the Celtics third string point guard. In that capacity, he might be quite good, and potentially a scoring point guard.

Big Baby - undersized power forward, maybe 6' 7.5" who can't jump and who is not athletic. Sometimes he can beat up on second teams, or take advantage of playing with the Celtics starters. But he is vulnerable to other large power forwards who decide to overpower him, out athletic him, or simply jump over him. A respectable backup, who is not very athletic and who can't jump.

Leon Powe - probably 6' 6" barefoot. Active, good defender and rebounder whose offense is primarily putbacks and screens for shooters.

Brian Scalabrine - the only reason that Brian Scalabrine is in the NBA, and not playing in Argentina, is that he has a contract thru 2010. At 6' 8.75 inches barefoot, he is supposed to be able to defend perimeter Bigs. He is also supposed to spread the floor with his 3 point shooting ability, since his career percent is 34% from 3. However, this is his worst shooting season, he is averaging 28% from 3, 39% overall, and doesn't rebound.

If we did, McHale would have taken him anyway.

The only potential star is Pruitt, and we honestly have no idea how good he'll be. He just looks smooth in garbage time. He's a big PG with a nice handle and a shot. But who knows.

Well, depending on your definition of star, Rondo could be one too. He's already very good defensively, and when he bulks up that wiry frame of his maybe the Billupses of the world won't be able to muscle him. His shooting is lightyears beyond where it was last year and I expect his offense to continue to grow exponentially. He's a fantastic rebounder and passer, and with better shooting will come more blow-bys and dish-offs - more assists. He could eventually be a 16-point, 8 assist guy.

Baby could be a starting NBA player, which is pretty awesome for a 2nd round pick. But I don't see him being a "star."

Allen doesn't have the shooting to be a star. Even if his athleticism totally returned, he'd be a defender/energy guy. Even Bruce Bowen and Raja Bell can shoot the 3. Allen passed up a couple open looks tonight because he doesn't have the confidence. He can certainly improve his shooting, and his athleticism could return, but his upside is as a starting guard. I'd say he has even less of a chance than Baby to be an All-Star. Which is very little.

I'd have to say that Gabe Pruitt could end up being our closet stud.

He'll spend the season between our bench and the Utah Flash gaining valuable experience and learning. Spending each day surrounded by guys like Pierce, Allen, and KG will only help with his development. He carries himself and has the perfect body to be a nice scorer/defender in this league. Very athletic with a nice jump shot and an even more impressive attitude towards life.

I envision Gabe having a successful NBA career. It will take awhile but he'll get there.

Mark my words, he is about to start doing some ish. His first step is back, next comes the athleticism, the pattern is similar to last year, and we all know how good he looked during that stretch.

I pray that he can stay healthy. If he does, I think his potential could be that of a 3rd best player on an elite team...
