I think his performance last night warrants it's own thread, he was great, and if we had won, would have gotten my vote for the cigar

he went on a 12 nothing run, by himself..took over the game .and really showed what he can do and what this bench can do, when he is fully healthy

he had 15 points 4 boards (3 offensive) 2 assists 2 blocks 2 steals in only 17 minutes

we have been saying for a few weeks that he is finally turning the corner, and this is just another indication

for tony

I love Tony Allen. I have been a supporter of his from day one and I knew he would recover and come back strong. Why he only played 17 minutes in a game where he was playing so well is a mystery to me. Had he played more I think the C's would have pulled out that game. Note to Doc: When Tony Allen is playing well and making a huge impact in the game... ride him!

I agree with you. TA's had his ups and downs, but he's been pretty consistent and effective the last few weeks. Hopefully, he'll be rewarded with some consistent minutes. I think he'll be very important to us, come playoff time.

I'll only add that I hope Doc starts playing TA more and reducing Pierce's playing time for the second half of the season.

Where did this jump shot come from?

I think the reason why people get so down on TA is because at times his mistakes are so bad that they stick in your head. IDK sometimes paul plays a little lazy and I get pissed as well. I never get down on KG or RA because their mistakes dont stick like they do with TA's. I dont know its like a love hate relationship with TA. Not sure if that makes any sense but thats how I fell about TA.

Right, he's also leading the team in 3 point % with .440. TA's a stud.

Last night I was disappointed with Doc's late defensive move with 14 sec. left in the game. TA was guarding Calderon with Ray Allen on the court.

At the last second Doc took out Ray Allen and put Rondo in the game. Rondo guarded Calderon. Calderon took it to the basket and scored the game winner. I think Doc would like that one back.

It would have been nice if TA was guarding Calderon on that last play. TA played great and is a very useful player.

Yeah we were talking about this on the game thread. At least Doc knew what the right move was and just didn't trust his guts. It was a weird game from Doc in that he seemed to know what the right adjustments were but was tentative in pulling the trigger. I'd like to see Doc get a little less conservative.

Funny, it was a real physical display of the concept of second guessing oneself. The possible rationale didn't dawn on me, as I was in the moment and commented only to his apparent indecisiveness, but I sense that he had Billups flashbacks which caused him to change his mind.

I have the same feelings as you do. I don't know, maybe its because you seen him as a rookie to now and you just hate it when he make those same mistakes but love him more when he plays lights out. All I want now from him is more consistency.

It's really good to see TA playing well again. He has played pretty well in the last 2-3 weeks. he needs to play more IMO, maybe 22-28 minutes a game.

I felt like it his play last night warrented it's own thread as well. Last night was the fist night it seemed like he played without having to slow down or as if he wasn't playing with pain in his knees. That's the sign we've been waiting for and hoping will become a trend.

I'm sure he'll have plenty of more bad games coming up, as his last 4 weren't excalty ground-breaking. But here's another random sampling that gives hope he can recover.

If he does that gives us a backup at SG and SF [TA and Posey] to limit one of Ray or Pierce's minutes some more. Maybe get them at a KG level of 35. But that depends if Doc even wants a complete second unit on the floor since we probuly won't run one in the playoffs this year.

This is a great way of putting it!

Paul Pierce's mistakes can be similarly frustrating which is why some folks have had such big problems w/him over the years despite the great overall numbers.

TA will never be that consistent, but even if Pierce is one stupid mistake every 50 minutes and TA is one stupid mistake every 20 minutes, it biases people's judgment about the player in the same way. I have always been a fan of players who make aggressive rather than passive mistakes and TA is still the same guy -- athleticism or no. He does not have elite levels of concentration, but I always felt at OK St. like he was a guy that could be counted on. If the Celtics are going to do big things in the playoffs, then TA will probably be a big part of it...

it crazy how effectively, even with his knee, he gets to the basket and draws fouls, some may not agree as i may be going out too far on a limb here

but he might be the best pure slasher on the team

TAs month by month splits:

November: 3.6 pts, 1.3 ast, 1.6 reb, .58 stl
December: 6.6 pts, 1.6 ast, 2.6 reb, 1.14 stl
January: 7.6 pts, 1.3 ast, 2.2 reb, 1.18 stl

The numbers show that TA is slowing improving each month and will be a big factor once the playoffs come around. I wouldn't be surprised if Tony will become our leading scorer off the bench once the season ends.

First of all this should be in the "I hate Tony Allen" thread from a couple of weeks ago. But it should be fun to compare and contrast peoples takes when he plays well and when he lays a turd.

I have to look at it some more but I think that Tony has gone back to his natural release. Which is but ugly but effective. At OSU Tony had an unstoppable mid range game but lacked 3pt range on his jumper. He could knock it down from the set just not rising up. I think they tried to fix his release and make it more traditional which took away his confidence in it, the kid is an instictive player. If I get a chance today I may try and look at what his technique has been as an NBA player but he is firing that thing from his ear right now and it is falling.

Even this year, you could almost see the mouse on the treadmill working in his head when he would get the ball at 18-20 ft wide open, like he was on the tee with a driver in his hand and water up the right side. Now he is cocking that thing next to his ear and letting it go.

I've never been a huge TA fan - especially as a point guard - but geez, the kid is sure showing me something. He's been playing really well. He does go through some times when he looks tentative or, frankly, stupid, but for the most part he has been a real value-adder. He's always had the energy, he's always played good D, he's always crashed the glass hard, but now he's emerged as a decent 2nd option when our 1-star lineup is in the game.

He was phenomenal against Toronto. Good stuff. I can't wait to see what he is capable of if and when his explosiveness fully returns. (I still don't like him at PG, though.)

Unrelated but as much as I like the way Powe has played well, I don't understand why Baby's minutes have been limited. The guy is a real finisher and does the things that Powe does. I'd much prefer to see either of those guys before Scal. And I say this after watching Scal's best game as a Celtic in a long, long time.

Yeah my favorite way to describe Tony is MJ on crack and how it goes depends on how much more of one you get than the other.

As for the second part can you say trade bait. If the C's want Cassel for example the only package they really have is Tony/Scal/Powe. That would be enough for Cassel and Josh Powell who for some reason the Clippers gave a 3 year deal to even though he sucks.

Whether or not it is for Cassel any deal around the deadline is basically going to be built around these assets. You have to show that they can play a little if you want someone to pay them.

2-solid role player
1-fringe nba talent

tony has always ranked at a 3+ for me--------look at my threads years ago
he impacts both ends

but i am getting concerned with tony----its as if he wont pay the price to reach full potential

lots of mishandling of the basketball is the most pressing concern i have
he will consistently impact both ends of the floor if he will put the time and work
