Could Delonte be reacquired midseason?

Post#1 » by Fencer reregistered » Wed Jan 30, 2008 11:23 am

Wiretap reports that Delonte hasn't unpacked his boxes, says he isn't even getting practice time, and generally expects to be traded.

I believe we have a trade exception in exactly the amount of his salary. Given that, are there any CBA restrictions on trading to get him back?

I know he's not exactly an ideal steady vet PG, but at least he has familiarity with some of the team, as well as with whatever part of the system carried over from prior years. And frankly, I don't recall him being a PG liability so much as I recall him being not-an-asset at PG. That could put him ahead of House and Tony in that role.

A deal would make no sense unless the plan was to extend him (I imagine the cost would be Pruitt and a 2nd). But with Pruitt being a conversion project himself, maybe it makes sense to just go with Delonte, declare the perimeter talent a done deal, and focus the offseason on beefing up the pivot.

As far as the CBA goes, you can't reacquire a player, by trade, that you have previously traded, in the same season (June-June.)

Now, if they were to cut him loose and he cleared all the other teams, with none of those teams making waiver claim, we could then pick him up.

why is everyone so obsessed with getting West back. His skills are in between House and TA. He doesn't really add anything to the team that isn't contained in other players. People need to let go of their binky. West would only mess up the rotation and doesn't add much.

I definitely wouldn`t mind bringing him back in the offseason. He is not perfect but he would add some depth to our team.

We might be able to - but I'd much rather have mighty mouse then a selfish me first player who can't even find time on a lousy team..

Why all the love for that scrub Delonte West? He is not a fit for this team. We might have to give up House or Tony for him and both of them are better than West. West can't shoot it like House, can't defend like Tony and can't run a team like Rondo. Still can't use his off hand, is still a very streaky and inconsistent shooter and still isn't a good decisionmaker on the court and he can't stay healthy. What the heck do we need him for? All he's going to be doing is sitting on the bench pouting like he was when he lost his job to Telfair and Rondo.

No thanks. Don't want to see this guy on the C's again. What is it with people who want to bring back all the losers from last year's horrible team?

I can't imagine anyone better at backup 1,2, he's right there in the mix with House and Allen. We all know he is not perfect, but he is servicable, a fan favorite, and probably cheap (who knows really). Why all West-hate really? Noone's suggesting him to start in place of Rondo, he'll be a backup fighting for minutes with Allen and House, probably as the best ballhandler of the 3.

over mighty mouse at 34 yes, for defense
better handle than TA, yes
better handle than House, no
better defender at the point than Eddie, yes
I'd be afraid he'd stifle Rondo's development, but if Rajon gets injured, I'd be happy with West as backup pg.

becuase he is not that good and doesn't add anything to team that isn't already contained in other players. if anything bringing him back in would upset team chemistry and mess up playing time.

house and ray allen are better shooters

rondo and TA are better defenders

rondo, pierce and ray allen are better ball handlers and passers. hell, house is probably a better ball handlers. at least, he can use his off hand.

TA, rondo, and Pierce are good slashers. west is can't even be said to be a bad slasher is just isn't a slasher. period.

what does west bring to the table?

he is a streaky shooter, an average defender, and a below average point guard. he is somewhere between the 1 and 2 spot. he does bring some nostalgia of the DA-youth-fetish-binky-days, which some posters, for reasons i cannot grasp, seem to long for.

if anything, the Cs need a guard who can fill in the distributor role if Rondo goes down with injury. Say what you will about West but he definitely cannot fill that role any better than House. If DA doesn't sign Damon Stoudamire, which it looks like its not going to happen, the best option is to have PP be the main distributor on offense and House can play the role of the shooting guard.

Simply, put West does not bring anything to the table that the team needs. all his skills are contianed in better players who are already established in the rotation.

i don't think the question should by why all the West hate becuase, first, it isn't hate it's legit criticism of fundamentally flawed player; second, and more importantly, the question should be why all the West support?

the answer, i think. is the same reason that i want to see Antoine back on the team: becuase we are fans who develop irrational attachments to certain players. logically, i know that Antoine brings nothing to the table that isn't contained in Posey, Big Baby and Powe. In fact, he would probably eat up minutes from Powe and Big Baby and hurt their development but whatever i want to see Antoine back because he is one my favorite celtics. why is my favorite Celtic? i can't really say. i understand he is not that good anymore and largely squandered his talent. he could have been an amazingly talented point forward be ended up a halfassed point forward who wanted to be three point specialist. i can recognize my irrational thinking but i whatever i long for the OB days becuase i am fan who loved those underdog teams. i think fans who long for the DA-youth-fetish-binky-days and want West back need to recognize that, while it would satisfy their irrational feeling as fan, it wouldn't help the team and, more likely, would hurt the team by upsetting the rotation.

Havnt posted in a while, but I gotta put my 2 cents in on this one. I would LOVE to see D West back in Celtic green. I'd certainly rather have Del than Damon, and Sammy aint walkin' through that door until the offseason. Del is a GREAT energy guy - always gives you 110% on the court. He's young and hungry, a solid defender, and can shoot the rock. Getting Del back would be an outstanding upgrade behind Rondo - an excellent fit in my opinion. I'd gladly give up Gabe to get West back, but if its true that we cant require him via trade, and that he'd have to clear waivers first, I dont see us getting him. I doubt he'd clear waivers. But the slimmest possibility of getting West back just brightened my day.

You can't imagine anyone better?! Really?! This is a guy who is shooting .395 from the field. That's right UNDER 40%. I'd like to know what exactly he does better then House. And don't say defense because the numbers don't support it. House is MUCH stronger and just as quick (which isn't saying much).

Delonte West is AMONG THE WORST PLAYER IN THE NBA. He doesn't see time on a bad team. He shoots under 40%. The dude is not long for the league.

You really want this guy to get minutes over a guy who can stick DAGGERS in other teams with his three? A MONEY three point shooter?! Why?

I swear some of you enjoy losing basketball games.

Come one Pete. One of the worst players in the league? That is just ridiculous. He is no allstar but he is a nice role player...

I don`t know what he did to you but there has to be something because your hate for him seems to be unlimited...

Pete may be being a bit hyperbolic when he says west is one of the worst players in the league but still the facts remain: he is shooting under forty percent and isn't getting time on one of the worst teams in the league. that does not speak well for him. i don't know if that makes him "a nice role player," especially when the celtics have role players like house (who is a far superior shooter) and TA (who is a far superior defender and slasher).

wow, I am shocked at the hate for west. there isnt a tougher point guard in the NBA. the guy will fight centers for rebounds, play great defense and throw himself on the floor for any ball. not to mention he is a great passer and can shoot the ball well. he knows where to put the ball.

DS would not fit as good on this team as DW. DW was liked here by the players and fans and he ran the offense quite well.

I personally thought west was excellent as a celtic.

I agree for the most part. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's one of the worst in the league, but he does suck.

It's just unbelievable that people want him back. I don't get it. :dontknow:

BTW: its pretty easy for your #'s to be down when your getting limited min. he is at .395 . it isnt the weorst in the league.

look at his past #'s. they are respectable.

I like West, but he would bring nothing to the table that Eddie House doesn't. What the team clearly needs is a backup PG with ability to get the team into an offense and someone who is somewhat as a threat as a playmaker. Eddie House is fine most nights IMO, but there are definitely some nights against good defensive teams where he struggles to get the team into the halfcourt offense. On these occasions, the team needs a PG who can break a press, create an easy shot, and get the team into their sets. I imagine Eddie House would have no problem switching to the 2 at times, I actually figure he might like that very much.

1) It's a percentage - it's pretty easy for your numbers to be UP if your getting limited minutes as well no? <g>

2) If he is so good how come he doesn't see time on a bad team? I guess Danny was dumb to trade him and Seattle is dumb to not play him right? Or maybe he just isn't very good.

And yes I can say he is one of the worst players in the league.. When your small, physically weak, and a poor shooter with a bad handle your not a good NBA player. He might be likable but if you can't beat out a failing Earl Watson and a defensive turnstile in Luke Rindnour your not long for this league. Those guys would at best be backups on almost any other team.

I will say it again Eddie House who is a JOURNEYMAN NBA player making only 1.5 million > Delonte West. That surely doesn't put West in the upper 3/4 of NBA players.

Signing D. West in the off-season would be a no brainer for this club. He'd come dirt cheap and we all know what he did in green. The fact is he is more comfortable playing in a Celtic uni and could really help out when any guard gets hurt. You also add another penetrator and 3 point threat. There'd be no reason not to sign him.
