commissioner stern is an idiot
Just saw on espn Stern wants to put five nba teams in europe in the next ten years. This is a huge mistake and I hope this does not happen no more teams the league is watered down enough. This is an american game lets keep it here. Stern is being very greedy and this will ruin the game. I hope the european leagues fight this possible expansion. Someone needstotalk tostern about this and forget europe. Itwillbe a prime target forterrorist stay inour country on our continent not someone else.

Hopefully the Celtics winning a title will give him a heart attack.
What's wrong with you? That's a horrible thing to say...
And Celtics winning will not give him a heart attack. He wants the Celtics to win because we have a lot of fans and the NBA will make a lot of money. Please think before you post.

Europe already has enough leagues of their own, and we don't need any more NBA teams. The travel would become ridiculous for teams and the season would have to be extended.
If he wants he could make a semi-annual summer league or something where the european teams face american teams in a playoff format. Sort of what happens with the world baseball classic.

Actually, it takes about 5 hours to fly to London from NY. Much closer than NY to LA, but flying from LA to Europe will be a pretty horrible flight.

Exactly. There is not much difference between LA-BOS and BOS-Europe... And the teams from west would go to eastern conference for a few games and then from there to Europe...

stupid idea. its bad enough when guys don't want to go to Milwaukee or back when steve francis didn't want to play for vancouver...
but can you imagine american boys dreaming of playing for the knicks or sixers being drafted for a team in berlin?
berlin during the winter time, so far away from families and friends and ppl who speak your language....not going to work!

I don't know about you, but if I had to choose, I'm choosing Paris, Rome, Barcelona, or London over half of NBA homes (Charlotte, Milwukee, Utah, Memphis, Indiana, Detroit, San Antonio, Minnesota, Denver...)

I actually like the concept of moving to Europe. Basketball is quickly becoming a global sport, and I don't believe in being exclusive about it. In fact, I would be ecstatic to be able to share interest in a professional sports league with someone from Berlin. Basketball is one of the few sports where this is possible. Further, this would be a great way to get more media insight into foreign cultures, which is already hard enough without us trying to keep out of European business.
My only issue is that the practicalities of the whole thing are horrifying. Having European teams in an American league would lead to a whole mess of issues, the most obvious being travel, but there are also legal and political issues that haven't been mentioned. How about Americans trying to get visas to work in countries in the European Union, for example? This is often an issue with EPL teams trying to buy American soccer players. The process can take months, and isn't really conducive to the player transaction model of the NBA, in which free agency and trades result in a lot of player movement on short notice. And I would feel sorry for any player who was traded to a European team mid-season against his will; you can't just pack up and move your family to France without planning it out, and it would be sad to have to raise a family from the other side of an ocean.

How much would it cost the NBA to buy a fleet of 10 Concordes?
All teams would fly their private jets to a hub (probably NYC) and then take the Concorde ongoing to Paris/London/Madrid or whatever other cities were in the Euro NBA.
The schedule would need to be adjusted and it would definitely favor East Coast teams, but it doesn't seem completely impossible...

This sounds interesting on the surface, but there are some huge problems with this idea.
As most of you have already said, travel would be terrible. The west coast teams would be looking at flights of around 12 hours, which would seem like longer because of jet lag from the flight. There would have to be a three day grace period around those games just so the players can adjust to the time differences.
The other big problem, is that very few players from America are going to want to play in Europe. I don't think many American born or Canadian born players are going to want to get traded or drafted to a team overseas where the country doesn't speak English and has a totally different culture. Those teams would never compete because unless they got all the Euro talent, the American born players aren't going to go there as a free agent. I don't care how much money is offered, I don't think you're going to see a guy like Lebron or Dwyane Wade leave the country and their famillies to go play for a European team.

I am sure the Players Association loves this idea. up to 75 new members. But can you imagine how bad those teams would be?
I mean if Steve Francis forced a trade before he played one game from Vancouver to Houston can you imagine what would happen here.
Let's fast forward to David Stern in 2015
"With the 1st pick in the 2015 NBA Draft the Paris Crepe Makers select......"

They could just send a whole division out to Europe at once to get the road games over with. Then after every division from the Eastern Conference has visited Europe, they could send the European division out to America to get their American road games over with in the Eastern Conference. Repeat this with the Western Conference after a few weeks so the European Division/Conference can play games between themselves.
The European division could fit road and divisional games in while a whole American division came over too.
They could make it work I think...something like that. The problem is that the league will become too watered down.
