Monitor the waiver wire

Does anyone know of any latest rumors of players being cut?

New Orleans is said to have an interest in PJ Brown or possibly Chris Anderson. While Detroit wouldn't mind signing Dale Davis. But, nothing is imminent in either case. For Boston, maybe Toronto will buyout Primoz Brezec.

54. What are waivers?

It's a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A player released between August 15th and the end of the regular season stays on waivers for 48 hours. A player released at any other time stays on waivers for seven days. During the waiver period other teams may claim a waived player. If more than one team tries to claim the player, the team with the worst record gets him. If a player on waivers is claimed, the new team acquires his existing contract and pays the remainder of his salary. There is also a fee of $1,000, payable to the league office, for claiming a waived player.

A team can claim a waived player only if one of the following is true:

* The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.

The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 19).

The team has a Traded Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 69).

The player's contract is for one or two seasons and he is paid the minimum salary.

If no team claims a waived player, he is said to have "cleared waivers." The player may sign with a new team of his choice, and the player's prior team continues to pay the guaranteed portion of the terminated contract (see question number 90 for more information). The player's salary with his new team is a matter of negotiation. Few players are actually claimed while on waivers, since the team claiming a waived player inherits his entire contract. It is far more common for teams to wait for the player to clear waivers, and then sign him to a much smaller (even minimum salary) contract.

If a player is waived after March 1, he is ineligible to be included in the playoff roster of any team that signs him for the remainder of that season.

If a team trades a player and the player is waived by the receiving team, the player's original team cannot re-sign that player for 30 days (during the season) or 20 days (during the offseason) following the date of the trade.

Bonsa, good stuff. Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize a team had to be under the cap to claim a player off waivers unless that have a trade exemption totalling that players salary. At this point we could basically only claim a player earning the league minimum.

I wonder if he has a lot of suitors?

Still, Ainge should talk to his agent and work something out for the sake of depth for the Celtics at big man. On the bad side, with Magloire, either Powe or Davis will lose playing time if neither is playing at center anymore.

4 - Garnett, Scalabrine, Powe and Davis
5 - Perkins, Magloire and Pollard

Guards Brent Barry, Ronald Murray and center Jamaal Magloire are on Boston's radar. Of these names, I like Barry for his versatility.

And Chris Anderson but he'll likely re-sign with New Orleans.

I like the idea of Magloire as depth in the frontcourt. I could see him being re-signed in the off season replacing Pollard.
Barry should be option 1 for the back court. He can play the 1,2, or 3 on the court, not to mention he has been playoff tested. If we can't get Barry I think Flip would give us what we need without upsetting our rotation. He is insurance in case of injury to anyone in the backcourt.

I dont like Flip as an option at all. He doesn't really help us as a ball-handling, distributing point guard. He's a scoring guard, but not really a good shooting guard even. I'd rather just let House have the minutes if he's our only option.

Imagine if you're the Celtics and you feature outside shooters: Ray Allen, House and Barry. Move over Toronto. And Pierce, Posey, Scalabrine and somewhat Tony Allen all having perimeter range to boot. It's called a spread offense.

Francisco Elson is another name I'll be watching for until the March 1 waiver deadline passes.

He was rumored to be a buy-out candidate after arriving in Seattle, and he's the kind of long, mobile defender the C's could use inside, with Perk and Pollard taking care of the bulk, and Powe and Big Baby serving as the better all-around players, but also being several inches shorter.

Elson and KG have had some run-ins in the past, but it was in the heat of a playoff matchup (Wolves and Nuggets in 2004) and if he felt he could help the team, I'm sure KG would put aside former differences.

Anyone heard anything about Elson vis a vis the Sonics?

I've only seen Elson play a handful of times and mostly in the preseason, but I have always liked what I've seen. I'd take him over Magloire. He be a useable mobile 4/5, better than Pollard or Scal.

To those in support of a Cassell addition, are you concern that Cassell and agent would've until this Friday and would've to still wait like forty-eight hours to clear waivers before Boston or any team could sign him? I mean he must be on his new team before or on March the 1st.

Sam Cassell and the Clippers appear to be parting ways soon. Cassell, the team's veteran point guard, confirmed wide speculation today that he is seeking a buyout of his contract. "They've been discussing it, so what more can I say?," said Cassell, 38. "Both parties are getting to a number and saying, 'OK, this is what we'll do it for.' I just want to be treated fairly." He just needs to be waived by March 1; he can sign at any time, and still be eligible for the playoffs. A lot of the media keeps getting this one incorrect.

Do you know what the most the Celtics can sign Cassell to? Can it be multiple years or only for the duration of this season?

NBA sources indicated that the Celtics, Mavericks, and Nuggets all are prepared to make Cassell an offer once he clear waivers in 48 hours. All three teams have their biannual exceptions available to give to Cassell (a maximum of $1.83 million) while the Mavs have their full mid-level available ($5.356 million) and Denver has $2.356 of its mid-level. The Celtics have spent all of their mid-level. Boston Globe
