1996 Slam Dunk competition

Since there's a lot of talk of Brent Barry becoming a free agent. I'd thought it would be cool to go back to 1996 and watch his dunks in the slam dunk competition. Interesting. I don't remember (likely since I never watched a lot of these live) each participant having an allotted time limit in which they must complete as many dunks as they can in the first round. Perhaps, the NBA could return to this format. I mean this format was fine. It was the players of this particular year that were unimpressive. Finley should have won it. A WTF to Armstrong's embarrassing performance, Kenny Smith's shirt and Reggie Miller's tie. WTF?!

Yes, Barry won the event with the exact same dunk that got him into the next round from the first round. Lol. And people want to misjudge Gerald Green for doing the same dunk back-to-back but in a different fashion.

That was 96? Wow i feel old. That seems like yesterday to me. I hate threads like this for that reason... :P

Brent Barry in 96 is so far from the player he is now. Hahaha...This is almost irrelevant...

And I agree with Pete. It doesn't seem that long ago...

In the first round Greg Minor had one of the nicest alley oops I've ever seen. He just floated in with his head up near the ring.

Man, what a terrible dunk contest.

But hey, Greg Minor sighting! I remember that guy. Why didn't he ever get good ... ?

The one memory I've from this year, other than Barry winning it on that rehashed dunk, was Minor being upset not just that he'd lost but lost to Barry who, in his opinion, he'd performed more difficult dunks.

I'll be honest, I doubt any of these players could last beyond the first round in today's version of the slam dunk competition. But, it should be an event for rookies since they share more enthusiasm to participate than the stars you would prefer to see enter like LeBron James or any other high profiled star player who'd chosen to skip it during their career.

Never thought I'd hear Minor's name again.

Could've been a nice one, but hip problems and domestic issues ended his career.

Actually shocked to find this article on him. Glad he's doing well

Correct me if I'm wrong. But, was Minor's son featured on the cover of S.I.?

Edit: I found the cover.
