I would have liked Ratliff. But I think PJ Brown is a better fit. We needed someone who can hit a perimeter shot and play respectable defense. Brown is solid in both areas. Ratliff is definitely better defensively. But he is pretty useless offensively.

Yeah, I liked the idea of bringing Theo back for a while, but it never even got a spark in the rumor mill.

Maybe there was something to those stories that Ratliff was upset about being traded. IDK, but now he has a chip on his shoulder against us in the playoffs. Question is, can he play?

At this point I think the team got the right guy. After all, Brown did at least play last year and has been fairly durable.

I agree that PJ is a better fit. Ratliff is better defensively, but right now I think the Celtics need a big who can defend AND score. PJ Brown fits the bill to a T.

The Cs need a big who can defend centers and stay healthy.

Ratliff meets one but not both of those criteria.

PJ was the primary vet bigman target of pretty much every contending team looking for help inside (which is pretty much every contending team). He started for a 50-win team last year, and he's played in at least 72 games in each of the last 8 years. Theo would have been a nice fall back, but PJ was the prize, and the C's got him.

That said, I honestly wonder if the Wolves would have agreed to give Theo a buy out if it was likely he was going to return to Boston. I doubt they'd appreciate any other comments about McHale doing his old buddy Ainge a favor with the KG trade, and waiving a veteran center who was a major (financial) part of that deal and having him immediately return to Boston and join the C's rotation would have elicited more comments along those lines.

Mostly, I wish the Mavs had waited to sign Magloire, because you have to think they would have preferred Theo, and I'd much rather have seen him o West than bolster the Pistons' frontcourt rotation.

I wouldn't want to take a chance on Ratliff because he's never healthy, unless he faked the last one with Minnesota.

pj is >>> than ratliff. plus brown can score, he is bigger and very durable.

Ratliff doesn't have much left. We already have a big sitting at the end of the bench not playing we don't need another. P.J. is just what the doctor ordered. He plays a majority of the games each seasons and plus he has playoff experience.

The irony of these two at this point is that they are probably reversed as far as what the bring. Brown at his best was a great PF at both ends, a really productive player, but he wasn't a true C. Theo was a little bit better than average production wise but was the defensive standard. Overtime and injuries Theo's production actually outshined his defense as he became a shot blocker more than an a man to man defender. As time robbed PJ of his all around game his post defense became the staple of what he does. He can't really stay with most PF's anymore but nobody has the kind of size that made it difficult for him to play the 5 so he is now a decent defensive center.

PJ is certainly more dependable and a guy who has been effective in a bench role. Theo is made of glass and frankly some of his time spent on the sideline has been questioned. He also has been a starting when effective, he may have had a stretch of effective play coming off the bench in POR but certain guys are certain ways. That said both guys have exploded in the post season to be real difference makers in their careers.

Well given that whoever comes out of the West is going to have a huge front line, its probably not the dumbest idea to stack up on bigs
