Tommy? Is he right?

What is your favorite Tommy quote? Mine is:

"Awful Call! Violet (Palmer), go home to your mother."

Forget for a second the label of the old crazy uncle, and everyone outside Celtic nation who thinks Tommy is senile.

My question is, do you think Tommy is correct in assuming that the game has degraded to players becoming actors, to get a call?

These rules are put in places to make the game safer, protect players from getting injured. Have they gone over board?

Thanks,
Night SS

I like Tommy, infact there should be a Tommy Nation. I couldn't imagine not expressing my feelings to the ref on a bogus calls.

Celtic games just wouldn't be right without Tommy and Cous.

I watch the NBA, so do you have anything to add?

Its not so black and white as you think. People do have different opinions. If Refs call the game evenly the negative impact cancels out, but the game becomes safer.

The issue is not so much is it going on, but is it a good or bad thing and to what extent?

Also, have some fun and tell us your favorite Tommy quote.

Acting to sell a call, bitching to the refs, etc. are all part of being a professional who's trying hard to win a game. If exaggerating a foul is how you get the calls, then you better be doing that every time.

Flopping should be a techical similar to the NHL calling a unsportsmanlike penalty on a player flopping. It's pure pussy play.

No it's not a pussy play because it's not that easy to time the hit and throw your body on the hardwood floor. Why don't you try it? I bet you couldn't flop like that without as you said, pussing out and trying to break your fall with your arms or something.

I don't disagree that flopping should be a T, but as long as it's not, a player should do it. And it's not a pussy move to do it either. Pussy move is to get out of the way and let your man get to the basket.

Agreed. But this isn't happening.

getting a call isnt as easy as you think. bruce bowen couldn't slash through the lane, get contact, and go to the line. steve nash couldn't move his feet laterraly quick enough to take a charge from an elite gaurd.

yes, there is a lot of flopping involved, but if you notice, it's usually very talented players that did/do it (vlade divac, reggie miller, manu ginobli, james posey, dwayne wade, etc.).

that being said, i do agree that the refs should be more aware of it, because often times, there are too many fouls called.

Reggie Miller not only flopped, he would kicks his legs out when he took a jumper, almost whacking his defender in the nuts, and then HE'D get the call.

I liked Reggie but he got very dirty toward the end of his career.

One rule change that I would like to see is to make it a double personal foul and a technical foul, to pull a man down; and, if the call is missed in a game but present upon a team's challenge for a film review, the player pulling the other player down would be assessed two personal fouls and a technical foul towards his next game.

That double foul, with the addition of a technical, would possibly solve the problem of players pulling other players to the floor when they can not defend the play.

Especially with the credit towards the next game upon film review.

How about a 25 points and an automatic win on the next game if you make a full court shot?

Hahahahaha.

You're right, he was pretty dirty throughout, but it got REALLY bad toward the end. Like Stockton, Malone, and Kareem, they got away with a lot but when the skills eroded, they made up for it with the dirty tactics

Foul shots are BORING! I flip channels during foul shots and I am not alone. That is not good for the game.

Look up how many foul shots Kobe and Wade average per game. Then see how many calls Bird and McHale got on an average night. It's like two to one.

I, for one, have never understood why if I hit your hand after the shot is off I get called for a foul. I did not effect the shot; you should not get a second chance. It is just my opinion but I think the game would be a lot better off without so many free throws.

No, you're correct. It's like in football, when they call back a play because of a holding penalty or something else like that on the other side of the field that had NO BEARING whatsoever on the outcome.

They need to get back letting the players play. Basketball *is* a contact sport, after all!
