OT: Am I Wrong?

Post#1 » by canman1971 » Fri Apr 4, 2008 9:54 pm

I know this really is pretty stupid, but it really bothers me when writers for ESPN don't know anything. This is what JA Adande wrote today regarding the Knicks and their not having a 2010 draft pick.
J (Milwaukee): By the way the Knicks don't own their #1 pick in 2010. So if they continue to tank for the next two years and shave salaries, the best current high school junior could be a Utah Jazz in 2010!

SportsNation J.A. Adande: For free agent purposes, the Knicks are better off not having that pick because they won't have to hold cap space for it

Now, if he put one ounce of thought into this and realized that if a team was over the cap, then 99% of the NBA would not be able to sign their players! The Knicks suck so bad right now and this tool is trying to justify them giving away their 2010 pick? And this guy gets paid? Am I wrong to think this way?

I think you are misinterpreting the suggestion.

Yes, yo can go over cap to sign draft picks. But, they still count towards the cap.

If they are going to take a run at LBJ in 2010, a top 5 pick will knock off $5 million on their cap per season. That is probably a quarter of the money available.

I don't think that matters. Lets say the draft whoever on June 29th of 2010. They don't have to sign him right away, and FA signing period starts lets say July 14. Sign LeBron, then later on, sign your first round pick. I may matter against the luxury cap, but since when did the Knicks care about that?

I believe the slot is already taken up and that salary slot is reserved. By not having the pick, that open up more money for the free agency period. It's something like that. You can't game the cap by deferring when you sign the contract.

OK, but is it even a good thing to suggest a team that sucks so bad that losing its top 10 or even 5 pick is a good thing without receiving anything of value in return? LeBron doesn't win without players around him. That is why he won't win in Cleveland. Bad management will always trump great players.

What Adande is referring to is the completion of the Howard Eisley or
Shandon Anderson trade from, I think, 2003.

The pick was heavily protected, top 23 in 2008, top 22 in 2009 or thereabouts; and UNPROTECTED in 2010.

So, technically, Adande is right, the Knicks 2010 First Round Pick will be going to Utah, unless the Knicks can somehow manage one of the top 8 or 9 records in the NBA next season, in which case Utah would get a twenty somethingish pick next season.

I understand the pick is going to Utah. My point is JA is saying the Knicks are better off not having what probably will amount to a top 5/10 pick. That is idiotic.

well that's there salary structure. If we're talking 10/11 season they should be able to sign Lebron to a max deal outright.
