Pierce's "There can only be one" commercial

Post#1 » by Rocky5000 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 5:34 pm

Did anyone else catch this last night? It's a split between Pierce and....MIKE BIBBY. I have no idea why they would pick Bibby to talk about his passion for winning in the playoffs, especially after his showing in game 1 and comments afterward. If they wanted to pick a Hawks player they should have picked Joe Johnson, Horford, or at least Josh Smith. Does the NBA figure that Bibby is the only well-known player on the Hawks? Unfortunately I can't find the video on youtube. If anyone has a link please post it.

I did like the other ones they had done, Nash/Kidd Paul/Howard KG/Lebron, and Shaq/Kobe.
However, I read that they're supposed to do 25 commercials, so we might end up with some pretty lame ones by the time it's over.

Interesting. I can't find it on YouTube, but I'll keep an eye out for it tonight.

I mean, it makes sense to have a player from the Hawks do one of these commercials, and it's fitting given the matchup, but you'd think they'd get Joe Johnson, or even Al Horford, to do the split with Paul Pierce. They seem to be more the "faces" of the Hawks franchise than Bibby. But what do I know? I'm a poster on a message board.

    @Bibby in the commercial. He has never been recognized as being great or anything within the league (the way Pierce has) and he's only been with the Hawks a few months.

BTW the KG commercial is awesome, as is the KG/Celtics Gatorade commercial about making history.
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

That commercial makes me want to go downtown and start dropkicking people in the chest. Using the first movement of Carl Orf's "Carmina Burana" as the soundtrack, while cliche, only adds to it!!!

I actually played that piece in orchestra in college, and I totally wanted to clothesline the entire cello section. True story.

u say there's supposed to be about 25 of those commercials?

i LOVE the KG one. i like what he says in it.

"i dreamed about winnin it all since i was prolly nine years old. I remember seeing bird win it all. i made up my mind right then, that was gonna be me...that i was gonna be part of that. some dreams fade over time...but not this one."

it gives me chills. any idea on who the other commercials are going to be?

Bibby is easily the most recognizable Hawk. Plus he has BY FAR the best playoff pedigree on the Hawks. In fact, he and JJ are the only two guys on the roster with any playoff experience at all. You have to realize that there isn't much to pick from when it comes to our team, especially when marketing the playoffs.

If they were going to pick a Hawk (that's what surprised me, that they put a Hawk on there in the first place), it's Bibby.

Makes sense to me, but I would have picked JJ. He was an allstar afterall.

I would have picked him too. But as basketball fans, we know who he is. The casual fan likely wouldn't even recognize JJ, but Bibby's ugly mug is pretty easy to identify.

Not to mention they edited the living crap out of it. I realize it's a commercial, but since freaking EVERYBODY uses that song for stuff like this, It's obnoxiously transparent how much it got cut up.

With all the music out there I don't understand why it has to be freaking Carmina Burana all the time. That's the nice thing about the "There can only be one" commercials. I think they've actually hired composers who score for films and visual media. And if they didn't it's certainly obscure enough so that it isn't distracting.

It's not so bad, though, at least it's exciting. I hate that chintz music during the nauseating "Where [LAME MARKETING ALMOST WNBAish CHEESY AND WIMPY AD CAMPAIGNS] Happen" ads.

does anyone know where I can find a list of sounds like Carmina Burana? Corny as it is I'd like to more easily find the stuff and listen to it when I like.

It's really "epic" and gets me pumped

Interesting video on Youtube about the making of these commercials. Looks like Ray Ray filmed one too.

The piece as a whole is by Carl Orff, and the specific part that is always played is called "O Fortuna." It's the first and the last movement of the piece, just to help you find that.

As for music similar to "O Fortuna," I always thought that "Night On Bald Mountain" by Modest Mussorgsky was pretty damn epic, though it's another "cliche" piece (see: Fantasia).

And Dwestside, I agree completely about the overuse of "O Fortuna," but in the context of that KG commercial, I'm willing to forgive the "creative" marketing execs who greenlighted that one.
