OT: Flopping

Post#1 » by celtics792244 » Fri May 2, 2008 1:03 am

The NBA needs to REALLY need to address this problem this off season. Digusting.... Absolutely hate it and cringe when Posey and Cassell pull some of this BS. Absolutely go mad when it is done AGAINST the C's.

However, to refrain from being considered a homer, I will refer to the San Antonio/ Phoenix series. That series was ridiculous. Every possession, EVERY @#$%-ING POSSESSION, a player on either team, (most times on BOTH teams) would fall on their @#%. It was ... lost for words... to watch. Dam shame because Ginobli would actually be a pretty fun player to watch if he put an end to that crap.

What can the league do about this? Gesture type fines? Tech's during game? I don't know, but it needs to be addressed. As a fan and investing the time, energy, and cash ....to lose a game or a series because of a %$#@ play would turn me away forever.

By the way... those that haven't really paid attention to the league since the 80's... we can't run onto the court anymore after we win the title in June.

it's a lot easier to spot than people make it out. if i can see someone obviously flop on TV... and can't even hear or feel the contact occuring from that distance... im sure a ref standing 10 feet from it knows whats up. they aren't THAT senile.

heinsohn certainly sees it, and he's drunk half the time .

I agree whole-heartedly. One of the things that keeps me from enjoying soccer is when these guys are rolling on the ground, acting like they've just been shivved in the kidney. Then they haul out the stretcher to cart them off the field, but two minutes later they're back in like nothing happened. It just makes me sick.

Flopping in the NBA is almost as bad. If a player deserves a foul that's one thing, but trying to get another guy in trouble by flopping is dishonest at best.

Is it any coincidence it's the wimpy-ass Europeans in the NBA who have brought the "art" of flopping to the league?
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

Precedent has been set. Really all the NBA needs to do is effect the same kind of rule.

I'm all for some sort of no flopping rule. I don't think there is any way you can let refs call T's for it. NBA refs already have a tough job, which many of them are brutal at, and asking them to differentiate between a flop and a no flop is going to be over their heads.

Considering the league spends hours on end reviewing videos of every little altercation to see if people should be suspended, I would think they could do the same for flopping. Just review all the tapes after the games and if a guy is flopping, which is pretty obvious on video, then fine him. Additionally, they could have some sort of flopping points system, whereby say every third flop they find you doing would lead to a 1 game suspension. Ginobili would only get to play maybe 50 games a season.

Here are some of the floppers that I've seen:

The 'F' List floppers
---------------------
Manu Ginobli (The flopmeister supreme)
Devin Harris
Raja Bell (plays on his heels to enhance teetering)
Anderson Varejao (Long hair adds to the effect)
Andrew Bogut
Robert Horry
Bruce Bowen
Sam Cassell
Dwayne Wade (best at offense flop with ball)
Derek Fisher
Richard Hamilton
Andres Nocioni (Falls down doing pre-game chest bumps)
Reggie Evans (when not grabbing for handholds)
Shane Battier
Fabricio Oberto

Famed Floppers
------------------
Vlade Divac (had permanent purple floor paint on white home uniform)
Reggie Miller (flopped all the way into the stands)
Dennis Rodman (at least pulled you down with him)
Bill Laimbeer
John Stockton (would even bounce a time or two before the slide)
Danny Ainge (great facial expressions)
Karl Malone
Jerry Sloan (Maybe the best of all time with Divac and Ginobli)

Most prone to flop:

1. You were born in Argentina or Brazil
2. You played for Jerry Sloan
3. You wear a San Antonio uniform
4. You were one of the Detroit 'Bad Boys'
5. You went to Duke

Speaking of rushing the court if/when we win it all. I was just talking to my boys about this very subject the other day. Why can't we rush the court? Will everyone get arrested?

^Don't forget Kurt Thomas^

He's a huge flopper, and it's really annoying. You could even tally him up under the "You wear a San Antonio uniform" category.

Flopping is an art... If you can get away with it, why not?

Derek Fisher I think tops this list... it's more difficult I believe for a small dude to pull-out flops, which makes his more impressive

The sad thing for me is how much Tim Duncan flops in recent years. He's better than that...he doesn't need to. Plus now the whole team does the "Duncan Face" when they disagree with a call, which, as my brother classically pointed out, looks like a chimp staring down headlights!

Ginobli should have a uniform with a big target on the chest, saying insert shoulder here, and a smily face on his rear that shows when his legs fly up. San Antonio is almost unwatchable sometimes. Kendrick Perkins has the best scowl I've seen when he gets a foul he feels is unwarranted. It's down right scary.

The sad thing is SA is so talented they don't need all this other ****. But between the sissy-Euro flopping of Manu, Mr. Longoria, and Duncan, and the downright dirty-but-gets-away-with-it Bowen, SA detracts from that.

The league just needs to enact the same rules that soccer has. If you flop and get caught you have a foul called on you. or call it an unsportsman like foul and a free throw and the ball.

I think they should make them wear a "Hello my name is Manu and I'm a flopper" t-shirt. He should enter a 12 step program with steps like:
'I will stand my ground and not fall down' or
'I can take a hit and not throw a fit' or
"Give me back my jock for I no longer flop" or
"Five fake falls and everyone kicks me in the balls" or
"It's not a real sport until my blood's on the court"

To me the way to fix it is to get rid of the implied rule that you have to fall a certain way to get a charge. If one gets a charge but doesn't fall down or do snowman angel style flop they rarely call a charge. You should never be able to try to get a charge. It should be something that just happens.

I would also out law except in extreme cases blocks that arent going toward the basket or involved in pick in rolls. I can stand when a player randomly jumps in front of a ballhandler or someone cutting through the lane to get open that isn't even moving toward a basket

Are you kidding me? Every other time I turn on soccer over here (Japan) there's some guy laying on the ground writhing like his leg's broken. They haul out the stretchers like they're evacuating him from Normandy Beach, but then he's back in the game 2 minutes later.

As for flopping being an art, I'm sure the same could be said for other forms of cheating as well. It's dishonest, weak and pathetic. Beat them with the ball or don't play ball at all.
