NBA Players' Union Upset About Access In Boston

The NBA players union plans to file a complaint after an official was denied access to the Boston Celtics locker room ahead of Game 2 on Thursday night, Marc Stein from ESPN.com is reporting.

Union spokesman Dan Wasserman said the union was initially told that no one from the organization would be allowed in the Celtics' locker room. After calls of protest were made to the Celtics and to the league office, the team agreed to allow union director Billy Hunter into the locker room prior to tip-off.

Another union official, attorney Hal Biagas, was told he could have access to the locker room after the game, but not before.

"The Celtics are the only team in the league that believes they have the right to keep union personnel from the locker room, and as a result we're filing a complaint with the NLRB," Wasserman said, explaining that a basic tenet of labor law calls for union representatives to have access to employees inside the workplace. Now I am pro union to the max, but do they really need to talk to the players before a HUGE game? This just sounds like Hunter wanted to use his power to see star players. Plus it is not like these players are playing in in horriable conditions or are being underpaid. Maybe he wanted to F wit our players to help out the NBA's boy LBJ

i hate the **** players union. its offensive to real unions. when you make over a million dollars you have no right to complain.

How can you not hate the players union?!? A player can be a drunk, a junkie, 10x overweight, lazy and a team still can`t just fire his ****. We had to pay Gin Baker when the guy was an alcoholic and unable to play.

And why would the union representatives want into our locker room before an important match? Keep these leeches out!

That's only cos we're the Celtics. The Heat were allowed to rub Alonzo Mourning's salary from their cap due to his kidney ailment (from which he subsequently recovered and went back to playing for them). We also got "special treatment" from the league regarding Len Bias and Reggie Lewis, very different from Minny with Malik Sealy and New Jersey with Drazen Petrovic. It's well documented, so I won't get into it.

But this doesn't surprise me. Good for the C's...they want some **** privacy to be men and contemplate the battle before it starts...leave them the hell alone, union!

Agreed. This story is such a non-starter for the union. The players are trying to get ready to do their job...and they need union members to be able to just waltz right in?

This is similar to the brouhaha in Chicago over the blow-up dolls in the White Sox clubhouse. Remember when the locker room/clubhouse used to be PLAYERS ONLY!? Political Correctness is ruining that...

Why would you be PRO union. They have lost their use in the work place over 30 years ago. All unions actually do now is hold down the current employees. Granted some places they are still needed but ,97% of the time they are just their to keep the unions higher ups jobs. It is exactly what is forcing so many jobs overseas also. People,being companies, don't want to deal with the headaches of the unions. Allowing the companies to make the decison to leave. Then what does the union worker have? No job at all by estimation.

Sometimes these guys will stir things up just to give their membership the false impression that they're not just sitting around collecting union dues. I pay about $40/month in union dues. Just imagine how much these guys must be making off each NBA paycheque.

Why do they need to be in the locker room anyways? Did Eddie House or Tony Allen file some sort of grievance against Doc Rivers for not getting enough playing time? I'd love to know what business it is of theirs to be in the locker room.

The only way this would be a story is if the C's players wanted the Union in there, but the mgmt said no. tho i can't imagine why the players would be clamoring to see billy hunter just before a big game. this seems like a lot of union posturing.

I agree, man, unions suck bad. My wife was a teacher and refused to join the teacher's union because it's one of the worst in the country, yet by law she STILL had to pay dues....**** unions!

Because we(the workers) are now being taken advantage of GREATLY by corporate america. It's a class war bro! That is another reason among many I HATE Ronald Reagan, he broke the air trafic controlers union.

They only suck because people are not united they give in to companies. People just hand over their sovernty to big buisness.

Yeah for that reason I love Ronald Reagan. I have yet to see people consistently be taken advantage of in the USA by their employer. I just don't see it happening. If anything people expect to much out of their employer.

Such as the state of MA, wants to pass a law allowing for 7 paid sick days a year. Now it has worked fine the way it is for the past 100 years what is the need to change it? there is none. So unions are the root of the me first mentality that so many people have nowadays.
