Max on 850

Back when I was young and had to walk barefoot to school, uphill both ways, we used to listen to Johnny Most on the radio and turned the sound down on the TV.

Well a few of the nationally televised games were a bit much for me, during the regular season and I started listening to the radio. There is a visual delay, so it is kind of starnge. I've gotten used to it.

The nice thing about this is Max knows his stuff. One game was close and Ray came in with a couple minutes left. At one point Max said the play here is to go to Ray, he's fresh and he'll make the shot. Sure enough they went to Ray and he made the shot. We won.

The really sweet thing was you could watch the play as if you had been in the huddle. I almost think Max has a better read on this team than Tommy. He's at least as good.

Anyways, I'm probably going to listen to Max when the national broadcast takes over.

Two things LTF. You could not be more right on Max. I have been a fan of Tommy's and I defend him but to be honest I would love to see Max do the TV. This Saturday Gorman is going to do the radio with Grande. I wonder if they are thinking about putting Max and Grande on TV and Gorman either solo, ala Johnny Most, or with Marshall on the radio, with Tommy hanging it up or doing the studio.

The other is that they sell a device that will link up the sound on the radio with the TV. It is like 20 bucks and you can get it at Dick's sporting goods I believe.

I agree with you guys, Tommy and Mike are great but so is Max. When I'm in the car I always listen to the games with Grande and Max.

Not the Johnny Most I remember from my childhood, but not a huge drop-off either.

I guess I'm in the minority here ... I really don't like Max at all. He's one of those guys that has this sort of "vamping" commentary that's always unbelievably obvious, almost Maddenesque. He'd be perfect for a video game, making generic comments that provoke little or no thought. Plus it's hard to take him seriously after saying Dirk is a better player than Bird, but that's really at the bottom of the pile for reasons I don't like him.

I LOVE Grande though. He has perfect phrasing and cadence, ridiculous statistics, an extremely quick wit and I really like his 'epic' game intros.

I'm a big Max fan because he knows the game and calls it as he sees it--even though I really don't like his 'quack quacking', other sound effects and generally inane style of conveying emphasis.
