you, who said that it was Ray Allen's fault that Joe Johnson went for 20 in that stretch. You who said that Doc should have switched someone else on him.

I know, seriously, what a concept.
Next thing you know someone will say the same thing about that LeBron fellow!

It's still 17 to 11!!!!

well, if you put it that way, Danny didn't have to say anything in the first place.
So perhaps, some people's egos just can't handle the reality of the situation. So it's nice to stick with their simple mental pictures of situations
but don't worry, it's not just most fans. Danny points out, it's the media too. And I couldn't agree more. ESPN's assessment of the Atlanta series was some of the silliest stuff we've seen from them. And their talking points for the Cavs series add nothing. Don't get me wrong. I don't claim to have any good understanding. But I understand that this sense that most Boston fans have of knowing exactly what the issue is, and knowing how bad Doc Rivers is, is just ridiculous.

I think what people wanted is for a more physically talented defender to make rotations mistakes so that he might still recover. When Ray is beat he might as well be knee deep in quicksand.
well thanks for clearing that up.. but I think I had some idea of people's objections there.
seems Danny's point is the same as KG's.. this isn't 5 on 5. This is team defense. Doc's not changing anything because this is what they've done all year long. If there weren't all the defensive lapses or mistakes that Ainge alludes to, Ray on JJ wouldn't have been a problem

I agree here. It had nothing to do with Ray. He just couldn't stay in front of JJ. It's Doc that should have recognized that and perhaps put a quicker defender like TA on him. Why not at least try it when the guy's torching you?

When a 66 win team fritters away a 10 point lead in a playoff game after establishing itself as best defensive team and best road team in NBA it is worrisome. When it happens to a 37 win team - easily the worst to make the playoffs it is extremely worrisome. When adjustments, time outs etc. only occur after the lead has been erased rather when it should have been obvious earlier...... it is fair ground to criticize.
Clearly the team is back to playing well. But look how close it came. If Atlanta showed up for game 7 and KG rather than Chauncey Billups pulled a hamstring this wonderful season might be over.
There is no excuse that a game 7 happened between Atlanta and Boston. None. That said, we can move on and get back to Celtics basketball and hope that no other series this year will require in game coaching to ensure victory.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Ray is a space-filler on defense. Like Wally, he makes good decisions. Like Wally, he's slowish (but not nearly THAT slow). Unlike Wally, he can also jump when the situation calls for it.
Larry Bird made the 2nd defense team with a similar collection of strengths and weaknesses. Ray will never achieve that, but he's also not a guy you bench for his defensive shortcomings. You just scheme around him.

How about this, if Tony Allen never gets that thigh injury and as such never lost the confidence that he had been building in the health of his knee/leg he'd have played better basketball and would've obviously retained a bigger role down the stretch of the season.
When Tony Allen is healthy, assertive and confident in his knee he might be a better player than Ray Allen at this point of their careers.
Thing is that thigh injury did derail Tony Allen's season and forced Doc Rivers to remove him from the regular rotation come playoff time.
I'm sorry but if anything you can argue that Doc Rivers stood behind Tony Allen longer then perhaps any coach in the league would've last season and it paid off.
He again stuck with him as long as he could possibly be expected to this year but Tony Allen never truely was able to work through his knee issues.
I hope they do bring him back next year being that it took him into the second year to truely trust his knee last time i'm hopeful for him going forward but it wasn't happening this year.
If he comes back I believe we'll see the Tony Allen of December and January again.

...exactly...
When the team wins 4 games in blowout fashion and loses 3 close games on the road-that's the players not executing...
I mean, how dense do you have to be to not simply put one and one together...the team played 82 games using the same offense and defense to get to where they are...Do you really think Doc changed things in all 3 playoff losses and went back to the right stuff in the wins...
...its the players who have been mis-firing, not Doc...
