never mistake activity for achievement

i thought this was a really good piece. it compares to kg to duncan and argues that garnett is not a franchise player

here's the conclusion:

Never mistake activity for achievement...While Garnett does more things than Tim Duncan, and perhaps more than any other big in the history of the game, Garnett does not have one aspect of his game, other than rebounding, that would be considered HOF material. So although Tim Duncan can't initiate an offense, shoot threes, or take his man off the dribble, the things he can do he is usually the best in the league at. As was the case with most franchise players.

As another mark of true greatness, Duncan has lead three vastly different teams to NBA championships and maintained a level of greatness within the Spurs organization.

So where does that leave us with KG? Well, his skill set reminds me of another great player who will be a Hall of Famer and is one of the 50 greatest of all-time. Scottie Pippen. While we can all appreciate the greatness of Pippen, we all acknowledge that teams were not build around them. Garnett is simply a souped up, seven foot tall of Pippen. So what would KG's ideal legacy be? Why, the greatest sidekick of all time, of course. A combination of Pippen, Michael Cooper, and Dennis Rodman all rolled into one. Unfortunately, we've spent so much time looking for his sidekick, we never thought to find a Michael Jordan he could play his Scottie Pippen to.

I really think this is good, sober analysis.

personally, defined what really pisses me off about KG as commodity. He gets so much attention and credit but he just isn't a superstar. he's really good but he's not dominant. he's isn't someone you can build a team around. KG himself basically owned up to this when he said pierce was the team MVP. his fundamental nature as a supporting player is why the t-wolves always failed. that and the fact that garnett's ridiculous salary crippled them, almost 24 mil this year alone. a small market like minnesota could not afford winning team with super-pip at the price. he makes almost half of the salary cap!!!!!!

Absurd analysis.

KG is a franchise player because he is 7 feet tall. If he was a PG then I might agree. But if the only guy you can point to as being better is the best PF to ever play the game, then the argument is weak.

Yes, Duncan has been a better player. But Duncan's first team had David Robinson on it - a franchise center himself. Garnett has only had a comparible team twice - his MVP season and this year. No other season has he had a legitimate team around him.

And Duncan has never had a team around him as crappy as KG or PP has had so to credit him as being special because he always wins isn't really fair. See how good Duncan's teams would be if he had 3 late 1st round draft picks instead of Bowen, Manu and Parker starting alongside him.

KG does have one major flaw as a player. He is very tall and very thin and yet his only true go to moves are in the post where he can be pushed around. Although he has remarkable ability to drive and shoot for a big man, his drive is not a premier class " GO TO" move.

So if there are 5 seconds left and you give the ball to Garnett.... what does he do? He usually passes. Whereas Kobe, Lebron, MJ, and even Duncan can beat a triple team and have to be respected so that if they decide to pass there is usually somebody wide open. In that same situation, KG cannot carry the team on his back.

On the other hand, if you are up by 5 seconds and need a stop..... I want KG first.

JEEZUM!!! :banghead:

pitino said it best...the negativity in this town DOES suck.

when did pippen ever lead any team he ever played for without MJ to 66 wins? he DIDN'T.

inaccurate...VERY innacurate analogy. anybody who has watched him play all season long would know this. he is the best player on the best team in the league. he is defensive player of the year, and most rightfully so. he ALWAYS shows up to play, and he does everything well.

why don't you give bill russell that little read, and see what he has to say about it?

Agreed. At least it makes it easy to separate the real fans from the reactionary/self-loathing/fairweather fans.

We get it already. You keep on posting **** like this about KG yet still complain about him not taking over games and being the man. If you truly believe this about KG, then why expect differently from him?

becuase, the national sports media and lot of posters here, give him all credit for the celtics turnaround. if the celtics win it all this year, pierce will have saved kg as much as kg saved the celtics.

i just think he's overrated and the way his image is marketed (and the way some fans reproduce that bs in their opinions) makes me want to puke.

Agreed, I dont know how someone cant think KG is the main reason for this years turnaround? I mean if not KG is it the hotdog vendor in section 311?

KG has already said as much and alludes to Pierce as his MVP.

OTOH, Pierce hasn't shown his "savior" mode as of yet since the playoffs began. :-?

A combination of Pippen, Michael Cooper, and Dennis Rodman all rolled into one.

This sentence alone make him a frachise player...

Pippen almost lead a team to the NBA title, he was the superstar on Portland and just doesn't won the NBA title for all the headcases they got on their team, although talented, they was head cases.

Sheed
Steve Smith
Stoudamire
Sabonis
Wells

They lost 4-3 from the Kobe-Shaq Lakers

How about we wait to 'til we get knocked out of the playoffs to start knocking KG?

Even then it won't be his fault...he's the only one who brings the effort 100% EVERY game.

Pierce hasn't been lighting it up this postseason, people...

I agree, but at least then, you can make a better argument that KG isn't a franchise player. If he leads us to a title and wins the Finals MVP award, I don't think the argument can have any validity.

Just a question, last year we got:

Wally
West
Green
AJ
Allan Ray
Ryan Gomez

The trade was

Wally (who multiple fans say is equal to Ray Allen if healthy)
West (a much better back up than House and a much better shooter than Rond)

For RAY ALLEN(that's a downgrade if wally stays healthy)

Green (basically nothing)
AJ(who got similar numbers to KG)
Ryan Gomez(a solid contributor)

for KG (not a frachise player)

Allan Ray(a shooter, a fine shooter) is gone...

What i what to say is, if Ray is an ovverrated guy who's value is similar to Wally and KG is not a franchise player HOW WE WON 42 more games than last year?

Maybe Posey or Cassel are our franchise players...
