RealGM's Playoff Player Rankings

Post#1 » by Jammer » Fri May 16, 2008 11:52 pm

RealGM Executive Editor Andrew Perna has devised a measure of valuing a player's overall contributions which he calls Floor Impact Counter.

Andrew further compares a player's performance to his salary to determine whose is over/underpaid.

His method is a variation of my own Jammer Index, which I thought of back in 1978, and the 2001 version would up becoming the NBA Efficiency rating on NBA.com.

It's all very similar to the Bird Index that was popularized in the 1980's for gauging the League MVP.

Anyway, here's the link to his ranking (page 3, players 101-150)

To save you the trouble of searching for Celtics, I've extracted them:

RealGM's Playoff Celtic Player Rankings:

002. Kevin Garnett (right where he was NET PER wise in the regular season)
014. Rajon Rondo (most underpaid guy in the NBA)
021. Paul Pierce (during the season his NET PER was typically 11th)
029. Ray Allen (Surprise, about the same as his regular season NET PER)
034. Kendrick Perkins
041. James Posey
095. Leon Powe
106. Sam Cassell
125. PJ Brown
128. Glen Davis
152. Eddie House
158. Tony Allen

Now, the surprises are several.

First, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are way off, and if they don't play like they're capable of, the Celtics are in trouble.

Second, the Celtics are still in the game because KG is playing like an MVP; and Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins and James Posey have stepped up, especially Rajon Rondo, who it could be argued in the playoffs comprises the Big Two when teamed with Kevin Garnett (no sarcasm please, from Pierce devotees, it's just an analogy).

The Big problem for the Celtics is the gap after their top 6 players
(KG, Rondo, Pierce, Ray Ray, Perk & Posey).

During the regular season, Eddie House was the 7th man, Tony Allen the 8th man,
and Leon Powe the 9th man.

That order was changed with the arrival of Sam Cassell, and the Celtics are not getting anything out of their 7th or 8th men.

Leon Powe (7th man) and Cassell (8th man) need to do more, even though the Celtics biggest need is for Paul Pierce and Ray Ray to play like they are capable.
