Just saw Tommy on Mike and Mike and he talked about how terrible the refs are in the playoffs. Mike and Mike neglected to respond. Glad to see some one in the media wants to call out the refs, they were terrible in ALL series. but mainly the Bos/Cle and Det/Orl series.

I'm sure ESPN will then make sure to make fun of Tommy as a homer and a old-man nutjob. No one outside of New England under 35 years of age knows he is a HOF player, won 2 championships as a coach, and has been doing the C's games on TV for almost 30 years. They guy's left nut knows more basketball than everyone combined on those ridiculous ESPN NBA shows.

do they replay that on espn.com? cuz i'd love to hear that

He definitely is a homer and NO ONE, not one celtics fan can say otherwise. BUT he is 100% correct about the refs. He's good for basketball, but ya I'm sure he'll have a phone call from Stern saying he needs to shut up or he will be shut down.

you can look on mikeandmikes website. if its not there yet it will be there later. and at 12 or 1pm est they usually reair the show on espn and typically just replay the days guests (cuz its a shortened version). So good chance of that too.

I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't admit Tommy is a homer. That's what many of us love and consequently hate about him. As far as a phone call from Stern, I'm not sure what he could do to Tommy. Tommy is a member of the media so he can say whatever he wants about the league. I'm pretty sure he gets his paycheck from Comcast Sports Network so it's not like he can be fined or anything. Now if he were an employee of the Celtics it might be a different story.

No doubt Tommy is a homer...I am too, although not to that extent.

Has anyone else noticed ESPN's complete lack of acknowledgement of how NBA refs mess up? If there's a blown call in baseball or football, they go on the entire game about it then don't shut up about it for the next week.

One instance, in the blown Pierce charge call in game six, in the highlight they just said there might have been a little movement by Lebron, but oh well, or something like that. I'm just glad the game was airing on CSN, because I could not stand for listening to ESPN talking how great of a charge that was that Lebron took (I'm just assuming they said that, of course, really don't know).

^^You're lucky. I spent the first 26 years of my life in the Boston area but the last 1 1/2 yrs I've been in the South and I can ONLY watch the C's on TNT or ESPN.

To take this even further, I noticed that ABC didn't show any replays of questionable calls during the Game 7 broadcast. I guess the NBA feels that their officiating is under enough scrutiny, so maybe Mr. Stern told them not to air any blown calls.

^Could be...some of the blatantly blown calls got free passes, and when Van Gundy was arguing whether they should have called some flagrants in game 7 and Mike Breen was shushing him up.

I totally noticed that too...I remember waiting to see a replay of a horrible call or two and the ABC broadcast never showed them.

Van Gundy is on ESPN and he calls out the Refs ALL the time. Other than that I agree.

agreed 100% with the comments about other media. and that was my point about Tommy and the Stern call. It was of course a joke, but what was meant by it was how rigged the basketball world is. Donaghy says that refs, coaches and players are all in on it. All Stern's office can say is its a plea from a criminal. He has nothing else to lose than to tell the truth. He's been caught. But JFG (ABC) is the ONLY media source on the big 3 networks that really calls things the way they are. And he prolly won't have a job some how or another next year in the media buz.

And how many times do they do that then after it's replayed at the game, they say 'oh, it looks like the crowd saw the replay and didn't like it' or something along those lines? If the crowd was that interested in the replay to act like that, don't you think those watching your broadcast would too, ABC?

The thing is, there is so much that you can do to be "in on it" that isn't really that bad.

Say, for instance, you are Gabe Pruitt. You walk into the trainers room looking for the i-Pod nano you lost, and what do you see but Paul Pierce in agonizing pain on the trainers table.

Boom, Pruitt calls his boys back in Southern California... "Man this sucks, P looks hurt to me, I hope he can play!"

His boys, always thinking, rush out to the casino and drop 10K each on the Pistons. Has Pruitt done a single thing to make the Celts lose? No. But has he helped people make money, and gotten somewhat involved? Yes.

I do think that all sorts of players, trainers, coaches, refs are in on it to some extent. I just don't think that extent is literally throwing games. If I'm not mistaken, Donaghy bet a lot of over/unders...which just means that to make his side hit, all he had to do was swallow the whistle, or blow it a ton, depending on the side.
