OT- The NBA plans future flopping fines (say that 3 xs fast)

The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned.
NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson confirmed the new policy Wednesday night saying: "What was clearly expressed to the committee is that we would begin imposing fines next season for the most egregious type of flops. When players are taking a dive, for lack of a better term."
Because a precise penalty system has not yet been structured, it is not yet known whether serial floppers will be subject to possible suspensions after a certain number of fines for flopping, as seen with the league's protocol on technical fouls. Players who accrue 16 technicals during the regular season are hit with a one-game suspension when they get to No. 16 -- the limit is seven technicals during the playoffs -- and receive one-game suspensions for every other technical thereafter (No. 18, 20, etc.)

This may be an unpopular view, but I'm sick of the league trying to micromanage every little element of the game. It'll be interesting to see what the details are, but if officials can call this in-game, this is the stupidest move David Stern has ever made. Officiating in the NBA is broken. Adding MORE nuance to the rules is only going to make it worse for everybody. It creates confused players, coaches, fans, and evidently ... REFS.
Everybody was so happy when the refs didn't call that foul on Fisher because the refs would have determined the outcome of the game ... I'm sorry ... but if Barry went up with the shot immediately after taking the contact, FISHER would have determined the outcome of that game by making an ill-advised foul, not the refs.

I think it needs to be more then a fine, in fact I think fines are out of line.
It needs to be an in game penalty for these kinds of things to directly effect the game, cause god knows anyone would take a fine versus getting the call that wins you an NBA championship.
Fact is, there talking bout flops, were still gonna have to deal with offensive players creating the contact that gets the fouls which in most cases I dont like, (if a player reaches in and you go for your shot to create the contact is prolly the only exception) we'd still have to put up with players crying every time they dont get a call going to the basket, we still have to put up with players getting calls when they shoot the ball, ball is in the air and then the contact on the hand after the shot gets them free points at the line.
In reality, nothing is going to change, except the NBA is gonna take more money from its players and then turn around and try and tell the fan it's doing it's part to keep the game fair and keep the players from becoming actors if you will.

What will Manu do now (lol)? Posey will need to watch out too.

It should just be a technical foul. Two flops and you get thrown out. Or a flop and a normal T.
Just like in soccer/futbol.

The refs are already bad enough imagine with more power given to them.

I agree, I think having more rules just further compounds things.. To go with that, I just want the refs to stop calling charges on calls that could go either way. Only call a charge if it's an absolute, without-a-doubt charge. Without incentive, players will stop flopping given time.

Fines ???? Come on now. That's nothing. What, they are going to fine a flopper a few thousand dollars...guys who are making millions...yeah right...
Like the fella said above, any flopper should be given an automatic technical foul. In soccer when you dive, you'll be given a yellow card sometimes even a red card.

I dont think Posey has too much to worry about. His flops are more like embellishments (like the LeBron flop). Theres actually legitimate contact on most of those flops. I think the NBA is talking more about the incredibly massive flops where the guy takes no actual contact and dives back (Ginobli, Verejao, Ben Wallace vs Shaq, etc).

I love the rule. refs cant seem to not call a foul when someone flops. so now they have to.
flopping is cheating and basketball is way out of control when it comes to cheating. players hitting other players where they shouldnt, terrible flops called as fouls. this will be fun and interesting.

+1. Now if we could only get them to make excessive whining a foul ...

I see nothing wrong with flopping. Referees just need to smarten up. If you think a guy is acting, don't call the foul. Shut your yap. Flopping hurts nobody. CALLING a foul when the guy is acting hurts. How about we fine Refs for being bad referees and calling that crap. Make them accountable and I BET you players stop flopping because they're not getting the call anymore. Problem solved.

Excessive whining should be a tech, but I guess it also depend on the status of the player, which is what really sucks in this league (star calls).
As for giving more power to the refs, I still remember last year when the refs abused another given power (calling T's for arguing with them) and they went crazy calling techs for just looking at them wrong.
Just say no to flopping (lol)!!!

Dumb idea.
What they need to do is train refs to not fall for flops. Fines are stupid.

Depends. If it is like the system with technical fouls -- say a $25,000 fine for each flop, and then a one game suspension if you hit 10 in a year (and one additional game every other flop from there on out) -- then I think this could have a real deterrent effect that puts the refs in a better situation and allows the game to proceed with a better flow.
The other change that I'd love to see is eliminate the circle under the hoop b/c the "in the circle / outside the circle" issue really leads the refs to ignore a lot of important issues related to out of control offensive play and dangerous undercuts on defense...

but everyone, the funny or hard thing is how do they determine whether it is a flop or not if they can't even make a call right nowadays, why don't they just grant the official to get together and review and make a RIGHT call first before any other sanctions. also, LAUGH at Rasheed for so mad about flopping when rip hamilton probably flop more than anyone else (except ginobili)
