How i became a reporter, interviewed Rondo, met the Celtics

Post#1 » by nightstarstolen » Fri Jun 6, 2008 2:25 pm

I work in Waltham, for a software company, that resides on Winter st. The Celtics training facility also happens to be on the same street.

During lunch break at 1pm on Tuesday, i decided to go explore, see if i can meet any Celtics.

I found a room past the food shop on right, that happened to be the Celtics media room, it had memorabilia, a set up for Doc's press conference, and a window through which you could see a private court where the Celtics not 8 ft away were dunking, shooting, working with Clifford Ray, Tom Thibidou.

My heart was pumping, and all the media folk with cameras, and tape recorders started filing into another room. I asked a guy next to me "where are they going?" he said "down to floor". I got in between the crowd, pretending my cell phone was a tape recorder, and made it onto the court.

Some guy asked me what media i was from, i made up some local college newspaper. Despite being very nervous i became a reporter, and Pierce was laughing and talking to KG not 3 ft away.

I carefully walked across the room, and listened to all the interviews, Cassell, Tony Allen, Rondo, Perk all gave interviews.

I asked Rondo question about how key his match up with Fischer would be, and he had the politically correct answer that it would be a team effort.
He talked about how defense wins championships, and how Ubuntu helped there team at certain times in playoffs. I shook Rondo's hand and wished him good luck. I also told him it was going to come down to him against Fischer in play offs, he nodded. Ray Allen looked alot different in person, allot more muscular and toned, than i remembered from tv. Cassell was all smiles as usually joking around.

I was walking backwards once and bumped into perk by mistake, almost knocked me over :D

I watched as Clifford Ray, practiced with Perk and Powe base line jumpers, Perk wen 2-3 most times, while Powe went 3-4 on a regular bases.

House was going around 3 point lane, with 4 white kids passing him the ball. He was nailing 4-5 3 pointers on a regular basis.

They soon left the practice, and went to a private gym next to the courts. I didn't want to seem like a crazy fan, so i didn't go beyond that door. Instead i went and stole some Powerade strawberry shake drinks that the players drink.

I couldn't drive, but walked to parking lot where Celtics were parked, 2 hummer's, one belonged to Pierce i read somewhere, 3 land rovers, all pimped out, one looked like a damn rocket.

I felt almost like i was part of the team, i had the urge to go grab a ball and shoot around with the team, but didn't cause my heart was pumping and i was to scared.

I was in front of some cameras, photos, etc, so heck you might have even seen me on nesn, fsne, espn, etc.

I will always remember this experience. Thought i would share.

Awesome story man! The cell phone disguised as a tape recorder bit was particularly brilliant. You should try to do that again.
