Some Laker-Celtic History

Post#1 » by BigHands » Sat Jun 14, 2008 2:34 am

There is some good basketball history at this link.

To get to the next page just edit the URL so part-1.htm becomes part-2.htm and so on...9 parts in all

http://basketbawful.blogspot.com/2008/0 ... art-1.html

Some examples:

"The Boston Celtics are an old team, tired blood courses through their varicose veins," wrote Sports Illustrated in March 1963 after the Celtics had won 5 of the previous 6 titles. They would win 6 of the next 7.

Here are some YouTube links to some history.

There are 5 videos that cover most of the 4th quarter on game 7 in 1969.

There are not especially thrilling from a Celtic perspective because the Celts lost a big lead and just hung on for the win. Jerry West was smoking hot.

But Russell playing with 5 fouls is interesting as is the fact that Laker coach Butch van Breda Koff was right when he said Mel Counts was playing better than the Wilt Chamberlain he left on the bench (although the Lakers had taken a big bite out of the lead already when Chamberlain went out with a bad knee)

Props to Laker fans that day for giving Sam Jones a standing ovation when he fouled out of his last game as a player.

Very cool stuff all around. I read the "Worst of the Celtics-Lakers" posts on Basketbawful, and they were all fantastic. And the game 7, 1969 vids are great as well. The excellent Celtics Dynasty DVD box set only has that fourth quarter, so these clips are very cool. Thanks to all who posted.

It's so awesome to be witnessing more Celtics-Lakers history. That game 4 will be in future DVD series, book it. And game 1 will deserve attention, too.

“I am picking the Lakers, and it could happen in five, and four would not shock me.” Dr Jack Ramsey, June 4, 2008

Has he had one nice thing to say about the Celtics since his son in law quit?

Ramsay had problems with the C’s long before Jim O’Brien

1967-1968

Dr. Jack was the GM of the 76ers in 1968 when the Celtics came back from being down 3-1 and Wilt went catatonic in the second half of game 7 against the Celtics and took just 2 shots.

1968-1969

The next year Wilt feuded with management and was traded to the Lakers. Alex Hannum, the man who had finally tamed wilt’s ego, also left and Ramsay coached Philly in 68-69.

Finishing second to the Baltimore Bullets, the 76ers were matched against the old, decrepit Celtics who had finished 4th.

Dr. Jack had the pleasure of going down 1-4.

1969-1970

With the Celtic dynasty gone and the immortal Hank Finkle and Jim Barnes playing center Dr. Jack wins a season series against the Celtics 4-2

1970-1971

Dave Cowens is a rookie and Dr. Jack loses the season series to the Green 2-4. He will not win another game against Boston for over 2 years, losing 18 straight games to the Celtics in the process.

1971-1972

Dr. Jack goes 0-6 against the Celtics

1972-1973

Dr. Jack goes 0-7 against the Celtics

1973-1974

Dr. Jack goes 2-5 against the Celtics and are eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual Champion Celtics in 6 games.

1974-1975
The Braves are a good team now and finished 2nd in the east, but the Celtics are still better. Dr. Jack goes 4-5 against the Celtics.

1975-1976

This is another good Buffalo team that falls short of the Celtics. Dr. Jack goes 3-4 against the Celtics and are eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual Champion Celtics in 6 games.

1976-1977 to 1985-1986

Dr Jack is in Portland and manages to break even at 13- 13.

1986-1987 and 1987-1988

Dr Jack is in Indy and goes 1-10 against the Green

Good stuff I think this is what makes the Laker-Celtic rivalry so unique. The war of words, the battles on the court everything that goes with with it is unmatched by no other rivalry in basketball.

I agree ......the Celtics were out of it for so long that I used to worry that the fire would go out....nice to see that has not happened.

from someone who was there, can you describe beauty ? it was om, it was basketball nirvana. russ was and still is the basketball equivalent of buddha. not figuratively, literally. the revisionist history of wilt, who was a beast, as the the greatest player is a disservice to wilt. chamberlain was a great player, no doubt, but, head to head, russ would eat him alive. russ was always in his head. wilt couldn't wait to get to hollywood.

In a way Wilt was almost a dilettante....with all that talent and size, he should have been much much better, not statistically, but as a winner. But he was up against Russell.

It's the way the modern equivalent is Peyton Manning/Tom Brady....

Wilt wimped out of that game 7 in 1969...couldn't stand up to an OLD Russell on the court, and even gut out a knee injury...one that was so "serious" his coach chewed him out after the game and ripped him in the papers since it wasn't as bad as Wilt made it out to be.

I don't mean to pick on a dead guy but Wilt wouldn't even be top 2 in my all-time Centers list, which would be Russell, Kareem, and Wilt, in that order.
It's still 17 to 11!!!!
