OT-Wolves, Grizz agree on Mayo-Love deal

Post#1 » by Mike35 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:19 am

The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded No. 3 pick O.J. Mayo to the Memphis Grizzlies for Kevin Love in an eight-player, late-night blockbuster after the NBA draft concluded.

Yeah this was reported in the draft thread, but ANTOINE to a new team. Ha. Wow.

Not really a fan for either. I like Memphis a little more now though.

God that trade is awful. Mayo could have really helped Big Al...

Poor Al, McHale is doing the same thing to him as he did to KG. Maybe we can get Jefferson back in a couple years in a trade like the KG one

I definitely expect Antoine and/or Jaric to be bought out.

When I saw this on ESPN I thought wow Memphis has a hit a homerun. Memphis got the best player in the deal while Minny got the second and third best players and because of it may be better off next year. But I believe Mayo is better than most people think. Other combo guards his size such as Wade, Baron or Arenas are the type of player I see him becoming.

Memphis has a 1-3 of Conley/Mayo/Gay. All I have to say is wow. If they keep that together for years to come where will they be? Everyone's first response is they don't have a PF. well Iavaorni comes from the D'Antoni school of offense Hakim Warrick is similar to Boris Diaw, Donte Greene can become similar to Tim Thomas - two player who have played PF for D'Antoni. Immediately though Lowry for David Lee or Udonis Haslem popped into my mind and don't sleep on Marc Gasol. I feel like he will be a top 10-15 center in this league.

edit: Reported on the Griz board that they acquired Darrell Arthur and sent away Donte Greene in a 3 team deal, so there is their new PF to go along with Hakim Warrick

McHale is such an idiot. Instead of getting the 3rd best player in the draft they trade for Love who isn't one of the top 6 players in this draft in my opinion (Rose, Beasley, Mayo, Gordon, Bayless, Westbrook). Now Jefferson has to play out of position at C and Love plays PF. Minny will have one of the worst defensive frontcourts in the league now with these two so it should be layups galore for other teams. Minny really needed a star guard in my opinion. Foye, Telfair and Mccants simply aren't going to get it done. Love I don't think will be a star in this league either. He has similar measureables and combine numbers to Sean May and Nick Collison. Love is also unathletic like these two and plays below the rim. I expect Love to never be more then a solid role player type that puts up around 14 and 8 while Mayo is going to be an all star like a Brandon Roy and avg 20ppg for his career.

Mchale has to be the worst gm going at this point.
What a bad move for the Wolves.
Mike Miller will help them, though.

This move makes no sense to me from Memphis' perspective. With Gay/Critt/Conley/and a plethora of SGs who can be acquired easily enough, they needed a good offensive option in the front court, not Mayo...

They do get expiring contracts that could be put to use in the future, but I don't see why they just wouldn't have waited to trade Mike Miller for better value. Mayo for Love is close enough to a swap, and given that they could have almost certainly got better value for Miller IMO.

From Minny's perspective...Mike Miller's three point shooting should complement Al's post game nicely. They already have Rashad McCants as an underrated SG, and Randy Foye as well. And they succeeded in getting rid of both Marko Jaric and Antoine Walker in the same deal. Is Kevin Love the best fit to put alongside Al? Probably not, but I don't see how McHale can be criticized much for this trade.

And it turns out Greg Buckner goes to Memphis as well, this just gets worse for Memphis. They also lose Collins who has an expiring contract, and Cardinal who expires next year.

I guess it makes sense for Memphis if Mayo is going to become a superstar, but Chris Wallace seems to be betting a lot on that (especially since the guy's an underrated - edit I meant undersized - 2 guard when push comes to shove).

Maybe this deal means the Grizzlies and Heat are talking about a potential Mayo for Beasley swap? Looking at the team, I think the Wolves made a solid deal. Brewer/Miller together works. Love/Al together should work on offense, on defense is a questionmark eventhough I think Al improved a lot last year and Love is a decent defender and good rebounder. Foye will be good next year. I saw flashes of his game when he returned from injury. I expect something good next season.
But in the end trading Mayo could really come and haunt the Wolves. Oh well, already many things are haunting the Wolves....

Ouch but at least their new secondary logo is cool. hehe

Walker adds another team he's been on to his resume. I'm sure he loves this. haha

I actually like this trade. People are trashing on Kevin Love, but I think he's going to be an extremely productive post player for them. This means Big Al will have to play center, but he is more than capable of succeeding at that position. Love is a phenomenal post passer that will get Al easy looks because of his ability to play the pick and roll, hit outside shots, and make nice passes down low. Al has yet to have a player of Love's caliber down low.

Miller is not a stud, but he's way better than Buckner and Jaric. He gives much-needed outside shooting. Brian Cardinal sucks but his deal ends quicker than Jaric. Minny also leaves a TON of money open after 09/10 to offer Wade/Bosh/Lebron a max deal, and while they likely won't get any I can't blame them for shooting high.

This makes little sense IMO for the Grizzlies. Toine's deal is a disaster, although I think they can get out from under it at the end of the year. They now have Conley, Lowry, Crittendon, and Mayo as PGs, although Mayo will probably play SG for them, where I think he'll succeed more. He better not try to take over the offense from Rudy Gay though, since IMO Gay is WAYYY better than Mayo. Memphis also now has negative big men. Donte Greene and Hakim Warrick are SFs, not PFs. That team will be guard-dominated and completely in disarray with the logjam at the guard and wing spots. Not a good recipe for success.
