Celtics Hoping To Re Sign Tony Allen

Post#1 » by return2glory » Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:19 am

J.R. Giddens plays for same postion as TA. But this does not mean that he will be replacing Tony. IMO, J.R. will be a very good player for us but so will Tony Allen if he can get healthy. TA finally showed some signs of explosiveness in game 6 of the Finals.

Well, there is good news. The Celtics are hoping to re sign TA. I personally don't want to give up on him yet. I really like TA and hope he can remain a Celtic.

Here is what Doc said:
“No,” said Rivers, “nothing impacts Tony. I mean, we like Tony. We didn’t necessarily draft a guy for position. We drafted a guy that we liked, and we didn’t really care. If it was a point guard that we liked, we would have drafted him. If it was a center. So, no, Tony Allen is very high on our get list. We want to bring him back. I think (they are) different players a little bit. Both very explosive

There is no way Tony Allen returns to Boston after Danny went out and got both J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker.

Doc and Ainge can say what they want, but if they don't make a QO to Tony, then the writing is on the wall. We'll see what happens in the next few days.

Yeah, the odds Tony comes back are slim to none.
Of course Doc won't say he isn't coming back.
Tony is a good locker room guy and a great team mate.
He just won't be a Celtic next season.

Tony Allen is a good veteran with athleticism. Everyone has forgotten his great performance before he went down with another knee injury. With more defensive players, the defense will kill any offensive teams.

I think they are just being polite to TA. I don't believe they want to resign him.

I think there is no or virtually no interest in TA outside the Celtics. We want him back but the QO was too high.

i think he could get a 2yr/4mil deal from someone. just not us. mainly because we are deep at his spot (now), and also we have to pay dollar-for-dollar lux tax. it's not worth it to us but i don't think his value is zero.

Pierce is a king now. You can't tell him what to do. If he wants TA back, there is nothing we can do about it. Ainge is not that dumb.

It isn't about Tony or wanting him back it is about paying him 2.75 mil next year, that isn't going to happen.

I believe that they do resign Tony, and one of House or Posey is going to be gone.

Here we go again. Overrating rookies that haven't done ****. Every year, we have about 25 next-allstars in the draft, yet there are only 24 allstars each year with about 18 spots already locked in.

Until Giddens does something, you can't expect any more from him than a long stint in NBDL. Let's not prematurely put guys drafted low in the rotation just yet.

TA, on the other hand, has proven that he can contribute on this team, so why would a team going for title defense, cut lose a proven player for someone who has yet to play a minute in the league and likely will start the season in the D-League?

Tony Allen barely got any playing time last year. And that was because he didn't deserve it. He couldn't get over the mental hurdle and he couldn't recover from those knee injuries. We might as well give those limited minutes to a player liek Giddens who has a guaranteed contract now with the team and can develop to be a helpful roleplayer as well.

This is a business and we can't sign every young player. Good luck to Tony, hopefully he returns as after his next contract can net a 4mil plus one.

Why don't you go back and see how many 30th picks have become decent NBA players. It's natural for fans to get excited and overrate the draft pick of their favorite team, but the history and probability should tell you otherwise.

Let me give you a list to help you out.

2007 - Petteri Koponen
2006 - Joel Freeland
2005 - David Lee
2004 - David Harrison
2003 - Maciej Lampe
2002 - Roger Mason, Jr.
2001 - Trenton Hassell

On that list, only David Lee and Hassell did anything in the league. That's 2 out of 7. Not a very good percentage.

This is a smart move by the Celtics if they can pull it off -- as I've noted in other threads --

You get backcourt help where you need it to extend minutes for Pierce and Allen. You get a player that Doc played minutes at 1 in the playoffs. You get a player already in synch with your team chemistry. And most importantly, you get depth in the area you need depth in without spending any MLE or Veteran's exception money.

Unless someone out there is giving T.A. an MLE 5-year contract (doubt it) he's a no-brainer to re-sign. Him being a Celtic is the key here -- I would not advise signing him if he were on another team and that meant spending actual F.A. money -- he's our draft pick and we own his Rights which makes him all the more attractive.

Exactly. It costs ownership money, but it costs no usuable cap money (since we have none anyway) or exceptions (which are the scarce cap resource we do have).

The only scarce resource Tony costs is a roster slot, and he's well worth that.

I will say it again,"TA is as important as posey for this team.:" He can play three positions and is a very good defender. TA will be back to full health next year and will be a big part of this team, you can book that. If not, he will be traded for a need position, but his talent is still untapped to its fullest.

TA will either be playing on this team next year or will be used in a trade for a backup center. He is better than Giddons right now and Walker will probably be in the D-league the first half of the season. RA will miss some games and TA will be a necessity. It will take half a year for the rooks to learn the system and earn time.
