“I’d prefer that he was here,” director of basketballl operations Danny Ainge said of Giddens. “But what can you do? We have to see how things work out.

“There’s a lot of unusual circumstances with the Celtics and their salary structure, considering that they’re coming off the championship and things like that,” Mark Bartlestein said. “It’s really complicated. So much is going on, and they’re trying to figure out where they are with the luxury tax, things like that. So we’ll see how it goes.”

What else could all this mean. I am not saying will Won't sign him... just that it isn't a sure thing...

As a First round pick - there is only one contract he can sign. What is to negotiate? What is so complicated- if not the chance we don't sign him???

I think you have to sign first round picks, I'm not sure. I know there's a salary scale, so his agent isn't going to be negotiating a contract. I'm thinking that Bartlestein is using JR as a tool to help Posey get more money since (IIRC) he represents both players.

You do Not Have to sign them. For example - the Euro guys who go in the 1st round, but play over seas for a few more years. Like the Magic's Lotto pick from a few years ago...

With Posey returning and addition of Maggette Danny would rather see JR in Europe for a year...;)

Seriously, Danny has to be extremely creative with the numbers...with KG, Paul and Ray making 25, 18 and 17 million this season we have to be especially careful about our short and long term financial flexibility...

Basiclly there is the flexability of a couple hundred thousand in the rookie scale and the agent is holding out for the max for the 29 pick Danny is saying min or nothing. They would have sold the pick if they werent going to sign him.

You're reading too much into this. It's just because we have 6 free agents. He will be signed by late August.

Bad job bu his agent. Celts may want him adn walker to go overseas too. That would be Danny's preference.Taht won't happen.

Eventually, the Celtics will be forced to release his rights if they refuse to sign him. That won't happen now, but could by early next year.

I don't like how this is turning out to be honest.

Might those "character issues" be bubbling to the surface already?

Maybe they don't want to sign him yet because as of today, he can still be used in a sign and trade, but if they sign him, they won't be able to trade him for a few months, correct? They could just be keeping their options open.

The celtics are not required to sign him. A few years back indiana didn't sign there first round and the guy was actually signed by the celtics. That celtic was greg minor who played for a couple of years here.

Danny wants to sign him though. He would have sold the pick if he wasn't going to sign him. I don't think he wants him to play overseas either, like Walker. The Celtics think Giddens can contribute this year. Could Giddens sign for less than the rookie scale contract allows? Looks like Ainge is trying to get him on the cheap. I wish he would just sign the kid and let him get started in the workouts. :sigh:

How is this a character issue when he is just following the advice of his attorney? His agent is a professional and I'm sure the kid believes his agent is giving him sound advice (whether it really is or not).

If I am not mistaken, the Celtic's traded the right's to our draft pick next year. Now I think the only way we can trade the right's to J.R. Giddens is to get a 1st round draft pick in return.

With that said, his draft right's are owned bye the Celtic's this year and if they can't trade him, I guess he waits until next season when boston looses his draft right's to sign with another team.

Unfortunatly, I don't see Boston acquiring a first round draft choice, from this year or next year, for the rights to J.R. Giddens. Frankly, even if they could I don't believe they would.

IMHO, him to hold-out and not coming into camp was a bad move for him and his agent.

You can trade an unsigned player's rights, just not the pick before it is made.

Giddens is doing the right thing. I saw this on draft night. They are going to treat Giddens like a 2nd round pick. Nobody wanted the pick that is why Ainge didn't move it. The value at that point in the draft was draft and follow Euro's whose situation is really complicated by 1st round contracts. Look around the league everyone is signing their picks before they play in mini camp what happens if he blows out his knee? He isn't playing for a contract he has one unless Boston chooses not to sign him.

Unlike 2nd rounders, who may not even get an invite to camp from someone else, the Celtics have little leverage with a 1st round pick as far asking him to go overseas and with the NBADL there is no point in doing it anyhow unless it is for cash. If he wants to come to camp they have to sign or release him.

But if the Celtics don't have a draft pick next year, wouldn't it be smart to sign this kid and get some more young good talent on the team. I'm just not understanding where Ainge is going with this. I wish he would just sign the kid. Fork up the money, Wyc!

How can Ainge treat him like a 2nd round pick when he's a 1st round pick? Is that legal?

I'll go ahead and guess he'll be signed in mid-August, and won't be in the new NBA games.

As Usual Mr Can is correct you can't trade "picks" 2 years in a row once the pick is made it is a player not a pick any longer you can do whatever you want with that player, sign him, not sign him, trade him, etc.
