More workouts...

Post#1 » by Ed Pinkney » Fri Jul 4, 2008 4:18 am

According to the Herald:

The Celtics also continued to look at other free agents yesterday.

In addition to a visit from former Hornets center Chris Andersen, they worked out three vastly different players - center David Harrison, guard Kirk Snyder and forward Darius Miles.

Patrick O’Bryant, the former Golden State center who the Celtics worked out prior to the 2006 draft, is due in for a workout today.

In addition, the team has taken a prolonged look at former Knicks center Randolph Morris and former Bulls guard Eddie Basden during this week’s rookie/free agent minicamp in Waltham."

Some interesting names there.

Thoughts?

Harrison is a guy I've always liked and I think he'd be a great backup to Perk. He's tough and can score inside.

Darius Miles? There's no way Danny even would consider signing this guy. As for the rest, they look more promising. I liked Randolph Morris when we played the Knicks but he's young and probably won't get much PT

Snyder? Why the hell would we want him. If we are looking at Kirk Snyder, we better be making a move to resign Tony Allen. That dude is horrible. Snyder is a huge downgrade from anyone we had on last year's roster and that includes Pruitt. He was traded by the Rockets for Gerald Green, and then they decided to cut Green days later. That's how much this guy matters to teams in the NBA.

As for Miles doctors have said that he is unable to play professionally, and he has an outstanding 10 game suspension. He has a knee injury, just like Tony, except for in the case of Miles, he'll likely never recover from it. Do we really want to fill up a roster spot with a guy who'll just be on the injury list all year? To top it all off, he has more character issues than any guy in the league. If you thought Telfair was bad, wait until you get a load of Miles. This is the guy who told his coach, "I do not care if the team loses the next 20 games." Real team player that guy, I'm sure he bleeds UBUNTU.

I'm also not very keen on "The Birdman". Why wouldn't the Hornets sign him if he was actually a capable player. It makes no sense to me that he's here. His stats when he was still in the league weren't that great to begin with. It's not like we're getting an all-star who was suspended, he's the guy who took 50 attempts to throw down a single dunk.

Morris, O'Bryant, and Harrison would probably give us very little if anything and all have issues. Here's what I've found out about the guys through Wikipedia.

Here's what Don Nelson said about O'Bryant last year after they brought him back from the D-league. "I told him if he goes down to the D-League and isn't a dominant player, there should be red flags all over the place, and he should be the first to notice. He's not only not dominating, he's not playing very well. He's a long-term project. I really liked him the first week of training camp, but I assumed there would be great progress. ... He hasn't gotten better one bit." I don't think I need to add much more than that.

On to Mr. Harrison. Let's see, involved in the infamous Palace brawl (hit a fan), suspended for going into the Spurs locker room looking for a fight, suspended five games for violating the leagues anti drug policy. Made headlines for saying that he didn't think the NBA or the team had the right to look into his personal life, aside from testing for Performance Enhancing Drugs. Woohoo, sounds like another good teammate.

Randolph is the one guy who might have slight chance at the 3rd string center position. He kinda found his way into the NBA in a roundabout way since he was an undrafted FA. He seems a little bit more intelligent than the other guys, but he's not exactly a tremendous player.

The other guy, Basden is a utility player, who would be used purely for defense. Defensively he's not as good as TA, IMO, and doesn't have the upside that Tony does, or the ability to draw fouls and drive to the hoop.

In the end what I'd say is that NONE of these guys are better than who we had last year, if we sign even one of them, it's going to be a downgrade. We'd be much better off sticking with guys like House and Tony, than trying to bring in other teams' castaway garbage. For the center position, we're not going to find a diamond in the rough, there aren't many decent centers in the NBA, who will play for the minimum. If we want a good guy, we'll have to dip into the pot for him. We'd be better looking at guys who have accomplished something in their career, instead of busts like Harrison and O'Bryant. We need guys who are ready to go out of the gates and understand the NBA game. This may mean going after some retired players, like we did with Posey last year.

Harrison will never be a starter in this league, but he, like Perk, is the type of player that KG excels with, i.e. a huge player that can bang. this has been the case for KG ever since had earvin johnson as a teammate. I am all for anything that will help KG and keep him happy.

P OB is a talented kid. I'd love to let Cliff work with him! Seriously, the guy has some game but just did not fit in with "Nellie Ball." He's big, young, fairly athletic, and has some decent post moves. I think with some burn and some work he could be a solid backup to Perk.

Rocky, who would you rather have? It's not like the NBA has high character players on the FA list, waiting for us to sign them.

Danny has been looking at guys with character issues, because they are cheaper. And usually all that 'character' thing is BS. Look at Tony Allen. He was involved in a shooting. What does that say about him? Now, me and you know that he is a good soldier and a good teammate.

We cannot judge these guys from a distance. Give them a break and trust Ainge.

The reason that it could be hard for us to resign our players is that they all want to much money. Danny is looking out for the Organization. And we cannot dish millions out and lock everyone up forever.

And hell, when House got here last season people weren't impressed. But then they saw him play. I'm sure that will happen with somebody else.

Darius Miles is not the answer.

Rocky. You just hated on everyone we are working out. Who did you expect we were going to sign for the league minimum????

We are looking for guys to play 10 minutes a game. I'd say get the best of Harrison/O'Bryant/Morris/Birdman. Also, if we can't get PJ Brown out of retirement we probably need two of these guys. Perk has been plagued by injury problems, foul trouble, and inconsistancy.

and yes, Kirk Snyder and Darius Miles are both jokes - probably a favor to an agent. We'd be better off playing our rookies. Badsen is ok though.

If they, in fact, land Maggette and lose Posey, I'd hope they sign a defensive wing player to a one year deal so as to not have to rely on a rookie. Also, Maggette is quite injury prone. If it's me, I just resign TA to a one year deal with a team option. But that's dependant upon what other offers he receives of course.

And, while I'm not claiming he's any great shakes, I'd sign Anderson to provide the weak side shotblocking threat when KG sits. You have Perk next to him making the defensive calls and switches. If there's still room for another big man signing, go with a low priced veteran. I'd actually lean towards resigning Pollard since he'd likely be willing to sign on for spot minutes and he has been in the system for a year already.

Ideally, I'd love to sign Mourning rather than Birdman. But, I can't see him signing for vet minimum.

Patrick O'Bryant is intriguing... But, I would pass on Harrison and Miles. Harrison has a temper you could say is worst than Kendrick Perkins. No thanks. And Miles needs no discussion. When I'd read his name, I was thinking I'd read wrong and perhaps there's a rookie with the same name, Darius Miles.

No to ---

O"Bryant - his rep coming out of college was that he didn't really give a **** about basketball. GS took a chance and it didn't work, wasted a high pick. This guy is worse than JBC. Garnett would eat him alive and spit him out. Sort of a lazy man's Candyman.

Harrison - never had much ability other than great size. Absolutely no upside, would be better of with Semih. Was another guy who lacks intensity.

Miles - along with the above 2, they needed NBA guys to fill out 2 rosters. Being paid by insurance.

Yes ---

Chris (I left the birdman in the past) Andersen - absolutely. He can play both the 4 and 5 effectively. He will bring Posey type play and has been a better defensive player than offensive. Will have a great desire to earn his place and re-establish his career. Awesome fast break big.

Randolph Morris - For the minimum, why not. Was a very good college player and has excellent size and athleticism. I suspect he suffers from the same issues that GG and TA do. In college he filled the lanes on the fast break, hit face up jumpers, and had a strong low post game - pretty much what we wish Perk could do. Again, though does he have the motivation to excel, typical issue with big guys.

The rest, thanks for participating.

04-05 BOS 60 3 9.1 0.471 0.000 0.638 0.9 2.1 2.9 0.4 0.2 0.6 0.72 1.60 2.5
07-08 NYK 18 2 10.1 0.362 0.000 0.483 0.7 1.4 2.1 0.1 0.2 0.1 0.50 2.10 3.1

Perk's second year (he really didn't play in his first)... and Morris' first.

If we have a roster spot open... I am all for a 2 year deal, with team option on the 2nd year. Then we can cut him mid-year if there is a Vet we want to pick up.

By the way - who was the big guy we wanted to sign last summer, but got a better deal over seas?

Who did I expect to get? Someone at least as good as the guys we had last year. Bring back House and Tony if this is the best we can do. If we need to, let Big baby be our backup center, because he's better than any of the guys we've brought in so far. There are more PJ Browns out there, and there are vets who will jump teams or come out of retirement for a chance to get a ring. For example, Shawn Kemp has been playing ball and is looking good. I still hold out hope that we'll get someone like PJ who wants a ring to back up the center position. Those types of guys aren't likely to show up at minicamps, but may stop by later in free agency.

maybe miles playing alongside his idol, KG, would help him get his life & career back on track. its well known that miles idolized KG when he entered the league. KG would be all over him if miles was a problem or slacked any.

but lets hope we get posey back or maggette & not have to worry about miles

Rocky, I've been around RealGM for a long time. Coach Mang is the funniest poster I've ever been on a board with.

But you suggesting that the Celtics should look into Shawn Kemp as opposed to David Harrison or Chris Andersen is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever read on this board.

Congratulations. George Carlin may have found his replacement. I literally spit up my water.

Yeah, it be a real riot to bring in a hall of fame player instead of a druggie who can't even finish a dunk when he starts from the other end of the court, or a guy with a 2 foot range who's never even averaged 4 boards. Would you like someone like Spencer Hawes? Kemp schools him in the video from just a couple of weeks ago. http://youtube.com/watch?v=0xZ2zSP0IMI Looks like he's an NBA player to me. You won't get moves like that from Harrison or "The Birdman." A month ago he appeared in a Washington All-star game and had 32 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks. He's the same age as PJ Brown was last year, it's not like I suggested that we should go out and sign Patrick Ewing.

Wait what hall of famer are we bringing in? Cause it sure an hell can't be Shawn Kemp. Kemp is some of the biggest waste of talent I've ever seen. He would have been a hall of fame player, but he snorted it all away. No chance he even gets looked at by the Celtics.

Kemp ate himself out of the league, but judging from that youtube clip, he's back to his old playing weight. With his weight down, he probably has game left. The question would be his character and ability to play a role on this team. His character was always a little suspect, but maybe his time away from the game has given him a new perspective. All in all, he's worth at least a workout. All we need at the back up 5 is someone who can play our defense (jumping the pick and roll, rotation from the weakside, etc..), rebound, catch passes on the baseline and dunk, and hit the occasional jumper for 15 minutes a game or less. Kemp can probably still do that. I'd give him a try out at least.
