If Posey doesn't resign, the Celts sign Maggette, and they're unable to land another "rover" at the 4 spot to cover KG's defensive role, could there be an opening for Brian Scalabrine to carve a niche in the rotation? Not my ideal candidate, but I think there is a threat of this happening. Think about it. Posey was basically handling the rover position when KG was on the bench. Correct me if I'm wrong. Bringing in Maggette would be a huge boost to the offense and give Pierce a breather on the offensive end. Maggette is perfect for the slasher role that Pierce seems to want to pull away from as he gets older and doesn't want to continue taking a pounding.

But, Maggette is a subpar-avergae defender. They're going to need an effective help defender to fill the minutes that Posey was able to give you here. Scalabrine has shown to be effective, on occasion. Powe can't be left to play rover on defense, he still misses a ton of his own assignments, much less being able to call out switches. Baby and Perk don't have the agility to react that fluidly. Chris Anderson, for as many warts as he has, is ideal for this team simply for his athleticism and size on defense. Anderson is the best candidate, IMO, on the free agent market to fill the 14 or more minutes that KG gets to rest on the bench. But, outside of Anderson and Posey, Scalabrine may be the best available option to play the rover on defense. Unless you depend upon Leon. You can't live with Perk or Baby playing help defender, they just compromise too much speed and agility.

So, if you disagree with this observation, feel free to argue against it. To sum up the theory, Maggette is the ideal offensive candidate on the team, but it may cause a sequence of events that would lead to Brian Scalabrine re-entering the rotation. And only Chris Anderson can swoop in and save the day. The enemy is the 14 or so minutes on the floor playing the rover defensive position when KG sits. Or am I making too big a deal of it?

Now I do agree and I think signing Posey should have been the first thing on the agenda this summer. I would give him the MLE over Maggs, and now Posey feels slighted by the whole thing. It is a shame, but perhaps the C's can get creative with trading possibilities. I would think the essential this off-season would be to get a shooter (replace House), a wing defender, and a backup big.

I like Brent Barry a lot and believe he would be sufficient as a backup combo guard and can be a very nice outside shooter for Boston. After him, perhaps Donyell Marshall is not a bad option either. He should be on the cheaper end. As for that defender, perhaps the C's can retain Tony Allen and hopefully instill some faith in him.

Things do look dim if Posey is not kept.

Posey is a better version of Scal.

Posey is 6' 7" w/o shoes, Scal is 6' 8.75 inches w/o shoes.

Posey is a Better defender, with arms nearly down to his knees, able to guard his natural SF,
strong enough to guard PF, and quick enough to guard SG.

Scal is a mobile PF, and if Posey weren't around, a big SF.

Both spread the floor with their Three Point abilities, making it easier for the offense to function.

Posey is a career 35% Three point shooter, coming off a 38% season and 39% playoff Three Point Display.

Scal is a a career 34.7% Three Point shooter coming off a 32.6% season.

Posey is a career 82% free throw shooter, Scal is a career 78% shooter coming off a 75% season.

Posey averages a rebound every 5.6 minutes, and an assist every 16 minutes.
Scal averages a rebound every 6 minutes, and an assist every 14.5 minutes.

Posey had a better than average year from the 3 point line,
Scal had a worse than average year from the 3 point line.

The biggest difference is Posey's ability to guard 3 positions (SF, PF, and SG)
compared to Scal being a mobile PF, and if Posey weren't around, a big SF.

But Posey is better at it than Scal.
Posey is more powerfully built, so he is better at screening players off the boards.

That would be pretty bad, I want Scal OFF this team, but there's no way he's gone until possibly the trading deadline in 2010 when he'll be expiring months later.

Uhh, I personally would not be opposed to see Scal earn some of his money. He is certainly competent in the roles described above, if not good. We signed him to be that kind of role player on a good team, but as soon as we had a good team we pushed him down the depth chart.

He can play the intelligent defensive role player, just not as well and not as shut down as Posey.

I prefer to have Posey back, but Posey wants a pay day it seems, and frankly, it would hamstring the team.

I question the rationale of those who want to pay Posey what the Celtics may be offering Maggette. Thats big time homerism to me. No, Maggs can't quite fill the defensive shoes of Posey, but it isn't like Posey is close to the overall basketball player Maggette is. He is not. Posey wouldn't score twenty points on a regular basis even if he had the minutes, and Posey would be a step down from Allen or Pierce if he had to start more than agame or two. Maggette off the bench would be a guy who could step in and almost replicate what two of our Big 3 can do. And with the defensive atmosphere here, it is hard for me to believe he wouldn't apply his phenomenal physical abilities better on the defensive end than ever before.

I agree with you wholeheartedly but it looks like we're stuck with his ass until he expires...his contract, that is (hmmm??? )
