So where's the Thibodeau topic?

Post#1 » by SuperDeluxe » Sat Jul 5, 2008 1:49 am

I'm surprised we are not discussing the continuity of Tom Thibodeau as part of the coaching staff of this team. Wasn't he supposed to be pursued by quite a few teams to become a head coach? (I know there was mention of Chicago and New York, teams that have already named new coaches.)

So what gives? Why is this not a topic of discussion? And more importantly: why on earth is the press not covering this?

That was a little bonus of winning the championship this year, teams took care of their head coaching needs before we were done playing.

I think Thibs is playing this like a free agent. If the team plays great defense again next year Thibs would get a heavier pay offer next year to be a head coach somewhere.

Tibbs is a keeper. He should get a nice, big, long contract to keep him in bean town for a while

Tibbs can get a NBA coach anytime with his resume now. But the chance to repeat is not always available. I believe he will stay.

I'm taking it as a "No news is good news," kind of a thing. Maybe we can keep winning championships so other teams fill vacancies before Thibs is available?

Also, he clearly had an experience where he decided just any head coaching position wasn't a good idea. I don't think he makes the move again until a good opportunity presents itself, which may be as early as next year, but I don't think he passes on it when it does.

This is a good point.

Bill Fitch was head coach for 25 years. Other than is 4 year Celtic run he was over .500 just twice, going 43-39 in consecutive years with Cleveland.

That is a lot of heart burn.

Maybe Danny, Doc and Thibs have it all planned out. Doc coaches one or two more years and moves upstairs with Danny or gets a huge payday to go back to broadcasting & Thibs gets the head job for the greatest franchise in basketball history.

Do we know for a fact what's going on with Thibodeau? I'd go as far as saying that he's the key free agent for the Celtics this offseason.

Not Exactly,

If its a priority for Thibs to be a head coach ASAP. He could be better off joining a team that isnt poised for a long playoff run. So that way he is available when all the coaching positions open up next year.

I'd give TT any amount of money he wants. His defensive schemes are one of the key reasons why we won #17!

Although assistant coaches can make as low as $150K to $300k (emphasis on the lower),

Tom Thibodeau, as Associate Head Coach, I think came in for around $800k last summer.

Doc Rivers, as Head Coach, makes like $5 million.

One thing that is true around the league is that

Head Coaches typically make more than GM's.

Some teams, like Minnesota, separate the roles,
where Kevin McHale has been President of Basketball Operations at $1 million per year for forever,
and Jim Stack serves as GM, or the "CBA" guy. Stack does a lot of the actual talking to teams, at least preliminarily. Fred Hoiberg serves as Assistant GM at an even lesser salary.

So, I think Thibs is doing OK for an Associate Head Coach. He'll probably get a nice raise from Danny.

IMO, if Tibbs is willing to look at head coaching positions, someone(s) in the Suns organization should be fired for naming a new head coach before even interviewing the guy. He would have been a perfect fit there IMO.

Anyways, we don't pay lux tax on his salary, so...
