Who do you want as Posey replacement?

With Posey out who are some of the players who could replace him on this team? I don`t think we are going to be spending our full MLE, so what are our cheap alternatives?

Tony Allen is a possibility but I would like to sign someone who can guard the big SF`s and quick PF`s.

Who is available? Miles, Barnes, Patterson...

Tony Allen & Gomes. Offer Gomes 3 or 4 year deal at MLE and make Minny match it.

I like Matt Barnes, and House, Lue or Arroyo as backup PG.

TA's an outside possibility if he'll sign for dirt cheap, but his lack of smarts makes him a real wild card. He still could be a steal for dirt cheap though. He's a fine defender at the 2 spot though, but he's undersized at the 3. I prefer a guy with legit size to play the 3.

in order of preference

1. childress (SF)
2. Tony Allen (SG)
3. kristic (PF)
4. Kurt Thomas (PF/C)
5. chris anderson (PF/C)

if we sign a decent big, i would look to move baby for a 2nd round pick or a project wingman or pg

Anyone but Darius Miles, please. This guy is an airhead who should be wanted for larceny because he has stolen an NBA paycheck for the last eight or so years.

Matt Barnes would be fine. He doesn't have the championship pedigree that Posey has, but he is that kind of player. I also like Childress; he's young and he is a wonderful energy player. Probably not worth the full MLE, but I don't think Atlanta will match an offer that's good enough because of their messed up ownership, especially if they have to break the bank to keep Josh Smith (I don't think they can keep both).

I wouldn't mind bringing back Ryan Gomes either. Of all the guys the Celtics gave up to get Garnett, he was the only one I was even a little bit sorry to see go (Al Jefferson's a decent player who can't play defense). One of the few bright spots on the 2006-07 Celtics. Do it Danny.

Quintin Ross is another name but he is only 6-6. Then there are guys like Bonzi Wells, Snyder, Nachbar, Fred Jones, Evans, Devin Brown and Devean George. I actually think George would be a decent pick up. He can hit the three and has three rings with LA...

2. Ross
3. Evans
4. Wells
5. Snyder
6. Miles

Bring back Tony Allen at cheap money using his Bird rights. Split MLE between Jannero Pargo and Matt Barnes.

For all or most of the MLE:
Childress, Dooling?
For some of the MLE:
Pargo, Kurt Thomas?
For a little bit of the MLE or vet min:
S. Stoudamire, House, Lue, J. Dixon, Ivey
Q. Ross, M. Barnes, K. Azubuike, M. Finley?

I say ricky davis, some scoring off the bench. may not cost too much. too many times last year we had no scoring when the second unit played with one of the big 3. this was mentioned many times on broadcasts when the announcer would say "i dont like this offensive unit for boston right now". this way KG and ricky could play together with paul and ray resting, or many other combos.

Assuming the team signs the draft picks, that would give us 12 players under contract. So 3 roster spots left.

1. Ryan Gomes-- what can I say? I always thought he'd be back.

or:
Matt Barnes-- I like his energy, and closer to Posey in style than Gomes is.

2. Chris Andersen-- another irrational choice. Just be happy I'm not GM of Celtics. But we need another big and I think Birdman would do well here off the bench.

3. Eddie House-- He's a great streak shooter and played well for us last year. there might not be enough minutes for him, though, and he'll chose to move on.

or:
Tyrone Lue-- I'm not crazy about him, but if he's tight with KG, let's give him the benefit of the doubt. If he keeps Starbury from becoming a Celtic, than Lue is already a legend in my mind.

I don't want to see TA go, but if we sign the rooks I don't see much of a shot for Tony. Maybe he could use a fresh start somewhere else. I think Giddens will be an adequate replacement and turn some heads with his play. Walker, too.

My top 3:
1.) J.R. Smith. We got to witness just how cheap the Nuggets owner was last night when he had his GM give the Clippers Marcus Camby for nothing despite the fact that they need defense and Camby was one of the few that played it. Does anyone really think he'd be willing to match an offer sheet for Smith and willing to go back into luxury tax land? I don't. Smith is a deadly shooter and scorer off the bench, still just 22 years old and is definitely athletic enough that Thibodeau can turn him into a solid defensive player.
2.) Josh Childress. I think the Hawks match an offer for him now that they don't have to worry about a Josh Smith offer sheet.
3.) Ricky Davis. Haven't heard much interest in Ricky around the league, but I'd love to have him back as a 6th man again.

Pierce could play the small ball 4 role like Posey did down the stretch if Doc wanted to get 1 of these 3 into the game in crunch time.

Obviously if a restricted FA looks like he might wiggle free for the MLE that is worth you have to look at that but for some reason I think we are going to sign Bostjan Nachbar, I don't know exactly how I feel about that but he can shoot the 3 and rebound a little bit, not a great defender by any means but he would make up for the offensive loss of House and Posey.

Wow, I hadn't even considered Bokie Nachbar. Saying he's 'not a great defender' is an understatement, but he does have some skills. Looked awful last year with NJ. He might do well with a different team; I'd certainly be on the phone with his agent.

Actually, we were looking for a player to replace Posey on the floor, not his seat on the bench. :)

He's a few inches shorter than Pose, but I think Kelenna Azubuike would be a solid replacement. Plays good D, hustles, rebounds, and shoots the 3-ball pretty well. I'd offer him a 4-year deal for 16 mill or so and see if Golden State matches.

snackbar is a pretty decent player but if we sign him i hope that 1. its not for the full mle and 2. we resign allen or pick up quinton ross as I would like to have a defensive presence at the 2/3 available off the bench. snack bar is pretty much lights out off the wide open catch and shoot situations, but his shooting ability is not nearly as good when he has to take a dribble. that being said, he is a guy that can get hot and drop 20 off the bench- hopefully the nights he gets hot, he would be able to give either pierce or ray ray some extra rest.

also, if we don't resign tony, i would really like to sign a wing who isn't afraid to take it hard to the rack on a consistent basis. I haven't seen Snyder as much as you guys have- does he fit the bill

Unfortunately finding a replacement for Posey is VERY unlikely. His skillset is a bit rare:

Can guard 2, 3, and 4s
Can hit clutch threes
Great teammate
Proven winner, 2X NBA champion
Tough and an "instigator". Need 1-2 of those guys
Does all the little things not seen in the stat sheet

It's a tough loss for the Cs. They have Giddens and Walker in the wings, but you win with vets in this league. I don't think any of the remaining available players adds what we need. Lets go with the youth, and re-evaluate at the trade deadline.
