It's all about the benjamins

Post#1 » by Red2 » Thu Jul 17, 2008 1:15 pm

Maggette had a chance to win a championship but he went with the benjamins and chose golden state over the celts, pistons etc. Posey took the benjamins too but at least he gave himself a chance to win. The bottom line is that unless you're a player who's already made a ton of money you're going to take the cash over winning a title. ITyrone Lue just did the same thing and before the books close on this free agency class you're going to see us lose eddie house and possibly tony allen as well unless danny ups the ante- Not that those guys can't be replaced but every loss like that means we need to train a new guy in our defensive schemes etc. Losing Posey was huge and right now next year doesn't look nearly as good as it did yesterday morning. think Danny believed that guys would take less to sign with us because we are the champs; he underestimated the greed factor. I also believe that agents like Falk and Bartelstein place their own agendas and egos infront of their client's best interests ( oh and for what it's worth I now hate Byron Scott even more than I did before). It's strange to me that a team that was willing to pay the luxury tax and spend whatever was needed to win a championship all of a sudden got cold feet about paying james posey an extra $7M. From where I sit the goal is to win a championship and posey gave us a better chance to do that than any other free agent out there. Let's hope danny is right- I really don't care about 4 years from now - I care about next year.

You have to care about four years from now because if Danny didn't we could rebuilding again for 20 years. It was a smart business move and yes it sucks but it was the right choice. It'll be like losing Damon in a way

Also, look at the Pats success. Granted we lost last year but we've been great for a long time and you can attribute that to good drafts, good signings and shrewd business moves that were't always popular. They were always looking ahead. To be a great organization this has to be done.

Yeah, and they also got way more money than they would've got from us. It's not like the offers were comparable, or even close. If they were, then you'd have yourself an argument.

You would've done the same thing if you were those guys and you're lying if you say otherwise.

This is a business. Money matters and it matters a lot.

Posey made a huge contribution to the Celtics. He was the champion and he turned the rest of them into champions. He deserves a big payday, because other team want to become champions too. His value to New Orleans is much greater than his value to the Celtics. If we went four years, they would have gone five.

We are champions. We already have the greatest asset he brings to the team. We can get a backup SF that will play defense.

This was a win-win. Posey gets his payday. We have our championship.

It's really hard to be criticial of Posey at all. He was only in Boston for one year, so it isn't a question of him being loyal to an organization that groomed him. He has two rings, so there's less incentive for him to give something up personally to improve his chances for another - in fact, in a backwards sort of way, it may be more valuable to his legacy to win a title in New Orleans with his third different franchise (although Robert Horry has already patented the role-player with the Midas touch role).

But this is also probably his final contract - he has never made huge money, so getting an extra year's worth of an NBA salary while he had bargaining power is really hard to pass up. NBA players only have a limited window to make their money.

I have no problem with Posey or the organization. My daughter was asking about players and why they don't stay with a team like they used to like Cousey, Hondo, Russell, Bird, etc....well those times are gone and we just have to understand the age we live in and how it is driven by the $$'s. I agree with this post.

I felt like we needed Posey but that is not going to happen now. So we move on to the next phase. Adjusting and trying to make sure we have the best available pieces for #18.

Of course it's about the money. In the minds of self-centered fans, a players goal should be to win a title for their (the fans) team. But you forget, this is their (players) JOB. Players do this for a living. When you leave the company you work for to take another job at another company, it's not because you want to make that company the best in the world, you go to a new company because they give you more money. Calling these guys greedy for something you all would do in your line of work is flat out hypocritical. Players have a limited opportunity to make as much money as they can because what they make now is going to have to last them the rest of their life (in most cases). Yes, they all would like to win, and some like KG and Paul and Ray have the luxury of taking a 100 mil contract instead of a 120 mil deal for the chance to win a title. But if you're talking about 1 mil or 5 mil and you have about 50-60 more years of life for this money to last, then you have to take the five million. The primary concern for players should be supporting themselves and their families, not winning a shiney gold ball.

No ****. It is about the Benjamins, especially if you are a young player with some years left. Who wouldn't want to get paid more.

Also in the case of a player like Posey that has already won a ring, you go for the money.
