Why Matt Barnes? Why not Boston
The Suns put a shot of adrenaline into their team and what had been a sleepy free-agency period by signing ex-Golden State small forward Matt Barnes to a one-year contract.
The sixth-year NBA veteran signed for the league’s veteran minimum contract ($1.2 million, about $400,000 of which is paid by league funds) and will immediately step into the rotation as either a starter or bench player on the wing. He will be in Phoenix to take his physical on Monday morning and is expected to finalize his deal afterward.
If he signed for the league Minimum, why not sign in Boston?

If it's Boston vs. Phoenix offering the same money, I can easily see why he chose Phoenix. In Phoenix he can possibly be a starter and definetely get more minutes then he would here. Also, Phoenix has a system that's very similar to the one he played in Golden State, so he probably feels more comfortable playing there.

My fears exactly, will Boston always be a place no one will want to come to because of the snow.
Do you think he'll get more minutes in Phoenix?
Barbosa, G Hill, Girceck, Diaw, Raja Bell, Strawberry all are wing players.
Think this could mean G Hill will be available?

Re: Why Matt Barnes? Why not Boston
the weather!!! during basketball season is awesome
When I lived back east everyone I knew was suit and tie going to work.
I havent seen on person with a suit and tie in this city in ages. I wear shorts all winter long, 50pct of the time flip/flops.
When it comes to critique on clothes....there is none... even professionally
As a matter of fact first client I meet today wants to walk up the mountain trail as we discuss business.
as a matter of fact gotta go...

Re: Why Matt Barnes? Why not Boston
I assume it's because we didn't offer either.
Ainge was too busy paying Tony Allen 300% the money for 200% the years that Barnes got whoes actually contributed in a playoff game and is a strong SF type that we don't have unlike a wing defender that Giddens, our first round pick, is supposed to be.
Yeah I'm really pissed that we didn't sign Barnes for a 1 year vet min contract an instead wasted so much money and years on Tony Allen who has done nothing to deserve the security he just got.
Hopefully I'm jumping the gun and the second year is a team option.

Bingo.
Plus with us drafting Giddens there wasn't a long-term future here for Barnes. Plus Pierce and Allen are entrenched for a couple more years. In PHX you figure he thinks he will take over Grant Hill's role, maybe sooner than later given Hill's injury history.
I seriously doubt we didn't offer Barnes the vet min. He would be a nice addition. But it was a smart decision by Barnes, just not good for us.

Re: Why Matt Barnes? Why not Boston
I think that Boston is after Finley and George who are significantly better defensive players and more consistent NBA players than Barnes. I don't think Barnes beats Tony Allen out for mins so why come to Boston?
In PHX though they have a lot of wing players most are guards not forwards. Hill and Diaw are there only SFs and Diaw sees mins at the 4.

Well in the Suns are offering an up tempo system that inflates players' scoring. Guys with inflated scoring tend to do well in the free agent market, so Barnes (who apparently wasn't being offered a lot of money) goes to the Suns for one year at the vet. min. and can hope to sign a longer more lucrative deal next year.

When asked this morning on WEEI if Ainge is interested in pursuing George with the remaining MLE. Ainge without hesitation replied, no. I would've an interesting in signing Finley, but I think the Spurs desire to have him back and I believe Ainge is done for now. He'll keep that fifteenth roster spot open leading up to the trade deadline. That's what I would do as well. I realize now that Ainge must have a lot of confidence in the young players: Pruitt, Davis, O'Bryant, Giddens and Walker. Otherwise, he would've gone hard at a free agent small forward. I believe House was resigned to appease Rivers and add insurance in case Pruitt struggles early on.

Re: Why Matt Barnes? Why not Boston
I don't see what Matt Barnes does well. He's not a very good defender. He's a decent shooter. He turns it over a pretty good amount. He also doesn't really have a position. At the minimum I would've had no problem bringing him in, but anything long-term or for $2+ million and I would've thought it was a bad deal.
Azubuike on the other hand, I would've really liked back, especially when it seemed unlikely that Tony Allen would return.
