OT: Marcus Williams traded to GS!

Marcus Is Gone

By FRED KERBER

Well, so much for fighting for his job.

Point guard Marcus Williams, who recently vowed to fight for his minutes after the Nets acquired Keyon Dooling, is headed to Golden State for a future first round pick. The trade will be announced later today.

The pick is lottery protected for 2011 – so the Nets get it if the Warriors are in the playoffs. If it goes to 2012, the pick is protected 1-to-11. It’s protected 1-to-10 for 2013. If it is not conveyed by 2013, the Nets s\get second rounders in 2013 and 2015.

There was a lot of discussion on this board after Danny drafted Rondo instead of Williams. I guess he knew what he was doing. One has a ring and the other get`s traded. Still, I like MW I think he can be a very nice PG in this league. Warriors will definitely be fun to watch...

Yes, I do recall people not just on here preferring M. Williams over Rondo. I not being one of them. Actually, I'd predicted that the Celtics would select him with their first round pick, seventh, before they'd traded it to Minnesota that's how high I'd believed that year that Ainge was on him based on his pre-draft workouts in Boston.

Rondo's a part of that second tier of young and/or up-and-coming point guards in the league.

marcus is a good player who's had bad luck. first he was drafted to a team with jason kidd on it, then he ended up hurt for a season then finally it looks like he's going to get to find himself some playing time with jason kidd on the outs and devon harris lands in front of him.

i'd expect that golden state is the perfect team for him if they give him playing time

Marcus Williams at least has a lot of talent. Especially since the Nets are far from being in win now mode, I can't say I fully understand what they are doing. For the Warriors, this is a much better acquisition than Troy Hudson was last year, even if they have to give a future pick

If Paul got a 4 year/$68 million extension and D. Williams got a 4year/$70 million extension then when it's Rondo's turn he is probably going to get a 4 year/$48 million deal. IMO. Just something to chew on.

We traded a future first for Rondo. NJ traded Marcus for future first. Kind of ironic, isn't it?

I think we have gotten the better of this deal.

I like Marcus as a player and think he will still be good but I never wanted him with the 7th pick. I was hoping we could get Brandon Roy or Rudy Gay.

Marcus should do well in GS system. He hasn't lived up to his potential, but part of that was the hand injury. Now NJ brings in Harris, so good luck Marcus.

Marcus Williams was a guy who was average at everything. Rondo was a guy who was great at some things and had some big deficiencies. That teaches a lesson that you can work on deficiencies and improve them, but an all-around average guy like Williams probably won't be able to suddenly develop any outstanding attributes to make himself more than an average player. Williams would have been a horrible pick for us; and it was foolish of the Nets to pick a guy who plays Kidd's position when they had GLARING frontcourt needs.

Of course, I wanted us to take Patrick O'Bryant with that pick.

Put Marcus on this team and he would be with the ring and Rondo would be the one traded. This means nothing, Id still rather have RR though.

Sorry Tricky Ricky you couldn't be so wrong. You are really short changing Rondo and over stating Marcus Williams. If Williams is so good why are the Nets dumping him after a few years?

This is one of the most ridiculous comments I have seen on this board.

If Rondo was drafted by NJ hed be on the bench when Kidd was there and would find little time when they brought in Devin Harris. Williams didnt have a chance to succeed in NJ. Dont get me wrong Rondo is still the better player but Williams had no chance to succeed in NJ, in Boston I still think we wouldve won #17 with Rondo or Williams.

Marcus Williams was handed mins the minute he put on an NBA uniform. He played almost 17 mpg over two seasons and got worse in year two, and seemed indifferent about it that is whey NJ wants rid of him they want guys who play with intensisty on both ends not just jack up 3's and go through the motions.

I think they are stealing getting anything that looks like a 1st round pick for him. He is essentially a slow footed better shooting Telfair.

Marcus WIlliams doesnt fit the NJ system, plus playing with an awful second unit sort of forced him to be a chucker. I obv would rather have Rondo but Im just saying with the right system Williams might be a good starter or 6th man and that system is one like the Warriors.

Williams has always been more flash than substance. Every now and then he'll make a great pass that gets you excited, but he's a poor distributor on the whole. All the guy does is turn the ball over, shoot horrible percentages, and play no defense. He's a nightmare of an NBA player really at this point, and to assert that he would fit in OK with the Celtics couldn't be further from the truth. In all honesty, he'd be one of the last guys in the entire league that I'd want running the point for the Celts because he'd kill both the offensive and defensive efficiency. I agree with the general point that situation can often dictate success or failure, but Williams would/will fail where ever he goes unless his game drastically changes.

Telfair at least is a quality passer and handles the ball with care....

You say this like getting traded means that you 'suck'. One played for a good team and one played for a bad team so yeah one has a ring. And now one is getting traded to essentially replace a top 5 PG in this league.

i still think marcus williams can be a solid pg in the nba if he commits to working his butt off (which i don't know if he will). he has that pg instinct that can't be taught.

still Rondo and Williams are not even close. Rondo is much better.

I meant that both when drafted were projected to be the longterm answer for both teams at the PG position. But it didn`t work out that way for NJ and Williams.
