I remember this at the time....Bird had been drafted but no McHale or Parish yet....it was like dodging a bullet.

I didn't click on the link, but wasn't it a cabbie who saved Red from going to NY? (Nowadays you're lucky if a cabbie speaks english and knows their way around Boston). Regardless, I don't think Red would have gone anyways. Sure, he was from NY, but he hated the Knicks. Didn't they shaft him earlier on, and he never forgave them for that?
