Homage to the 70s Celtics

Post#1 » by elrod enchilada » Thu Aug 7, 2008 11:36 pm

I wrote this in advance for a CelticsStuffLive show that will go over the great teams in the Celtics past.

Great readf Elrod.

Few people comprehend how ferocious Cowens was or how he dominated men much larger than he was.

As a Celtic fan, and thus a worshiper of the fast break, I watched Big Red motor up and down court all game long. I particularly loved to watch him do it against Jabbar.

Jabbar, the best half-court center ever, was always in shape and could put one long leg in front of the other to cover ground.

But you just tell that HATED chasing Cowens around. Body leaning forward, head down, and forcing himself to pump his arms, he knew that if he did not keep at it then the little crazy man was going to embarrass him.

Like all players, he had a comfort zone. But when Cowens had his wheels churning Jabbar had no choice but to play Boston's game.

Agreed, great read, and a nice look at the very underrated 1970s Celtics...they should have won 3-4 titles, not just 2...

Well Doc, I agree with just about everything you say.

I, too, must confess that the 1968 Celtics were my favorite Celtic team of All-Time (you list '69 as yours, but the '68 team was better since Russell and Sam Jones were one year younger, and Wayne Embry was available for his 5 minutes of backup C in the playoffs).

Regarding your comments about Curtis Rowe, actually, the 1977 team almost went far in the playoffs. I felt that they were a backup point guard away from being able to win it all.
