I think it goes without saying that we are going to develope our young players. DA came in and laid out the plan to win 17, they were the three D's; Draft, Develope and Deal. The signing of O'Bryant strongly implies that we and he will do everything humanly possible to develope him into his maximum NBA capability. This is part of why these young guys want to be Celtics.

This is good news!
Why is this news at all? Clifford Ray is one of the best big men coaches in this league, if not the best. POB is a big man. They are both on the Celtics. Didn't you expect them to meet up at some point?
It is a real slow summer.

yeah i actually saw him working out with Clifford ray about three weeks ago on my way to physical therapy at healthpoint. He looked pretty fit and quick off his feet, and i really think he can surprise some people in the upcoming season, and if not then definately the following season. Golden State just was not the right fit for him.

That's what I'm talking about! POB is going to shock the world this year. I can't wait until we play the Warriors and he can show Don Nelson and dunk on whatever 6'6 player he has playing backup center.

I think it's wrong how people call him a bust, yet, he was isolated by Don Nelson, and isn't a fit for a serious running, small-ball team like the Warriors.
He may well still be a bust for where he was drafted, and just be a role-player - but if he's a relaitvely good one? He's still a legit NBA player, and that's what matters in the end, as well as for you guys.
I like the signing

I didn't realize Ray worked with Howard. It's pretty much expected that they'd be working together. I think O'Bryant will surprise a lot of people.

Re: O'bryant has been working out with Clifford Ray!!!!!!!!!
Its nice that Ray is working with him, but only time will tell. I understand it is technically too early to label him a bust because of his age and experience, but he has the mental makeup of a bust. Howard, Perk, Big Al, those guys were all beasts when they got on the floor, but needed to improve their fundamentals. O'Bryant has been soft at every level he has played at, and it is much harder to improve a player's aggression than it is his skill set. I always gave Big Al and Perk the benefit of the doubt when they struggled because they always played hard. I have trouble giving POB the same benefit until I see the same level of intensity.

O'Bryant doesn't have a game like Mark Blount's but I think he can make a similar jump from scrub to borderline starter- hopefully without becoming an &sshole along the way

This was a good gamble by Danny Ainge...I mean,he's got to give us more than Scot Pollard did....and he's Pollard's replacement I believe ...Not PJ Brown's.

This is good news!
It's good, but it's not news.
It would be news (and bad) if he WEREN'T.

I expect POB to become a solid bench contributor for the Celts. This is the perfect team for his game. Golden St. was the worst fit in the NBA for his game.
much respect to the 2011-2012 champions, Miami Heat, well deserved

OMG OMG OMG!!! The big man coach is working with a big man on his team! Imagine that!
Sorry for the sarcasm. It really is a slow summer for Celtics news, so I can understand your eagerness. It's good too see O'B in the gym, as he clearly needs work in the conditioning aspect. He might never shake the Olowokandi syndrome (overhyped big from a small school without any dominant traits), but at 6-11+, he can at least be 6 fouls and some length down low to replace PJ. I don't think he'll be knocking down clutch clothesline jumpers against the Cavs and Pistons like PJ did though.

There is a big difference between having a jumper and having the cool to hit it in the clutch, PJ was a vet who is as cool as they come under fire, POB is not, i think thats what the other poster was implying.

O'Bryant does have a dominant trait: Shot-blocking...his rebounding is also a plus NBA attribute i'd imagine, based on his length and timing....
I have seen O'Bryant in games and in practice enough to know he's got great physical tools to play. It really is all about his desire to apply those skills intelligently to the game.
My personal guess is that he'll improve his work ethic enough to have a long career-as did Mark Blount...but I don't think he loves to play, so I don't think he'll ever obsess over the little things to the point where he maximizes his potential.
No matter...he can be a very good back-up with just a little dedication to learning his craft and his role, so the $$ and the effort is well worth it. His ability level is greater than this type of role I believe, but that's a bonus...
