Celtics sign Darius Miles

Post#1 » by greenbeans » Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:15 pm

per WEEI

edit: per wiretap too
“Darius has been in twice for workouts with us and has impressed us with his progress, health, and attitude;” said Danny Ainge, Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations/General Manager. “Darius will have the next couple of months to prove to myself and Coach Rivers that he can help us win.”

“I’ve watched the Boston Celtics play a lot last year and loved what I saw in their teamwork and chemistry on the court and it’s the team that I want to try to resume my career with.” said Miles. “I am excited about having an opportunity to play on a team that I feel my personality fits with and a team that can have great success on the court.”

Good signing, if has anything left, he will show it here in boston with the likes of the vets and especially kg around
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Anyone heard if this was for the rest of the MLE or did they get him for the minimum? Also any word on how many years? He was a nice player back on LAC with his buddy Q. I think he is probably the best player available at this point. Would've preferred to get a guy who can shoot the three, take and make big shots, and defend three positions, though. This signing is worthwhile in case Tony is terrible and neither of the rookies are ready to contribute. Miles is still young and was supposed to become a very good NBA player. I haven't kept up with him since he left the Clips, how limited is he after these injuries he's been dealing with?

This is a really odd signing. Isn't he completely out of shape?

Lol this was my first thought as well, about Portland. This makes up for them getting Roy from us (even thought it netted us a championship and Roy will probably be retired from injuries in 5 years).

I think this is a solid pick up for the Celtics. Lots of questions to be answered but I'm sure DA saw what he needed to in Darius to sign him.

interesting signing. I hope Darius has grown up a bit ,and if he hasn't we have KG to get in his face. Think he will bring back the "Pharoah" look?

He's on a minimum deal, probably not even guarenteed....Ainge said he has 2 months to show he belongs, so that means he was signed to a bare-bones deal with the intention of seeing if he can make the club...this was a very minor commitment...

He is sure to start slow, and I believe he has a 10 game suspension to serve at the start of the season (substance abuse). A poster on another site had indicated it is reported as a non-guaranteed contract, and if that is the case then it leaves some options available for Ainge should he not work out.

Lots of reasons to tune into training camp this year - O'Bryant, Pruitt, Giddens, Miles, maybe Walker - some intruiging potential up-side to the team.

If he's healthy, it looks like we have a back up SF for Pierce.

He's a low cost gamble, that could fill a team need.

Let's see what he's got left in the tank.

I was happy to see the "He has 2 months" comment from Danny . . . I expect this to be kind of like last summer's singing of Dahntay Jones. Let him play with us in preseason and camp and see how he fairs. If he can show what he used to and take advantage of this opportunity I'm all for it. I'd still like to see us look at Mickael Gelabale or Ruben Patterson for the 3 spot though. . .At least if Miles doesn't pan out I'd like to see us look at those guys.

Don't we still kind of need a pg? House is a 1-2 and not a greeeeat Pg. . .I'm not convinced Pruitt is ready to be our main back up . . . What about Darrell Armstrong? He plays D at least.

two good articles posted on celticsblog...i'm amped about this signing...low risk, high reward...my type of investment...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/w ... /17/miles/

http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/s ... 3261551200

It looks like he was very smart and took some roids to help in his recovery from a supposed career ending injury...he figured what the hell I will miss first 10 games but get a possible career back...**** I would have done the same thing...

there was a game two or three years ago where Miles had a fro going. Wallace - esque. Tommy made comment along the lines that he looked like a pharoah and that he should have a scepter.

July 27th:

GreenMachine wrote:There is a very good chance we sign Miles.

Not only can we pay him the Vet Min - It does not count against the cap! DA sees this as a Ricky Davis move - but we have to give up Nothing to get him - not even cap room!

I love this move in all ways but one. It means No PT for Walker or Giddens and less for TA.

If he comes in and can't play or is a baby... you cut him. If he can play - he is our 6th man.

A month later... I still love this move.

IT DOESN"T COUNT AGAINST THE CAP! This is a no-brainer.

The ONLY downside is Walker most likely won't be signed (this year) and Miles/Giddens/TA now have to fight for scraps of PT (although maybe that fight ends up as a good thing...)

Note: I know most of you don't care about lux tax - but A) it made this an easy decision for DA and B) it keeps us flexible (and you all Should care about cap flexibility)

I like the signing. When healthy Miles was alot better then people realize. He fits a need.

Also we shouldn't overlook the stick it to Portland factor when it comes to this signing. Danny has always said that trades should help both teams. I think Portland stuck to us really good in the Telfair trade..

The only bad news - do we still sign Walker? I hope so.
