21 pages of POB....
Found this on the Golden State board. Interesting that it was a topic from OUR board that started this 21 page GSW fan prospective on our newbie POB. Personally, I just cant wait till the season starts. We are the champs, and we have an infusion of new blood that I am very excited to see!

Re: 21 pages of POB....
The 21 pages on POB are not really about POB. POB is just a point of argument between those who think Nelson/Mullin/Cohan can do no wrong and those who think Nelson/Mullin/Cohan can do no right.
I and many Warriors fans thought I saw a some talent and good athleticism for his size in POB. Nelson went with a very short bench and did not play rookies. When POB's option was not picked up those fans who did not have faith in management wondered whether POB really sucked or whether Nelson whims and moods were causing the Warriors to give up on a potentially good player.
A few posters who think Don Nelson is God thought it was their job to set the non-believers straight.
POB might be a very good Center if he matures out of what ever got him in trouble with Nelson. On the surface POB seemed like a nice well spoken kid. I saw no signs that he was a primadona or a thug. He might have a lazy streak and he might not love Basketball. I don't really know what went wrong.
Good luck with the POB project. I moved from Boston to Oakland in 1991.

Re: 21 pages of POB....
Yes, I realize POB is basically a symbol in that thread--- just read the end of it and you could argue that it is about almost everything EXCEPT POB working out with Cliff Ray.
I moved to San Francisco in 1990, and really got into the team with Run TMC up through "Put a little mustard on it, Latrell" (so I remember when Gatling was a rookie, too). I moved back East but still root for the Warriors. Man, I've rooted for some teams that have sucked for years, and it was amazing to see how quickly the Celtics turned it around. I hope the Warriors are contenders soon, too, but it's very tough out West.

I think you'd be surprised at how many big men are in the NBA with those traits. Why don't we at least watch him play before all the gloom and doom (that's what usually seperates this forum from CelticsBlog).

The Nellie for/against debate over there seems to rival the Walker debate that used to rage here.
It seems the 21 pages are made up of:
1. No one knows what POB will do because Nellie didn't give him a chance, but that he has the tools; versus
2. its the NBA, if he can't fight for his position he sucks.

The Celtics invested very little to get POB. If he does not work out it is no big deal.
In the few minutes of playing time POB got last year he showed a lot of potential. Hard core Nellie backers would disagree with me on whether he showed that potential; but I am sure they were blinded by their loyalty to Nelson.
I can't make any sense of why the Warriors kept POB on the roster after mid-season when they did not pick up his option. Obviously POB would not be resigning with the Warriors and Nellie was not going to play him. To the credit of POB and the Warriors management neither side would tell the media what was going on. We Warrior fans were left trying to read the tea leaves but at least POB and the Warriors management were not criticizing each other in public.
Nelson also did not play promising rookie Brandan Wright. Nelson has a history of not getting along with some players. There is a decent chance that the Celtics have lucked into something really good by picking up POB.

A bunch of us Warrior fans will be watching POB this year. Some of us will want him to succeed so we can say "we told you so" while the others will want him to fail so they can say "we told you so". We already did a dry run of this behavior when Stephane Lasme was cut and joined the Heat.
POB can fight for and hold position just fine when he feels like doing it.

I hope so. If not, we'll just take another flyer on Brandan Wright after you release him next year. I hope he and POB are best buds.

Well, that's one way to put it. Another way to put it is that Nellie had every reason to be down on Patrick, because Patrick didn't offer much in the way of effort or improvement during his tenure with the Warriors.
Nellie doesn't have to be a god to be right about Patrick.

I've found that when posters preemptively attack the opposing view with crap like that ("blinded by loyalty"), it's usually because they don't have a better argument to fall back on to make their case.

exactly. Just because you're lazy and don't care about basketball doesn't mean you can't be a great big man. If you ever lose hope about Patrick O'Bryant, just remember all the great big men that are lazy and don't care about basketball: Mark Blount, Michael Olowokandi, Kwame Brown, Jerome James, etc

There will be 21,000 pages before POB finishes his career in Boston.

Couple things, I forgot what TMC stood for could you help me out? Also we did NOT turn it around quickly! 20 years is not quick it was gut wrenching watchin your favorite sports team become the laughing stock of the league.

To Devilz:
1) I didn't proclaim him to be (or potentially become) a "great" big man.
2) We're going on speculation from a very dubious source (he "might" not love basketball, he "might" be lazy). Yet some people are acting like this unnamed source/rumor is the gospel, and labeling the kid without taking into account his age and learning environment (there vs. here).
3) It's a low-risk move, yet going by the reactions of some posters we just signed him to a multi-year extension.
4) We have no other athletic big man (as in, taller than 6'7") on the bench.
5) Comparing him to those players is totally irresponsible, as it would for me to project him to be the next David Robinson (by merely saying he's long and athletic). I don't understand this oversimplified "black or white" view of the kid, especially since he hasn't even tried on his jersey yet. At least give him some time under Clifford Ray, KG, Perk, etc. and see what he can do before you engage in hyperbole.

Shaq is lazy.
Robert Parish was considered lazy and unmotivated by Warriors fans.
Celtics very own Cedric Maxwell didn't always give his all on the court.
Point is there are/were a lot of players in this league, who didn't really *loved* the game and treated it just like a job and stil performed decently.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the C's were interested in taking Tim Hardaway in the 1989 NBA draft but took Michael Smith instead. It would've been fun watching Tim Hardaway in green.
