Michael Jordan: we were lucky last year

Post#1 » by stretch » Fri Oct 3, 2008 5:24 am

Saw a quick clip of Ray Allen on ESPN, in the context of a Celtics discussion.

Michael Jordan apparently told him that we were lucky.

When you win one, you are lucky

It is only when you win two that you start establishing yourself.

It's hard not to disagree. Miami was lucky - one hit wonder. So was Detroit that one year.. it was all clicking with Big Ben playing out of his mind.

That shouldn't take away from the best season ever. but it should be the motivation this season.

Who cares what he says? He's just jealous he couldn't do that to his Bobcats.

Guess who coached the Lakers? Jordan couldn't beat the Celtics until he got help.

MJ is right and Ray Allen agreed with him. The celtics were by far the best team last year. Now prove it again this year. He is saying lots of teams win one. Now show everyone it wasn't a fluke and do it again. I agree with that.

I hope the team looks at it the same way and is freaking hot to defend the title. I have no doubt about that though :)

I'm not sure "lucky" is the word. When you hit .202 in minor league baseball and get a hit in a game, then that's "lucky".

yeah, i mean, what a below average baseball player he was. if he was hitting .272 then oh boy! major league prospect!

I mean, the best player to ever play the game must be "lucky", then.

He wasnt bashing us at all, he was right and Ray agreed.

Definitely not a slight against the Celtics. He's just trying to motivate Jesus, trying to keep him hungry. No need for Celtic Nation to be offended by this one.

Anything short of repeating as champions this season will be a disappointment.

In my opinion, like the Lakers, Boston benefited from securing home court advantage throughout the playoffs this season. If the Celtics were successful in achieving their goal of winning a NBA championship. Then I believe the Celtics were more unnerved than "lucky." That is to say, they were committed to winning each series despite their early road losses. The Celtics didn't waver... They'd those home games to rely on during the first and second rounds before they eventually were able to see success on the road in the third and championship round. There's nothing wrong with that. If you've home court advantage throughout the playoffs and do little with it. Then that's unfortunate.

I think lucky is the wrong word choice to sum up Boston's run to a NBA title this season. I mean how many teams that are expected to reach at least the NBA finals, do so undefeated? Boston deserves credit for maintaining their poise. I just feel to say that the Celtics' season was a case of a fortunate team is selling them short. Yeah, you catch breaks and have the balls fall your way. But, the Celtics weren't "lucky" to win it all. To be lucky is to be a team that wasn't expected to reach that ultimate point in the playoffs. Boston I'm certain, based on their regular season record, was one of the favored teams to reach the NBA finals. And they didn't drop the ball.

I agree with him. All he is saying is that it's a fluke until proven otherwise. For example you can call the Piston's and the Heat championships flukes, but you can't say that about the Laker's and Spur's. All it means is that the Celtics have to prove that they are undisputable champions.

...and the only person Jordan has to be jealous of is Russel.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

Who cares what the 2nd greatest of all-time says? Anything not involving him playing basketball I really could care less about, this IS the same guy who took Kwame 1 don't forget.

I'm a closet MJ fan. This is my coming out party!!! he always talked about the challenge of doing it again, and being the best every time he stepped on the court. that meant winning championships. Now that he is retired for good I can say I'm out of the closet.LOL

Lucky isn't really the right word since we clearly were the best team in the league all season. I hope they do have that mindset though. Jordan wasn't a winner by mistake. You have to be hungry and never satisfied to keep winning IMO. They dont want to end up as one hit wonders.

While MJ is the greatest basketball player of all time, I do believe his judgement does not live up to what he did on the court. It was NOT LUCK when you guys came back from a 24 point blow out in one game and the following after blew the lakers by more than 24.

You guys were lucky to get to he finals(remember the cavs game), but was not luck when they destroyed the lakers.

When you win six, you are lucky

It is only when you win seventeen that you start establishing yourself.

that's cute and all, but not the point he was raising.

Plus, the Chicago Bulls (not ther other chicago teams) are some years behind the celtics in being around. So, thats not really fair now is it.

Jordan's right. Ray Agreed. Whoopdedoo

That was tongue in cheek on my part. I would never under normal circumstances be unfair to the Chicago Bulls.

...they don't need MORE problems.
