The 2 leaving Detroit gave us the most trouble
I love Iverson, but that is moving backwards Dumars
Chauncey is the best player they had, and to give him up with their 2nd best big for Iverson ???

I dont see the logic other than to infuse new blood in hopes of a not very likely high return
Im very surprised at this from Dumars----Prince, Billups, Rip, and Sheed still have a ton of BB left in them

Detroit can either play Iverson and Stuckey together in the back court and trade Hamilton. Or I don't get this trade. Billups and Hamilton have been one of the best back court tandems in the league. Maybe Dumars believe Stuckey's time is now.

Oddly, Iverson could've been a Piston years ago and Billups was already a Nugget (earlier in his career) before he would become the All-Star player he's today.

When both Larry Brown and Allen Iverson were still in Philly, Iverson was this close to becoming a member of the Detroit Pistons. The only thing that stopped the blockbuster was apparently Matt Geiger’s refusal to re-work a trade kicker for the deal to work within the salary cap.

Well, Geiger is too busy playing around his helipad these days to affect NBA trades, and there have reportedly been talks about a potential deal between Detroit and Denver involving their two star guards.

From the Boston Globe:

NBA sources said the Nuggets have inquired about obtaining Denver native Chauncey Billups from the Pistons for Allen Iverson. Because of Iverson’s lucrative contract ($20.8 million) it would take more than Billups ($11 million), though.

At first glance, the logic to this rumored trade proposal is a bit hard to understand - Billups is signed through the 2011 season; Iverson, meanwhile, becomes a free agent next summer. Are the Pistons willing to pay Allen an enormous sum after he becomes a free agent, or would they let him walk and simply hand over the keys to the back-court over to Rodney Stuckey?

I like this. Detroit i think takes a huge hit defensively. AI isnt going to outmuscle Rondo. Can Iverson coexist within a team concept? It wont be just him and another player taking all the shots (ie. Mello/Webber) AI has to share shots with Rip,Sheed,Prince,Stuckey.

It is good trade for DEN who I thought was going to dismantle. Billups is a better fit and McDyess will fit in nice with their line up. The Pistons now match up better with CLE but worse with Boston as Billups was the clear advantage they had. I don't think this will be the Pistons last move. They need to go get a passing big man like Brad Miller or someone to help move the ball on offense. They certainly are not going to be your same old Pistons.

The one thing this does address for DET that has become clear in the last two post seasons is they now have a go to scorer who can get to the line late in games. Team basketball is great but there here has to be someone who can take over in late games situations. DET had talent but they had the secondary options now they have the ultimate take over guy.

I love Chauncey Billups because he is a true champion. But he is overrated too. He is not in the same class as AI and never was. He does have the mettle that AI lacks but in terms of talent and production there is no comparison. McDyess is a nice veteran player but he is complimentary and you have to give up something in addition to Billups.

Is AI washed up? That is a big question.

I like this trade for Detroit because they have Stuckey/Maxiel who are ready to take over the roles of Billups/McDyess. They may not be as good compared to past years but there might not be much drop off right now. So really, they just added AI who brings a much needed dimension to Detroit. He brings speed and a running game to the team.

You still have Rip, Wallace and Prince and that is a great veteran core to add a guy like Iverson to. Who can match the energy and speed of an AI/RIp back court?

And even if this trade fails for Detroit short term. The salary implications are enormous. Which star wouldn't consider Detroit as a FA destination with the solid core that will remain?
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

This helps Detroit. It gives them a go-to scorer, which is what they've lacked during their entire recent run. The question is, is it too late? Are these guys already too old to put it together? I guess we'll find out. But I think Detroit just got a lot scarier.

Nice move for both teams IMO, especially for Detroit. Detroit wasn't going to beat Boston or Cleveland anyhow, so why not roll the dice and get Iverson? And as mentioned, if things don't work out, you cut bait and play with all that cap space.

Exactly. Detroit finally gets a go-to scorer they need to make a deep run in the playoffs.

In the short term Detriot just got worse and Denver got better. In the long run this trade puts Detriot in great shape to stay competive and go after FA's with over 30 million in cap space.

Detriots has a nice core of Hamilton, Stuckey, Maxiell, Prince, and Amir Johnson with cap space to go after a big name free agent or two once Iverson and Wallace are FA's. this gives them flexability to stay competitive beyond the next couple years.

For Denver it puts them right back in the playoff mix out west. They can now slide JR Smith who many believe is ready to bust out in the starting lineup. Billups, Smith, Anthony, Martin, Nene with McDyess and Carter off the bench. They're a better team without Iverson. That experiment clearly didn't work.

Word is that McDyess won't stay in Denver.

Could we work a deal for him? I know we tried to get him in the past.

I feel bad for Chauncey. he took a huge pay cut to stay with DET. A I does not really make this team better.Ai defeintly makes DET worse defensively. I think Chauncey was DET best player by far. Rasheed is getting older and his game keeps on getting further and further from the basker. Rasheed is probably the next to go for that reason. it keeps looking better

It is more of an issue that he wants to stay in DET and that may have been holding up the deal, he may not be willing to report to DEN.

I also don't think that he and KG get along very well. Not the most important thing but certainly an issue when trying to recruit someone.

cant say i feel like this really improves either team. maybe denver a little bit.

i feel like chauncey was a huge part of detroit's winning, and will hurt losing him more than they think, and dice gave us problems too.

i think the team that benefits most here is the Celtics! rondo can handle the answer easier than mr big shot billups

Eh, usually on buy outs, the player goes back to his old team. I am sure Mcdyess will not mind waiting the mandatory number of days, and sign back up with DET for a title run.

I'm not sure how Denver got better from this deal.

Billups is not a true PG, he is a systems PG....he has said it himself, that he is not the normal PG that creates assists on his own pass, rather his passes lead to another pass that leads to the assist.

I don't see how Billups's defense will help in the Western Conference either....at best it is a wash compared to the additional scoring that AI brought to the Nuggets.

People think AI is finished or washed up....look at AI's numbers in Denver (25/7/2 steals)....that is with another 20+ scorer on the team...something AI has never had in Philly.

I think AI will get the best out of this deal in Detroit because he will get the ball in his hands more with Rip moving a ton without the ball.

The Pistons just became our #1 threat to the NBA Title.....before it was the Lakers....but now we might not even make the Finals this year with Detroit standing in our way.
