I know, this coming from a crotchety ring-chaser who did exactly what he accused Rondo of doing...riding coattails to a ring!

GP, STFU!

Lets see here, 2006 NBA Finals - GP in 22 mpg averaged 2.7 points 2 assists 1 steal, while shooting 37%

2008 Finals, Rajon averaged 9.3 points, 6.7 assists and 1 and a half steals ... while playing (on average) only 5 more minutes a game.

In other words... Gary Payton, you're an idiot.

Let's be honest here. Rondo is not the caliber of a point guard that Payton was. Payton has been around the league for a long time and can probably formulate a good estimation of a point guards skill set and abilities. If Payton (in his prime) were to come back into the league, he would be an elite PG. Rondo; on the other hand, is a pg who has KG, Allen, and Pierce to make the game that much easier for him. Put Chris Quinn in his position and he too would have some shine.

The point is, GP said Rondo rode coattails to a ring and doesn't deserve his...when Rondo was a STARTER, played loads of min, and put up good numbers. GP with the Heat was a bench player with diminished skills who rode the coattails of Shaq, Wade, and the refs to a title.

I'll say it again, GP, STFU!

Rondo is a top 5 talent at pg. He has gifts you cannot teach. So what he cant score 20 a game (although if he were on a shity team he quite possiable could), he grabs boards, blocks shots, comes up with game changing steals and is still only 22! In three years he will be an elite pg in the league, mark my words!

Tough for Payton to swallow because Rondo got a Ring at 21 and Payton didnt come into the league till he was 22.

Gary waited a long time for his ring, so I see why he is jealous.

On a side note, If Rondo becomes a Complete Player like Payton was, Celtics will remain good for a long time.

Please.

Really? Top ten might be realistic but top 5? Gimme a break. And yes, Chris Quinn would be shining with KG, PP and Ray Ray opening up the floor for him.

No, it doesn't parallel that idea whatsoever. It would be more like saying "you will be a success if you are business patners with Trump, Jack Welch and Richard Branson".
Compare Rondo to Jose for example. If Rondo were in the Raptors system you would be viewing Rondo in a completely different light. A large part of Rondos success is based around the talent around him. A player like Jose would flourish because he truly is an elite pg.

Yes the starters make Rondo better but vice versa. Isn't that what good players do? No way we would have won last year without Rondo. Rondo makes our offense flow and how many pg's do you see that can rebound like him. He's getting better and better and the only really knock on him is his shooting when in reality it really isn't that bad.....he just doesn't shoot enough

Comparing Chris Quinn to Rondo is laughable.

Admittedly, comparing Chris Quinn to Rondo was a bit of a stretch. However; put a guy of Daniel Gibsons caliber in place of Rondo on the Celts roster and the result would have been the same. Rondo is an above average PG but he is by no means an elite level PG.

1. Rondo plays better defense than most of the guards out there. He is good and he is getting better. I think the 6 steels in the finals game 6, was the big difference, he disrupted all what the Lakers were doing.
2. Ask Doc and he would tell you, it is pretty tough having 3 HOF on the floor to guide, and that is an experience from his playing days.
3. GP had Kobe, Malone, and Shaq and didn't do much.

and I would see Rondo as top 5 PGs in the near futur. Unless some new talent shows up in the next few years, CP, Williams, Parker will be there with him. Rose will have that 5th spot.

This is the same Gary Payton that gift wrapped title to the Pistons and the Finals MVP to Chauncey Billups, right? Thought so.

Regardless, did he even bother to watch Game 6 against the Lakers?

There are two ends of the basketball court, Main Event. Rondo is an elite defensive PG, possibly the best in terms of physical tools (outside of Derrick Rose), and he's a solid floor general and passer. So no, Rondo is not easily replaced. You can insert a better shooting PG and sure it would help the offense perform better but people are foolish if they look at the Celtics offense first. This team is about defense first and foremost and Rondo is a really big part of what they are able to do on that end.

I like GP. But GP is hating on Rondo. I can understand his hate - to the extent that GP was a far superior player who never won a championship as a major part of the team. But at the same time Rondo is a heck of a fit for the C's.

His ability to fit in seemlessly with 3 all-stars - and direct the team shouldn't be understated. The nice thing about Rondo is that he plays so unselfishly in a league that rewards me first play. And it's the same with Perkins. His defense, passing, rebounding, hustle and unselfish play make him great for the Cs. When you have 3 scorers in the lineup it's a blessing to have a player like that.

Sure Rondo on another team might not be that useful. I think alot of these young PG coming out are just as good - Derrick Rose for example. There was this I think insane poster on the Cs blog who was convinced Rondo was much faster then any of the other mighty mites. That's not true either.

But for us Rondo was the perfect fit and the perfect guy. I don't see him making all-star teams and dominating games with his crappy jumper. But he can be a a fixture for us for the next ten years. Easily the best PG we have had since Sherm Douglas..

Rondo absolutely deserves his championship ring - of course. I mean come on Pollard and Scalabrine got one. Rondo is 10x more deserving then those guys.
