What about Joe Smith?

Post#1 » by CWitch » Wed Dec 3, 2008 10:34 am

Joe Smith can do many of the things PJ did and he is really good friends with KG. He looked real good when we played him last year. At this stage in his basketball career it just seems like a waste him being on the Thunder.

He won`t finish this season with Thunder, IMO. He will probably get traded, if not, he is a very good candidate for a buy-out. And if he is indeed bought-out I would love to have him on the celtics.

I'd love to have Joe Smith aboard.
Reliable guy, good character, fills a void.
I would really like this move.

He'd be the perfect off the bench front court pairing for Glen Davis.

The only way I see is a buyout, otherwise we don't have the pieces to get him here.

I can definitely see a buyout happening...I doubt OKC would want him on the books all season...

I think its a good idea, he'd be getting most of Baby's minutes which is a good thing. Because he's much more reliable then Davis.

I agree, I'm not sold on Davis ever being anything other than a shorter/bigger version of Walter McCarty who plays better defense...

Yep, he'd be a great 11th man on the team, but I'd much rather have PJ or Joe ahead of him for height issues. I'm sick of seeing him not make easy buckets and getting outrebounded.

Same here. While I like him personally (he seems like a nice guy) I don't like his game and it still bothers me that he spent his summer working out at Krispy Kreme while Leon and Rondo and Perk spent it in the gym and weight room...I was shocked to see how much "conditioning" (maybe of his hair?) he did over the summer...you'd think after winning a ring as a ROOKIE he'd have come back raring to go...

Smith would be ideal. The only possible way it seems though would be a buyout.

cfan and insatiable... and inevitably pete will chime in i'm sure.

Davis has been the first player off the bench quite a bit lately. The reason being, he's a solid defender, a smart player, and a physical presence. He's earning minutes but he's just not putting up the numbers yet.

I think people are going to be surprised if the Celtics bring in a long PF or a C. Davis is still going to win minutes over Powe because he's more consistent/capable on the defensive end and he has a developing offensive game.

I cringe when BBD is in, whereas I love seeing Leon in the game...I guess we are looking at it from different perspectives. I just find BBD to be more of a liability, especially on the offensive end...I haven't seen *ANY* development, other than the hideous jumper he keeps missing, which he insists on continuing to shoot because he hit a few in a game early in the season and now considers himself a jumpshooter...

He's taking the jumpshot because he has confidence in it and because the second unit NEEDS him to spread the floor otherwise they're sunk. You probably cringe while Davis is in because you're not paying attention to what is being asked of him on the court. Set picks and screens, take the shot when you're open, intelligently crash the boards (he needs to be back for defensive help), and pass the ball to the open man. He does all of these things he just hasn't been knocking down the jumpshot.

Defensively he's basically asked to play Kendrick Perkins role, which is possibly one of the most difficult roles defensively in the NBA (this is why Perk is underrated). He has to guard the best 4-5(and he does a pretty friggin good job of it), he has to show on every screen, recover back to the paint, switch... all that stuff and he makes his rotations flawlessly. Not only does he have all these responsibilities but he also has to close off the inevitable stream of penetration allowed by House, Scals and a tired Ray and Paul. Basically Davis has the dirtiest, toughest, no thanks' role you could possibly get on a team. And he does it all with passion and physicality... That's why he get's minutes and if you can't GET that than you just don't get what UBUNTU and team basketball is all about.

I do understand team basketball and ubuntu...and I do appreciate BBD's hustle, screens, etc. I just wish he worked on his conditioning and shorter-range/inside game more. He's in a tough position...because of his short height, and lack of speed and jump, he'll never be an inside presence, but he'll never be a great jumpshooter with that shot and lack of lift.
