Are there too many teams in the NBA?

Maybe its just me, but I feel like the NBA might have too many teams. Perhaps we should have a dispersal draft like the Houston Comets had in the WNBA. There's just so many really awful teams in the NBA that guys who would be 2nd or 3rd star players have to lead teams. Look at how many bad teams are now in the West. There's like 10 teams that are bad in the whole league.

This idea of a large dispersal draft could also help the D-league. There would be better talent in the league. Maybe each NBA team could finally get their own team as well.

Absolutely YES. They should disperse a few of these low market bad teams. Think about how much better relevant teams could get using some of the guys who are rotting away on bad franchises. Also it'd be easier for teams to get marquee players for less money (since they're will be more available) allowing more flexibility under the cap for teams.

haha. Yep, California has too many teams....
Seriously though, I don't think the league needed to expand and add the Grizzlies, Raptors, or Bobcats. There was really no competitive reason behind it. Actually if they could go back to 23 teams like the 80s, that'd be great.
I'd Cut the Bobcats, Thunder, Grizzlies, Nets(turnout is so low...), Clippers, and then two of Magic, Kings, and Warriors.

Imagine Seattle times however many other cities that lose their hometown team if this idea was put in place. That's how bad it would be. So no, but without thinking about the emotions of fans, yes it would be great and much more competitive.
On another note I think this would help the players to some extent, maybe not statistically but a 20 year old kid like Kevin Durant wouldn't be expected to carry his team already because chances are he'd be on a team that already has a star and he would be able to ease into a star role. Rather than being forced to BE the Thunder, he would be a part of the Thunder.

No
What we need is to STAY at 30 for a while. No more new teams!

^^Yeah, stay at 30.
A dispersal draft would be cool though..
Bobcats-Okafor
Thunder-Durant
Grizzlies-Mayo
big names!

There aren't too many. If you think about it, the ammount of teams that are flat out not competitive right now can only be counted on one hand. This includes Washington, OKC, Memphis, LAC, and Minni.
Everyone else has enough talent to make a run or a fighting chance. Even marginal teams like the Bobcats and Bucks have promising young pieces and are a short win streak away from .500.
The talent pool has grown considerably in the NBA because of the international infusion. It's almost like 90% of the teams have an international rotation player.

Agreed.
My thoughts on this is that we're a big country with a LOT of underserved sports markets. I think they're all pretty much covered, except for Seattle. And I agree with whoever said that California doesn't need four teams. Also, if the Nets move, they shouldn't go to New York. I hate this two-team city stuff in all the major sports. Once city, one team.
If any team should go, it should be the Clippers or the Nets. I feel that Seattle needs a team. And I also don't have a problem with Oklahoma City getting a team--that pretty much covers Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas.
Kansas City...now there's a city that should have a team.

I like the idea, but how do the players get redistributed. I especially like the idea of getting Big Al back, he and KG would be awesome next to each other

What about a two division competition with promotion and regulation like the Eurpoean football leagues?
15 teams in each division, seperate playoffs for each one, bottom four in Division 1 at the end of the season get relegated to Division 2, top four from Division 2 get promoted to Division 1.

Yes, I think 7-8 teams should be contracted (at least)

How about we reduce roster sizes from 15 to 12? That would have the effect of removing the 90 least talented players in the league, or the equivalent of 6 teams. I'm not sure that would fix the watered down problem though, since there are probably few teams stashing away good players in the 13,14,and 15th roster slots.

Fewer teams means better talent and better games. No one wants to watch the Memphis Grizzlies play the Oklahoma City Thunder. I'd cut off at least ten teams if I had the power. The cut off teams could form a new league and keep their team names and everything.

If we had teams dispersed there will still be teams that look bad. Even if it's a 10 team league I'm sure one will get walked on by the others. Don't fix if it ain't broke.

Watered down from what? There are enough foreign players whose countries didn't even do basketball 20 years ago to fill out several teams, certainly more than the number that have been added. The league seems worse to people because there are more teams and more players hence more people they haven't heard of, not because there is some watering down of talent. It's just the fans attention to each player and team is watered down.

24 is a nice number of teams. worst case scenario is that we have to stick with 30 teams.

the competitive balance in the league needs work every night there is 3-4 blowouts and 30+ blowouts are becoming more common.

We are too many without a team like St. Louis, Seattle, San Diego, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Kansas City.
