Can we stop saying 'Big 3'? I think it's time.

Post#1 » by Dirty Water » Mon Dec 22, 2008 1:54 am

This is a team.
Rondo and Perk are true veterans now.
We have the best starting five in the league. Hands down. No discussion about that. Pure Celtic basketball.
We have tied the best start with 2 losses in NBA history.
We will most likely take the record over the Brand-less sixers on Tuesday

Stop the Big 3 label.
Who's with me on this?

Count me in, Big 3 makes Boston seem like a 3 man team, when realistically they have an all star or near all star at all 5 positions.

Kevin Garnett, 11 All Star Teams, League MVP
Ray Allen, 8 All Star Teams
Paul PIerce, 6 All Star Teams, Finals MVP

I think Rondo needs to make 3 or 4 All-Star Teams,
and nail about 2 dozen game winning shots,
to be in the same sentence with PGA.

If the Celtics start calling the last shot for Rondo,
when the Celtics are down 2 with 7 seconds left,
Rondo will start his 7 year journey to be in the same context as PGA.

I am excited about the way Rondo and Perk have been playing, but I have to agree with Jammer.

For me, the young guys would have to play at an allstar level and be consistent for a few years.

Great to see both Perk and Rondo playing so well. I hope Rondo plays aggressively when we go to LA. I'd love to see him go to the basket against their defense (all day long).

The original Big 3 played with Ainge and DJ, who were better players than Rondo and Perk thus far in their careers. Bird, McHale, and Parish were still called the Big 3.

This means that either the original big 3 is better than the new big 3 (which would make a good argument for creating a new team oriented nick name). Or... this means that we're overrating Perk and Rondo.

I don't like the big 3 nick because it isn't original anywyas. Their nickname should be something defense oriented because they're one of the best defensive teams in the history of the league.

Agreed. Except I like the name "Big Three". Notice how every team with 3 good players (some not even all-stars!) are now also being called the Big Three? Copycats! I thought that was exclusive to the Celtics. :P

So you're saying we can't be a team until 3 or 4 all-star appearances by Rondo? That's a little ridiculous. All I'm saying is stop this Big 3 label. It makes us look like a 3 man team. Anyone who plays basketball knows you cannot win with 3 men on the court. Rondo and Perk have made no all-star appearances, so does that mean we need to keep calling them the Big 3? Face it no matter how many all-star caliber players you have on your team you aren't going to get more than 5 all-stars (aka pistons 2005).

Let's face it guys, we are in the midst of watching the best Celtics team this year (08-09) Than we will see for the rest of the decade, possibly for the next 20-30 years. KG, Pierce and Ray are right at the end of their productive prime and Rondo and Perk are just hitting their prime. It's the perfect scenario and it's why we are 26-2.

I'd love them to be renamed, but i think the Big 3 nickname might be too irreversable to get rid of. After last year Boston has become so known for their new Big 3 that it will stick with GPA their whole careers. Rondo and the others can have their own nicknames.

While I don't think you can call it the Big 4 or even 5 if some are ready to add in Perk. Big 3 needs to stop. It is not three players carrying this team anymore.

So what should we call them?

The 4-ce (force)
Fantastic Four
The C-eatles (which one's Ringo?)

Could go with "The Celtics".

Big 3 isolates that group from Perk and Rondo when they really don't deserve to be on a different platform.

Every great player deserves a nickname. Larry Legend, Robert "Chief" Parish,...wait what was Kevin Mchales. LOL Herman Munster.

Tommy even gave the great Mark Blount the nickname "The Hammer".

I cannot believe the Celtics continue to keep this torrent pace of victories going.

I think you have a big 2(KG/PP) and then a team of great team guys on the same page.

I don't have a problem with individual nicknames, I just don't see a reason to separate KG, PP, and RA from the rest of the team like they're the "main guys", and the rest are just space fillers.

I'm not sure if you have even seen the Celtics play this year...?
From what I've seen (80%) of the games, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo have been the Celtics best two players.
