The Art of Opening Some Roster Spots

Post#1 » by Hemingway » Fri Dec 26, 2008 8:11 pm

While we may not agree who, I think at this point most agree that we will bring in someone. The bench has only been consistent at being inconsistent and we need some more firepower. The question now (besides who to bring in) is who to let go. It very well may be more then one player we add. The way I see it there are 3 types of moves we can make.

1. Cuts!

We could always place someone on waivers. The only players we have not locked up after this season are Sam, Leon and the Baby. I only see Sam being let go if it is on his terms, ie he doesn't feel ready to play. I doubt this will happen. We also have Scal, POB and Pruitt with one year after this. POB and Gabe for small money. Would anyone take either of these guys off waivers? I doubt it. It looks like with any cuts we just have to take a loss, which we may or may not care about.

2. Trades of players not in the rotation.

Maybe we could trade any 2 or 3 of: Scal, POB, Pruitt, Walker, Giddions, Leon and the Baby for 1 player. This would open up spots and keep our payroll about the same before bringing someone in. Failing this, perhaps we could just trade Giddions or Walker for a future pick. Even a second might be worth it if Danny and co don't believe in these guys. This is probably the option that I would bet happens.

3. Trade someone in the rotation.

If we could upgrade Tony, Eddie, Powe or Davis by throwing in Walker, Giddions, Pruitt, POB and/or picks, we have to look at that option. I feel that Tony and Powe are both good players in the NBA but both are too short for what we need. If a deal seems even but clears a roster spot or 2, in actuality it is a good deal as we can add other players.

I'd really like to hear some thoughts from the BillfromBoston and Gant's of this board on what they think will happen.
