A Joe Smith buyout is unsure, Trade is d best way 2 get him
ORL, MIA and TOR are lining up for Joe Smith, that's why a buyout is impossible. Because those teams have the assets to land Smith. If he gets a buyout he might go to CLE. So i say the best way to get him is to trade for him to keep him away from CLE(if he ever gets a buyout). I really want to see him in green. I don't want him to land to Eastern Conference playoff teams. I think the Celtics should do all the possible ways to land Smith, because Mutombo as Doc said is unsure, and with PJ retired, Zo-rumors are he'll return to MIA. I think Smith is the best available right now. But, who knows?...

Re: A Joe Smith buyout is unsure, Trade is d best way 2 get him
Here's the problem.
OKC has 16 guys on their roster, they will have to cut someone by Tuesday
to fit recently signed Nenad Krystic within the 15 maximum roster spots.
Now, for Joe Smith, OKC would want picks, cash, or young guards (greatest need).
For the Celtics to match Joe Smith's salary requires
Brian Scalabrine + (Giddens OR Pruitt).
That's a 2 for 1. OKC doesn't have a spot to fit the xtra player,
which means they would have to eat someone's salary unless they dumped someone
to a team with a trade exception or cap space like Memphis.
So, it doesn't look good.

Smith make 4.795 mio
I think Oklahoma would do a trade like expiring+young prospect or a pick for him
That way we have no chance, but lets look what Toronto, Miami or Orlando can ofer:
Toronto:
Parker 4.550 + pick
That looks like their only package, but doubt they would trade parker for him.
Orlando:
Basically no expiring worth mentioning
Boggans 2.900
Foyle 1.200
Miami:
Also Mimi has nothing to offer
Wright 2.750(2years)+Magloire 1.100(exp.)
Basically no of the 3 teams can give Oklahoma a good package.
We have a change only if we send
Scalabrine(3.200 and 3.400) +money that they can cover him last year or buy him out
and
One of the prospects(Pruitt, Giddens, Walker)
Well after this quick look I think we still have a chance.

I looked over the league which teams can offer the best package:
Only 2 can give Oklahoma good packages
Milwaukee:
Jones & pick
Lue+Griffin or Croshere & pick
Denver:
Atkins+Kleiza or Carter/Andersen/Jones & pick
This 2 teams both need big men pf help and have the best package.

I found out also one interesting option
Portland:
Frye+S.Randolpf for Smith
If Portland dont intend to sign Frye, Smith is a great veteran to have of the bench

we have the best young guard to offer in pruitt. OKC doesn't need big men

Maybe of all teams we have the best prospect in Pruitt
...but is Pruitt and lets say 3 mio for scall salary worth Smith...if maybe we could get him if cut
I would much rather give Giddens than Pruitt

Maybe the trade between Boston and Oklahoma could have a few players thrown in.
Glen Davis, Tony Allen and Scalabrine
for
DJ White, Joe Smith and Kyle Weaver

Whoops, my mistake. I mean Boston and Oklahoma. Close though they played in Oklahoma.

orlando's #1 will be a low first, so they can give up Bogans and Foyle and then OKC can cut Foyle... OKC's not going to take Scals...

Joe Smith played us well when he was with Cleveland. I'd hate to see him on their team again. That one little move could effect the outcome drastically.

almost every team can offer a late first which is better then what we do.
i'd offer Scal+cash, POB and Giddens, but they'd have to cut 2 of those so it's unlikely.

For example we trade Scal plus Giddens, Scal will be waived like what Denver did to McDyess. Because Scal has no room with the Thunder.

kemen4:
You don't understand the value of Pruitt.
Point Guards go for $3 million and up on the open market,
Pruitt is making $711k this year and $797k next year.
He's a steal, plus the team that gets him him as a RESTRICTED FREE AGENT NEXT SUMMER.
That's huge, if you want to re-sign him.
Ditto Giddens. There would be no need for any cash, Scal's xtra year cancels the value
that a team would have to pay for Pruitt or Giddens.
You're forgetting that Joe Smith is 35, and will be a free agent this summer.
The idea is to send to a team that he wants to go to,
and where he would re-sign.
The Celtics are a place he would like to go, and re-sign likely.
Danny is holding off hoping that OKC buys Joe Smith out,
saving OKC some bucks,
gaining OKC a roster spot,
and providing OKC additional cap room this summer since they don't take salary back for Smith.

If Pruitt and Giddens are such steals, why don't they get any burn here?

Re: A Joe Smith buyout is unsure, Trade is d best way 2 get him
Here's a variation of the Joe Smith trade that hasn't been proposed before.
It's a 3-Way with Memphis, since Darko Milicic will be out 2 months
with a broken knuckle on his hand.
Trade ID # 4895495
Celtics send Gabe Pruitt to Oklahoma City Thunder, who get a point guard with size, speed, and who can even be paired with Russell Westbrook, who has the size to defend SG's.
Pruitt makes $711K this year, $797K next year, and will then be a Restricted Free Agent.
OKC sends 35 year old Joe Smith to Boston.
Boston sends 6' 9" Brian Scalabrine to Memphis, who gets a player who can execute plays,
is a good guy in the locker room, who can stretch the floor with 3 point shooting ability,
and who has the size to play C and quicks for PF, giving Memphis some flexibility in how
they use Scalabrine in Darko Milicic's two month absence.

Nobody, never mind Memphis, is taking Scal. Why would they do that?

Memphis is a young franchise.
Scal is Free, he costs nothing but a paycheck.
He fills in for Milicic,
is a good locker room guy,
great influence for the Memphis youngins,
stretches the floor,
correctly executes plays,
knocks down 3's,
Chris Wallace is gonna luv Scal.

What nobody has mentioned here is the common practice in the NBA of "filler is bought out."
In other words, the Celtics send Pruitt (or Giddens) and Scalabrine to the Thunder
The Thunder send Smith to Boston
Boston also sends enough cash for the Thunder to buyout Scal.
Scal waits 30 days, returns to Boston
That's how it's done folks...
This leaves two questions:
(1) How much would it cost to buy out (or waive) Scalabrine?
(2) Is it worth it to the Cs?
